Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 6.24.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

Lucha Underground 6.24.15 – Episode 33: Death vs. The Dragon

OFFICIAL RESULTS
~ Super Fly defeated Sexy Star @ 6:30 via pin [**]
~ Aztec Medallion Match: Aerostar defeated Cage, The Mack and Marty “The Moth” Martinez @ 9:04 via pin [***]
~ #1 Contender’s Match: Mil Muertes defeated Drago @ 9:00 via pin [***]

* Johnny Mundo vs. Alberto El Patron is official for Ultima Lucha on August 5th.

* Vampiro does a sitdown interview with Super Fly. Super Fly said that Sexy Star stole something from him, so he wanted to take something from her in return. Vampiro stated that Sexy won their match fair and square, but Super Fly feels she should have walked away from the match. Super Fly keeps bringing up Vampiro saving Star, and says that tonight he doesn’t care that she’s a woman and will get even.

Sexy Star vs. Super Fly: Sexy Star defeated Super Fly in a mask vs. mask match, which was made by Dario Cueto to make the allies fight amounts themselves. Super Fly then returned during Star’s match with Pentagon and attacked her, leading to her losing that match. Super Fly lacked aggressiveness early for someone so pissed about losing his mask. The match was ok; Star was dodgey selling the knee and some of the exchanges felt very awkward. Super Fly really lacked aggression that he laid out in his promo. He won with a double powerbomb and then continued attacking Star post match. He tried to rip off her mask and then tossed her to the floor.

* Drago prepares for his main event match with Mil Muertes.

* Pentagon cut a pre-match promo noting that he’s not interested n Aztec gold but instead he wants to make an offering to his master. He wants to destroy Vampiro for ruining his last sacrifice and demands he gets into the ring. Pentagon and Vamprio had a stand off, and the crowd loves Vampiro. They teased fighting, and then Pentagon left and apparently won’t be in the match. I am not excited to see Vampiro wrestle at this stage, but the build is being done well.

Aztec Medallion Match: Aerostar vs. Cage vs. The Mack vs. Marty “The Moth” Martinez: Vampiro was silent following the previous angle, looking disappointed in himself for getting involved again and trying to calm himself before apologizing. Mack and Cage paired off to play off of Cage destroying Mack a few weeks back. We got some fun dives, Cage then curled Aerostar several times and then tossed him onto the pile on the floor. Dude is a freak. This was a fun and high-octane multi-man match, making the most of their time and also (and more importantly) playing off past issues with Cage and Mack. I felt that everyone got a chance to shine, and they did a good job of keeping the action going in and out of the ring without any dead time. Cage and Mack took themselves out of the action late as they fought to the floor and Mack hit a frog splash onto Cage. Aerostar then hit a RANA off the ropes and then springboard splash to pin Marty the Moth and win the medallion. Fenix, Jack Evans and now Aerostar have each earned a medallion. That was chaotic, but a lot of fun.

* Ivelisse, Havoc and Angelico worked out backstage and remained gloriously dysfunctional. Catrina arrived and informed the champions that God can’t help them because death will come to all three of them. The creepy Disciples of Death then appeared from the shadows via magical lighting and laid out the champions. Muertes then appeared and walked with Catrina to the ring.

* Hernandez, who is not a fan of Dragons, attacked Drago as he made his entrance and whipped him with his belt. Man he made that trip from Orlando quick. I must say that this was not very sporting of him.

Winner Gets a Title Shot at Ultima Lucha: Drago vs. Mil Muertes w/Catrina: The ref checked on Drago, who said that he was good to go. These men have fought before, with Muertes winning, but both guys have undergone changes since then. Drago tried to use his speed to avoid the bigger man, but Muertes used his power to work over the already weakened Drago. They brawled to the floor late, where Muertes posted Drago and then tossed him into the first few rows of chairs and then beat him with chair shots. Muertes then hit a spear on the floor into the chairs and continued the beating. Muertes also powerbombed Drago onto the commentary table; Drago managed to make a comeback but Muertes was simply too much for him and essentially pummeled him. The flatliner finished it for Muertes. Overall this was a good match and they had a good crowd for this, but the match lacked the overall action and vibe of the really good Lucha Underground matches. Catrina gave Drago the lick of death, and then kissed Catrina. Puma and Konnan came out and they had a long distance staredown to close the show.

* Mil Muertes now faces Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Title at Ultimo Lucha on August 5th.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
An overall good show, where the stories and built to Ultima Lucha took center stage along with some of the lesser characters getting time to shine. What’s weird is that this was the second week without El Jefe Dario Cueto, and I fond myself missing him. The man is excellent at his job. The wrestling was overall good, and they did a lot of storyline advancement. Mundo vs. Patron along with Puma and Muertes are set for Ultima Lucha. They also set the stage for Vampiro vs. Pentagon, Drago vs. Hernandez and the Disciples vs. The Dysfunctional Trios Champions. It’s that aspect where the show really continues to shine.

On a closing note, I feel like it needs to be said that as we get closer to August 5th and with no news of a season two renewal, I am very worried about the future of the promotion.
