Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 9.24.16

Lucha Underground 9.28.16 (Season Three, Episode 4)

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Prince Puma defeated Siniestro de la Muerta @ 4:50 via pin [**½]
– Pentagon Dark defeated Cortez Castro @ 1:11 via pin [NR]
– Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, PJ Black and Taya defeated Fenix, Drago, Aerostar and Sexy Star @ 8:52 via pin [***½]
– Dragon Azteca Jr. defeated Chavo Guerrero Jr. @ 7:05 via pin []

– We get the usual slick opening video package.

– Dario meets with Sexy Star backstage as she cuddles with her Gift of the Gods Title. Dario says that she can defend her title and possible lose it or face Matanza and get destroyed. Dario then announces Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, PJ Black and Taya vs. Fenix, Drago, Aerostar and Sexy. Dario leaves and Johnny Mundo arrives and introduces himself to Sexy Star. It’s season three dude. He then tells her that he’s the next Gift of the Gods champion. There was some sexual tension there, and there was an unintentional ab off. Also, Sexy Star has a hell of a handshake.

Prince Puma vs. Siniestro de la Muerta: Puma is feuding with Mil Muertes, and wanted to fight Siniestro, due to his past association with Catrina and Muertes. They brawled right away, which led to some back and forth and a dropkick by Puma. Puma worked some uppercuts and chops, and followed those with kicks. Puma was working with a more deliberate and serious tone to his work, Siniestro tried to take control but was cut off and Puma hit the dead lift suplex for the near fall. Siniestro managed to fire back with a series of kicks; Puma hit the spin kick to stop that. Puma headed up top and then Muertes arrived. Puma avoided him and sent him to the floor. Puma hit a spinning Michinoku driver and stared down Muertes. Puma then hit Muertes’ flatliner finish and scored the win. This was a perfectly solid match, with the emphasis being on Puma’s more serious tone to add to the feud with Muertes. In that aspect, it was very good in showing the change in attitude.

– Post match Puma hit a suicide dive and then he and Muertes had a short, but fun brawl as Catrina pulled Muertes away from the fight.

– Cortez Castro comes to Dario’s office for a meeting. They share an awkward hug, and Dario says he is sorry that they lost Cisco, and Dario say she will do whatever he can to bring the real killer to justice. Dario is still happy to have Castro, and says the show must go on. He has a match tonight, and Dario tells him to win it for Mr. Cisco. RUN CORTES. HE KNOWS!

Cortez Castro vs. Pentagon Dark: I TOLD YOU TO RUN! Castro attacked early, working over Pentagon in the corner for a bit. Pentagon put a stop to, and worked some vicious leg kicks and chops. The package piledriver finished Castro. This wasn’t much of a match, but they accomplished a lot. Dario sent the cop to get punished, because we’ve seen that he knows Castro is a cop. Pentagon gets to destroy someone and then also keeps staring Vampiro down, keeping their tension going from the end of season two.

– Pentagon says whoever wins the main event tonight; he doesn’t care, because in this ring he doesn’t even respect him mother. Cero Miedo bitches.

Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, PJ Black and Taya vs. Fenix, Drago, Aerostar and Sexy Star: The last time that they ran an atomicos match, Mundo pinned star. Star and Taya kicked things off, they worked a solid back and forth with Star hitting a RANA and Taya ran for the tag. Jack Evans tagged in, did 30-seconds of random flips and shit as Drago watched, and then he tagged out to Black.

The trios champions then worked quick tags, working over Black until he managed to stun Aerostar, allowing Mundo to tag in. He and Aerostar had a really fun back and forth, leading to Fenix tagging in and lighting up Mundo with kicks. These two are working very great together. Fenix and Star double teamed Mundo, but she got cut off in the heels corner, Evans tagged in, he did his ass attack in the corner and then Taya tagged in and worked over Star, hitting the double knee strike in the corner. Quick tags by he heels now, and they controlled until Mundo accidentally hit Taya. Drago got the hot tag, and then the trios champions ran wild and Fenix got a near fall off of the 450, it broke down into dives and the signature move buffet. Mundo ate the superkick from Fenix and then Fenix with the corkscrew dive. Taya and Star were left in the ring, Star sent her to the floor (where she stayed holding her leg) and then Star and Evans went back and forth until Mundo hit her with a superkick and Evans got the roll up for the win. That was a very good and more importantly fun match. The booking in the previous weeks made sense to get us here, and it had the right amount of chaos down the stretch, creating a great energy with the crowd. The win keeps Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and PJ Black in the hunt as a trios team, and possibly gets Evans a shot at the Gift of the Gods title.

– Mil Muertes meditates and Catrina then says Siniestro de la Muerta failed for he last time and she breaks his next and SUCKS OUT HIS SOUL and gives it to Mil! She tells him to do the same to Puma.

Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.: The winner gets to face Pentagon Dark, who just happens to be the guy that broke both of their arms. Rey Mysterio Jr. is the special guest referee. Rey has a history with Chavo as enemies, and Rey is also basically the mentor to Azteca, as well as he former partner when they were part of the trios champions. Rey doesn’t feel that Azteca is ready to face Pentagon, so we have a lot of layers here. They worked some basic back and froth to begin, Chavo had control until Azteca hit a lucha arm drag. Azteca then grounded Chavo, trying to work the arm but Chavo escaped. That led to a crucifix by Chavo for 2. Azteca then sent Chavo to the floor, went for a plancha but was caught and slammed to the barricade. The slingshot senton got 2 for Chavo. Chavo slowly worked over Azteca in the corner, Azteca picked up the pace and got a snazzy lucha arm drag but then ate a lariat; the cover got 2. Azteca again tried to fight back, but Chavo got the single leg crab. Azteca made the ropes and Chavo tried to say Azteca tapped. Chavo and Rey argued, and then Chavo attacked Rey. Rey refused to DQ him and then punched Chavo Azteca hit the RANA into the pin to win. That was a boring and completely uninspired match, with Chavo taking almost the whole thing and creating an atmosphere that made me want to take a nap. Then we got the bullshit with he and Rey and Azteca picked up the “lucky” win, which does him no real good making him appear as a threat to Pentagon.

– Chavo tried to attack Rey, but ended up taking the 619 as Rey stood tall with Dragon Azteca Jr.

– We see Black Lotus lighting candles, and saying that she will get revenge. She is sending the Black Lotus triad to take out Pentagon Dark. SHE HAS NINJAS.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

Overall this was a little better than last week, but the only things really worth watching were the atomicos match, the end of the Puma match and Catrina murdering a man and sucking out his soul. This wasn’t bad, but it was far from must see.
