Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 6.10.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

* We see Drago WITH WINGS on top of the Temple!

* Vampiro apologizes for his actions and getting into the ring last week.

* El Jefe Dario Cueto is in the ring and announces ULTIMA LUCHA in eight weeks (August 5th). He says it will be a yearly event with the biggest and most amazing matches. The Lucha Underground Title will be fought for in the main event and we start a road to find a challenger tonight. He wants guys that almost tasted gold and lost to Puma to compete for a title shot. Cage, Hernandez and Cuerno are the men. Fenix was sent to an early grave so he will not be included. Cueto then introduced Blue Demon Jr, who appeared in a sweet suit. Cueto said he needed Demon for Ultima Lucha, and then booked him in a match to make sure he’s ready. Chavo (with the remaining Crew members Cisco and Castro flanking him) will be the opponent. He also makes it an anything goes match.

Chavo Guerrero Jr vs. Blue Demon Jr.: Demon fought in his suit, and they brawled from the bell. The Crew got involved to help Chavo beat down Demon, and Chavo used a kendo stick to work him over. The Crew hit a double stomp/DDT combo and then Chavo hit the frog splash with the Crew holding Demon down for the win. El Jefe continues to be an asshole, but is keeping his promise to protect Chavo from “all of Mexico”. This was more of an angle than a match; in place to reintroduce Demon and to further establish Chavo’s relationship with Cueto and the Crew. It was fine, and worked out much better than a straight match would have.

* Drago appears in the Temple somewhere. Some shit is going down.

* Chavo meets with the caged Black Lotus, and says it was just business. Chavo says Mexico won’t have the balls to come after him, and tells Lotus to enjoy her funeral.

* Drago meets with Cueto in the bathroom for the usual meeting. Drago says he lost to Puma, and thusly should be placed in the main event. Cueto says Drago found a loophole and is in the main event. But if he loses, he loses his mask and will be banished forever. Drago agrees. I was wondering how they would bring him back, and the loophole deal at least makes sense because the “good guy” found a mistake in the planning of the “bad guy”.

Bengala, Mascarita Sagrada and Pimpinela Escarlata vs. The Disciples of Death w/Catrina: Pimpinela did the usual comedy spots early, and then Bengala got some time to shine with his high flying. The Disciples of Death wanted no part of this, so they took control and worked as a team to beat down the mismatched babyfaces. The match was ok, disjointed at times and lacked a solid flow and then started to fall apart a bit down the stretch and they started to lose the crowd. The Disciples won with a triple team press into a face first powerbomb. This was really rough and not the debut I think they wanted for The Disciples of Death.

* Mundo met with Cueto, and wanted to know why he wasn’t selected for the #1 contender’s match. Cueto says he expects him to be champion at Ultima Lucha, and wants them to have a new start. He doesn’t care about the past, and respects Mundo. Cueto was impressed with what he did to El Patron, and he realizes that he is the future of the company. Next week, in an all night long iron man match, Mundo vs. Puma for the title. Mundo likes this and they shake hands to a new beginning and a new champion.

#1 Contender’s Match For The Lucha Underground Title: Cage vs. King Cuerno vs. Hernandez vs. Drago: They did some good things here, with Drago playing the underdog along with Cuerno & Cage continuing to tease tension while still working together. Cuerno & Cage did a lot of double teams on Hernandez and Drago to control things early, but they are doing more of a slow burn on these guys going to war, which I appreciate. Killshot was shown on top of the storage room watching the match. Cuerno & Cage did do some spots, but were largely kept apart and still worked together. This was an overall fun, but under whelming match. It lacked the heat that the really good Lucha Underground matches have had. The work was sound, the dives were good (they were the only thing that really got the crowd going) and I loved the Cuerno & Cage subplot; but it lacked something. Drago blew mist into Cuerno’s face and got his wacky dragon tail roll up for the win.

* Post match Puma came into the ring for the big face off.

* Before the show ended, Catrina assaulted El Jefe by choking him out with his key and questioning why Muertes was not involved in the main event. She said he made a mistake, and Cueto said that he didn’t think Muertes was interested in the title, Catrina said that mortal or immortal, every man wants power. Cueto says that in two weeks Muertes will face Drago, and the winner gets the title shot at Ultima Lucha. She then vowed that even Cueto’s monster brother in the cage isn’t a match for Muertes.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

Not a great show in the ring, but a pretty good storytelling show. They reintroduced Demon and Drago, announced the big show and did a lot with Catrina. She’s truly the woman controlling the strings, looking to get her Disciples in range for a trios title shot and also Muertes closer to a title shot against Puma. They also set up the big “all night long” title match for next week between Mundo and Puma. Certainly not a great show, but the moving storyline elements were well done and enjoyable.
