Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 7.13.16 – (Season 2, Episode 25) Ultima Lucha Dos (Part II)

OFFICIAL RESULTS
Gift of the Gods Title Elimination Match: Sexy Star won @ 25:51 [***¾]
Death Match: Mil Muertes defeated King Cuerno @ 13:48 via pin [****]

– We get the usual video package to kick off the show.

Gift of the Gods Title Match: Night Claw vs. Daga vs. Killshot vs. Marty the Moth vs. Sexy Star vs. Mariposa vs. Siniestro de la Muerta: This is elimination rules. We got a big brawl to begin, with Star and Mariposa and Killshot and Marty pairing off early. Kobra Moon is at ringside to root on Daga, continuing that angle. Night Claw eliminated Siniestro de la Muerta at 2:30, and we then took a commercial break. The first part was solid, but unspectacular. We returned with Daga hitting a big dive onto Night Claw as Star shoved mariposa to the floor, and then hit a twist dive to the floor onto the pile. Killshot followed with a Sasuke special and then Marty hit a big dive. Daga and Marty went back and forth, with Marty fighting out of an arm bar with a buckle bomb. Night Claw returned, sent Marty to the floor and after some fun back and forth with Daga, hit a SUPER RANA off the top. The Phoenix splash eliminated Daga at 10:45. Night Claw climbed onto the office and hit a moonsault onto the pile below. Killshot and Marty returned to the ring, where Killshot took control and went after Mariposa, hitting a DVD onto the apron. He then hit the cutter on Marty, and went face to face with Night Claw. Nice stuff from them, with Night Claw hitting a RANA off the ropes and superkick for a near fall. he then missed the Phoenix splash and Killshot finished him with the Strom cradle driver at 14:30. Star, Killshot, Marty and Mariposa are left. Killshot and Star worked together, which works well continuing the feuds from earlier in the season. Star with an assisted dive to Marty, and Mariposa got a code red on Killshot for the near fall. Marty and Mariposa double teamed Killshot, and Mariposa hit the Vertebreaker, and they double pinned Killshot at 16:30. We took our second commercial break, and the second portion was night and day as compared to the short beginning that was rather bland. So we’re down to Star vs. Marty and Mariposa; Star’s worst nightmare considering the angle where they kidnapped her at the end of last season. We came back to action, with Star being double-teamed. Star managed to fight them off, sending Mariposa to the floor and almost tapping Marty to an arm bar, but Mariposa made the save. Star’s comeback was a bit lethargic at times; miscommunication between Marty and Mariposa led to Star eliminating Mariposa at 23:00. It came down to Star and Marty, which works as a great arc going back to the end of last year’s Ultima Lucha. The ending stretch lost some of the great energy that the middle portion had, but Star forcing Marty to tap (making sure he got his comeuppance) and also earning a title shot with the victory is a great story. It was very good overall, but did lose steam down the stretch.

– Ryan and Castro are setting up Mr. Cisco with his wire so that he can help them get the dirt on Dario Cueto. They ensure him that he’ll be fine, but Cisco is afraid that Cueto may kill him

Death Match: Mil Muertes w/Catrina vs. King Cuerno: They went to brawling right away, because shit did not get real, it already was before they started. Muertes was using his power game, but Cuerno cut him off, sent him to the floor and hit his crazy suicide dive; this sent Muertes into the chairs. Muertes cut off the second attempt, hitting a TKO onto the floor and then tossing Cuerno around into the chairs and simply beating on him. They brawled into the crowd, with Cuerno sending Muertes back to the floor and then hitting a big high cross. This led to a brawl into the bandstand, where stools and various instruments were used as weapons. Cuerno almost fell off the stand, and then Muertes stomped his foot to make him fall to the floor. Muertes set up a table and then beat on Cuerno with a ladder. He then set up the ladder at an angle against the wall. Cuerno fought back with trashcan shots, but Muertes fought back with rights and tossed Cuerno around the ring. After fighting up top, Cuerno hit a RANA off the ropes and sent Muertes back to the floor. They battled up the steps and tossed each other through windows, and then Cuerno took the tumble down the steps. Cuerno kept fighting, hitting a tornado DDT after running off the wall, and then he set up a table. Cuerno ended up sending Muertes into the ladder, and then grabbed another table. Cuerno then made the mistake of grabbing Catrina, and got speared through a table. Muertes then snapped, and powerbombed Cuerno through a table, through another, through a third and then rolled him back into the ring and ended his existence by hitting Cuerno with a crowbar shot off the ropes and a tombstone. Murder, death, kill. This was an overall excellent main event, with Cuerno getting enough to make you think that he could win, but also showing again the strong connection between Catrina and Muertes, which drives the monster. It may not have been on the same level as the Muertes vs. Fenix matches, but it was very good.

– As we get a video package for Pentagon vs. Matanza, they show footage of Vampiro vs. Pentagon, and the reveal that Vampiro was his master. Vampiro was stoic, and then dumped out his medication and claimed he had to prepare his student for the challenge next week. I am glad to see we finally got back to that.

– We then go to Dario Cueto’s office, where Mr. Cisco has arrived for some totally normal, and not wired up conversation. Unfortunately for Cisco, Dario knew the deal, and found the wire! He dared the police to come and get him, and then used the red bull statue (which was used to kill his mother) and PUMMELED HIM TO DEAD WITH IT as the police listened. The show closed with Dario on the RED ROTARY PHONE, telling someone, “it’s time…”

– Still to come next week…
* Black Lotus vs. Dragon Azteca Jr.
* Taya vs. Ivelisse
* Prince Puma vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.
* Trios Title Match: Champions Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and PJ Black vs. Drago, Fenix and Aerostar
* Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion The Monster Matanza Cueto vs. Pentagon Jr

As long as there are no complications next week, I will be doing live coverage of the Ultima Lucha Dos (Part III) finale.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Very Good
The 411
This week’s effort was an overall very good show, and a nice step up from last week’s introductory to Ultima Lucha Dos. The matches were more important, felt more important, and they did some very good things as far as linking the stories (Marty and Star, Vampiro and Pentagon) together as we head into the big two-hour finale. The top three matches are very strong, and I am really looking forward to the show.
