Csonka’s NJPW Road to Invasion Attack Review 3.29.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

* It’s night of tag team matches to build to Invasion Attack. Have I watched too much wrestling? Likely so. Why am I doing this? Because no one else will, that’s why.

* This is a one-camera shoot.

The Young Bucks defeated Sho Tanaka and Tiger Mask : This was a good opener, a very good way to kick off the show. Sho Tanaka worked a lot of the match, and continues to impress overall. The Young Bucks, really good pro wrestlers if you didn’t know. Tanaka worked hard, but ate the Indy-Taker and was pinned. Go home young boy, the Bucks have shirts to sell. The champions retain as they head into their Invasion Attack match with Roppongi Vice (Baretta and Rocky Romero).

Captain New Japan and Mascara Dorada defeated Cody Hall and Kenny Omega : Cody Hall is doing even more of his dad’s gimmick now as he has the toothpick. I loathe this. The kid is going to have a hard enough time getting over, don’t lock him down even further to his dad’s legacy. Dorada and Omega got in some time to work, and did some fun stuff to tease their Invasion Attack match for Omega’s title. Cody Hall continues to grow as a performer, the kid is obviously rough in parts, but he’s slowly getting it I think. Captain New Japan scored the roll up for the win. The crowd loved that, Hall should be taking pins right now and the good Captain needs a win here and there so this was all good.

Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi and Ryuskue Taguchi defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima and Yohei Komatsu: This was the best match on the show. I have really been enjoying Komatsu’s work as of late; he’s really growing on me as a performer and continues to improve. There were some great near falls on Komatsu, and the crowd was really buying into him, which was cool to see. This had good action, never really slowed and everyone got some stuff in and it worked.

Hirooki Goto, Katsuyori Shibata, and Tomoaki Honma defeated Karl Anderson, Tama Tonga and Doc Gallows : This had a slow first half, which wasn’t bad but it was just there. The people love Honma of course, and they got the heat on him forever until he got the hot tag. The good guys cleaned house, and Shibata scored the win with the penalty kick on Tonga. This was fine, and was set up for the Cody Hall, Tama Tonga and Yujiro Takahashi vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima and Tomoaki Honma match at Invasion attack.

Roppongi Vice (Beretta and Rocky Romero), Toru Yano, Tomohiro Ishii and Shinsuke Nakamura defeated Timesplitters, Tetsuya Naito, Togi Makabe, Hiroshi Tanahashi: This was the usual multi-man tag involving big stars on a “Road to” show. This served two purposes, one to get some heat on Ishii and Makabe for their tag match at Invasion Attack, and to get Roppongi Vice rolling with a win. Nakamura and Tanahashi basically had the night off here, which was fine because it allowed other to shine but also they add the star power to the match. This served its purpose and was a fun match, no complaints.

AJ Styles, Bad Luck Fale and Yujiro Takahashi defeated Kazuchika Okada, Gedo and Yoshi-Hashi: The goal here was to comminute to build Okada vs. Fale, while also giving AJ Styles another featured win as they actually have him on the tour this time, which is an advantage. This was another fun multi-man match, which in a night of all tag matches is appreciated since they can start to run together. Styles won the match after pinning Gedo; their work together was actually fun and they should have considered a singles match on one of these smaller shows.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

Overall a good show, with quality wrestling and build to the more important event, Invasion Attack. While there was nothing amazing here wrestling wise, this show was exactly what it was supposed to be. Not a bad match on the card, if you have the extra time and try to regularly follow New Japan, it’s worth the watch as the show really flies by.
