Csonka’s NXT Review 5.10.17

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Aleister Black defeated Cezar Bononi @ 1:30 via pin [NR]
– DIY defeated Riddick Moss and Tino Sabbatelli @ 5:05 via pin [**]
#1 Contender’s Match: Hideo Itami defeated Roderick Strong @ 18:05 via pin []

With Lucha Underground on hiatus, I will be trying to fit NXT into the weekly schedule, and hopefully going forward..

Aleister Black vs. Cezar Bononi: Bononi talks some trash, looks to throw kick but Black lights him up and sends him to the floor. Back in, and Bononi actually gets in some offense, hitting an atomic drop and dropkick. Black then avoids strikes and hits a jumping knee strike. Black Mass connects and Bononi in done; he was 30 years old. Aleister Black defeated Cesar Bononi @ 1:30 via pin [NR] Line them up and Black knocks them out. Black’s squashes are really fun, and he comes across as a complete bad ass.

– We get highlights from last week’s women’s battle royal, which ended early as Asuka arrived and tried to kill Ember Moon; the attack led to Regal announcing Cross, Moon & Riot vs. Asuka at Takeover. But Moon is out with an injury, so it is Asuka vs. Cross & Riot. We get an update on Moon, who is out for 4 to 5 weeks. She’s upset about being out, but promises to be better than ever when she returns.

– They announce that Pete Dunne will challenge UK Champion Tyler Bate at Takeover for the title; we then get a Pete Dunne video package.

– We see Roderick Strong prepping backstage for tonight’s main event.

– We get a Ruby Riot video package. She talks about her tattoos, and we see her getting a new one. She’s sacrificed a lot to get here, and the NXT Women’s title will be her validation.

– We get an interview with Nikki Cross. Cross scares the production guy, and messes with the equipment; she then refuses to answer the questions, instead asking where Ruby, Asuka and her championship are. She will take the title at Takeover, and take everything from Asuka.

– We see Hideo Itami prepping backstage for tonight’s main event.

– Drew McIntyre puts over tonight’s main event, and is disappointed he’s not part of the match. He promises to make things happen for himself. Wesley Blake arrives and says he deserves the chance, noting McIntyre should leave again.

– We get a Patrick Clark video package.

– DIY are in the ring. Gargano says the Authors of Pain have what they want. Ciampa wants their one on one rematch, and challenges them for a title match at Takeover. Riddick Moss and Tino Sabbatelli then arrive, claiming that this is all about them and the line starts with them and not DIY. Ciampa says that they crossed the line and attack, clearing them to the floor. We get a match…

DIY vs. Riddick Moss and Tino Sabbatelli: Moss & Ciampa start things off, with Moss using his power advantage early. He beats down Ciampa, tags in Sabbatelli and they work quick tags, isolating Ciampa in their corner. Good aggression from Sabbatelli and Moss early on, with solid teamwork, scoring near falls on Ciampa. Sabbatelli then grounded Ciampa; he fights for the tag and hits a suplex. Gargano gets the hot tag, he runs wild on Moss, superkicks Sabbatelli and hits the spear on Moss for 2 as Sabbatelli makes the save. Gargano tosses Sabbatelli to the floor, Gargano hits a suicide dive onto Moss as Ciampa hits Sabbatelli with the knee strike off the apron. Back in and the superkick/knee strike combo finish Moss. DIY defeated Riddick Moss and Tino Sabbatelli @ 5:05 via pin [**] Good showing by Moss & Sabbatelli, they have a great look and showed some promise before falling to DIY. This was a rock solid match for the time given.

– Regal is out and books DIY vs. the AOP rematch; Ellering & The AOP arrive, and promises that his team will end DIY’s careers. Ellering says DIY’s blood will be on his hands. Regal then announces that the Takeover match will be a Ladder Match.

– Kassius Ohno is interviewed, commenting on his failed bid to win the NXT Title. Ohno says he plans to get back up and work his way back like he has over the last three years. He puts over Black and McIntyre, and Almas arrives and says Ohno ruined his opportunity. Ohno says Almas is too concerned with what happens after his matches, and challenges Almas for a match next week.

– We get a Tyler Bate video package.

– Strong is interviewed prior to the main event; this is why he is here and what he is here to do. Itami then says he respects Strong, but he will go to sleep.

Hideo Itami vs. Roderick Strong: they grappled early, working to a stalemate. It’s even early as neither man can get an advantage. Itami then works a side headlock, picks up the pace with both men teasing kicks, Strong then avoiding the GTS and rolling to the floor. Post break, Itami lays in strikes in the corner; Strong to the apron but Itami catches him with knee strikes. Itami keeps control, hitting the back elbow and then laying in body shots in the corner. Strong counters a suplex, draping Itami over the ropes and then lays the boots to him. The chops from Strong follow, and then a side back breaker gets 2. Strong then grounds Itami, working over the previously injured shoulder of Itami. Strong then hits the pump handle back breaker, and again grounds Itami by working the shoulder. Itami escapes, but runs into a boot, allowing Strong to cover for 2. Itami tries to fire up with strikes, but runs into a dropkick and Strong covers for 2. He then works a body scissors, and again attacks the shoulder of Itami. Itami battles back, sends Strong to the floor but Strong just tosses Itami onto the apron back first to maintain control. Post break, Strong again has Itami grounded. Itami escapes, fires back with kicks and strikes and then hits the boot to a running Strong. Itami up top, hits a clothesline and covers for 2. They trade strikes and kicks, but Strong hits the Angle slam for a near fall. Itami again lays in strikes, but Strong catches him and hits the back breaker for another near fall. Strong sets Itami up top, he follows him up and they battle for position. Itami hits the super falcon arrow (HE DID THE DEAL) for the near fall. They again trade strikes center ring, Strong then crushes Itami with a knee strike, but Itami kicks out at 2. Itami then hits a running kick to cut off Strong, Strong fights off the GTS but eats a kick and the corner dropkick. Itami then drops the kneepad, Strong tries to pull himself up and Itami hits the GTS and covers for the win. Hideo Itami defeated Roderick Strong @ 18:05 via pin [***½] This was an overall very good main event, but didn’t quite get to great. I felt that the closing stretch lacked the real drama and near falls that made you question who would win, and the finish came off flat. I honestly felt Strong looked the better of the two and following those videos, would have made for a great story to challenge Roode, but they’re playing the long game with him and likely feel that they have to give Itami the shot before he gets hurt again.

– Post match they shook hands and hugged.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

NXT was an overall good show this week, locking things in for Takeover, officially announcing the UK Title match and setting Itami as Roode’s challenger. This was an effective hour of TV.
