– We see Black Lotus training in her cage as Dario Cueto offers her some champagne. Good to know she’s alive because we haven’t seen her from weeks. He hoped she had a change of heart, and then explained that his father made a lot of money off of underground fights with Matanza. Cueto then tried to tell Lotus that Dragon Azteca was the one that killed her parents, and not Matanza. He said that the truth hurts, but that it will also set you free. Lotus then went back to punching the chalk outline on her wall, because she’s a bad ass.

Falls Count Anywhere Match: The Mack vs. Cage: These two have had issues for weeks, starting in a match and then escalating when Cage destroyed Mack in a locker room brawl. Mack became only the second man to pin Cage, and when he did it again with a flash roll up, Cueto made this “Falls Count Anywhere Match” to settle the score. Cage attacked during Mack’s entrance and got this off to the right start, because they hate each other. They played up the stipulation well, breaking a door, brawling on the floor, using 2×4’s, a stop sign, a glass bottle was used and then Mack even hit Cage with a cooler of beer. This led to Mack drinking beers and hitting a stunner on the floor for a near fall. The crowd loved that. They did a big Liger bomb spot from the ropes, through a table, onto the floor for a crazy near fall. They brawled onto the top of Cueto’s office, and after a big suplex, Cage finished Mack off with a curb stomp through a cinderblock. The ring was just there, as they only used it for one spot and really played into stipulation, which should differentiate it from all of the other matches. This was exactly what it needed to be, they had a super hot crowd, worked at a good pace, it was fun and a great way to end a feud and a great way to kick off the show. It set up a great atmosphere for the night.

– Scheduled for next week’s two hour Ultima Lucha Finale…

* Blue Demon Jr vs. Texano
* Pentagon Jr. vs. Vampiro
* Alberto El Patron vs. Johnny Mundo
* Gift of the Gods Match: Big Ryck vs. Aerostar vs. Bengala vs. King Cuerno vs. Sexy Star vs. Jack Evans vs. Fenix
* Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion Prince Puma vs. Mil Muertes

Lucha Underground Trios Title Match: Champions Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico vs. The Disciples of Death (Barrio Negro, El Siniestro de la Muerte and Terce) w/Catrina: The champions have been gloriously dysfunctional, but when they need to work together, they have been able to survive. Once Catrina returned with Muertes (after his resurrection) she turned her attention to the trios titles. At first glance I was not a fan of this not being the main event for night one, but i get why they did it. The Disciples attacked at the bell, and quickly dispatched Ivelisse and took control of the match. Ivelisse would get involved when she could, and Havoc and Angelico fought hard, hitting dives and doing anything that they could to stay in the match. The story was that Ivelisse, who was still injured, was the weak link and the numbers game was too much for the champions.

Yeah, that’s Angelico doing another insane dive, which is now his thing. Ivelisse and Catrina brawled late, with Catrina getting the better of thing and knocking out Ivelisse with the stone of death, and that was all they needed to crowd new champions. Catrina gave Ivelisse the lick of death post match. They did what they could, and told the story they needed too but the injury to Ivelisse obviously held back the match. The title change works for me as Catrina is looking to build her empire, Ivelisse is hurt so the loss doesn’t make them look bad, and this leaves the door open for the former champions to challenge in season two (if we get one). It was fun for what it was, and they did the best they could all things considered, but overall as a match it was rather average.

* Striker and Vampiro drink beers, PRODUCT PLACEMENT!

Believer’s Backlash Match: Drago vs. Hernandez: After being banished, Drago was able to make his way back into the promotion via a loophole. He and Hernandez had issues right away, and Hernandez attacked him and beat him down with a strap because not only does he hate Drago, but also thinks dragons do not exist. The “believers” that have the straps actually got an entrance, what the hell? They are some podcast geeks or something, Striker tried to tell us who they were but did a poor job of it. The story was obvious, when Drago was sent to the floor the fans would not attack him. When Hernandez went to the floor, they would beat him. Striker spent too much time discussing one of the believers (Hot Tub Guy) instead of calling the match. I don’t care about the plant fans. Hernandez would take back control but he the failed to connect with the top rope splash as Drago got the knees up. From there they went back and forth, and Hernandez hit a border toss on Drago over the ropes and onto the believers on the floor. Hernandez went for the SuperMex dive, but Drago would use the mist to stop that. Hernandez tried to hide under the ring but got whipped by the believers. Drago then introduced nunchucks, worked over Hernandez with them and then hit a big splash off of the top, through a table. Drago then picked up the win with the splash from the top in the ring. It felt rough going early as they worked to find their flow, but they had a great crowd and in the end, delivered a good and fun match. But I did feel that it under delivered as a main event.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
Overall a good hour to kick off UltimaLucha. The opening match was really good, the title match was a good story and made sense but they were hindered by Ivelisse’s injury. The thing I did like was that it set the stage for Catrina and her men gaining ultimate power if Mil Muertes wins next week. The main event was good, and had a hot crowd, but overall I felt it under delivered in the main event spot. This felt like a good appetizer for next week’s two-hour special.
