– Similar to the G1 and the Super Juniors tournament, this is streamlined coverage of just the tournament matches. A lot of the tournament will now be recorded and released on VOD as we go forward.
Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma defeated Bad Luck Fale & Tama Tonga: They basically worked the exact match that you though they would . After some run, Bullet Club got the heat on Honma with Fale doing the heavy work of trying to destroy our hero, the crowd willed him to survive and get the hot tag to Makabe. Makabe ran wild, he and Fale trying to destroy each other was fun, and then Fale took a powder. Tonga ate the doomsday kokeshi and King Kong knee drop and that was that. This was a rock solid tag match, nothing you need to see, but a solid way to kick off this round of tournament matches.
Shinsuke Nakamura & Tomohiro Ishii defeated Matt Taven & Michael Bennett: This was another rock solid match, they did a lot of back and forth here, and the Kingdom actually tried to mix things up and did some fun stuff, even busting out some Hardy Boy spots. It was odd as hell watching the Kingdom getting the heat on Ishii, but it led to a solid hot tag from Nakamura. The stuff with Maria was at a minimum, and she didn’t factor into the finish, which I appreciated. The closing stretch had some fun moments, Ishii isolated Bennett and Taven ate the Boma ye and that was that. Shinsuke Nakamura & Tomohiro Ishii get on the board, while The Kingdom are here to fill space and because the Japanese like Maria a lot.
Hiroshi Tanahashi & Michael Elgin defeated Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi: This was another rock solid match, Elgin and Tanahashi worked their asses off to make the match worth something, but it was slow at times and just never could get to that next level; this was forgettable They thought that Elgin and Nakanishi doing power spots was a good idea, so planet Nakanishi stood there while Elgin collided with him several times like fragments of an asteroid. Tanahashi was in night off mode, while Elgin worked hard and got some good reactions overall. Elgin in New Japan comes off so much better for me than in ROH. Elgin eventually hit the powerslam on Nakanishi, and then the high fly flow finished him off. The match went too long and is nothing you need to waste your time watching.
– There was nothing bad, but this was a pretty lifeless show.
