Csonka’s NXT Review 2.01.17

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Ember Moon defeated Aliyah @ 3:25 via pin [**¼]
Non-Title Match: WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate defeated Oney Lorcan @ 5:15 via pin [**¾]
– No Way Jose defeated Elias Samson @ 6:50 via pin [**]

With Lucha Underground on hiatus, I will be trying to fit NXT into the schedule.

– We get highlights from NXT Takeover: San Antonio, which I felt over delivered and was an excellent show.

Ember Moon vs. Aliyah: Aliyah used her speed early, taking Moon down and scoring a few pin attempts. Moon cut her off, worked an abdominal stretch with a neck crank. Aliyah escaped and hit a neck breaker. She fired away with uppercuts, the corner boot followed and the northern lights got 2. Moon had enough of that shit, hitting a moonsault press for 2. Aliyah fought back with the head scissors, got a sunset flip but then ate a sliding clothesline. Eclipse by Moon and that is all. Ember Moon defeated Aliyah @ 3:25 via pin [**¼] That was a rock solid, back and forth match; Aliyah looked competitive and had a good outing. Moon won to keep her momentum as she continues to work towards a title shot.

– We get highlights from Young vs. Dillinger from NXT Takeover: San Antonio. We also saw clips of Dillinger’s Rumble debut. That was such a cool moment for a guy that washed out of developmental twice and has busted his ass in his latest chance.

– Next were highlights from the NXT Women’s title match from NXT Takeover: San Antonio. Including Asuka commenting on her win, and “not knowing” who Ember Moon was when asked about her. “Ember who? She work here? Ok.”

– Ember Moon is interviewed. She wants to be the one that dethrones the empress, and once their battle is over, Asuka will know who she is.

WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate vs. Oney Lorcan: They locked up to begin with Lorcan looking to overpower the champion. They worked to a stalemate, but Bate lit him up with a left. The dropkick followed, Bate looked for the Tyler driver, but Lorcan hits a dragon screw leg whip to the corner, ground and pound followed. Chops by Lorcan in the corner, the uppercuts followed and bate then countered with a back slide. Bate hits a knee strike and then an uppercut from the second rope. Lorcan fired back, but Bate hit an airplane spin. Lorcan survived that, took Bate down but Bate fired back with the rolling kick. Tyler Driver 97 connects and good night Mr. Lorcan. WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate defeated Oney Lorcan @ 5:15 via pin [**¾] That was a short, but pretty good match to get Bate in front of the NXT crowd and to give him a win. Lorcan was a good guy to pair Bate with here; he always works hard and makes his opponents look good. The match had good action and a nice pace overall, it just needed some more time and intensity. I hope Lorcan gets more chances, because he has a lot to offer.

– We get highlights of Roderick Strong’s post Takeover promo. His win was a statement and he is looking to win the NXT Title.

– Next were highlights from the NXT tag team title match from NXT Takeover: San Antonio, where the Authors of Pain won the titles. We then got clips of their reaction to winning the titles.

– Next up were clips of Bobby Roode’s glorious NXT Title win over Shinsuke Nakamura. We then saw footage of Namakura being helped backstage (with a Kassius Ohno cameo, consoling Nakamura). We also saw comments from Roode, he demanded respect from the random interview chick, and said he made NXT his and that his era has started. It will be glorious.

– This is Corey Graves’ final episode working NXT; he gets a video package on his time in developmental, discussing his concussion issues and transition to an announcer. It was a great video package, and also a bit heartbreaking.

– Graves then spent some of his final moments as only he could, burying The Drifter. Jose’s music interrupted the Drifter, to the delight of Graves.

No Way Jose vs. Elias Samson: Samson attacked at the bell with the shotgun dropkick. Jose quickly fired back with a clothesline. Samson grabbed the hair, slamming Jose to the mat. Jose hit a Finlay roll, danced, and then Samson rolled to the floor. Baseball slide dropkick by Jose and a slingshot plancha followed. Post break, Jose headed up top but Samson cut him off by crotching him. he then beat him down in the corner. Samson then slammed Jose off the apron and followed with a knee strike. Samson maintained the heat, beating down Jose and yelling at the crowd. Jose was able to slam him to the corner, and fired up with punches and clotheslines. Wind up punch by Jose countered, but he then hits the pop up punch for the win. No Way Jose defeated Elias Samson @ 6:50 via pin [**] Unfortunately the best part of the match was Graves burying The Drifter; the match was largely bland, especially with the Drifter in control. It was not bad, but it simply existed.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

Like a lot of post Takeover NXT shows, it was ok, but far from must see. It served as a fine show to keep you up to date after the events of Takeover, and Moon getting another win was nice to see as she looks to challenge Asuka. It was a fine show.
