Csonka’s ROH TV Review 10.06.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
Non-Title Match: Kyle O’Reilly defeated NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata @ 17:30 via submission [***½]
ROH Title Match: Champion Adam Cole defeated Tetsuya Naito, Jay Lethal and Hiroshi Tanahashi @ 18:30 via pin [**½]

Matches for this week and next week were taped at the August Field of Honor event.

– Bobby Fish is on commentary with Nigel and Corino.

Non-Title Match: NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata vs. Kyle O’Reilly: They did a lot of grappling exchanges, both on the ground and on the feet. Both guys got a bit fired up and then they started to throw some strikes, and then work to the ground where both men failed to connect with kicks after failed submission attempts. Shibata worked a head scissors, O’Reilly eventually escaped and we worked through a commercial break. Post break, Shibata started to target the arm and grounded O’Reilly. Nice grappling here and Fish was actually adding a lot on commentary, due to the fact that he teams with O’Reilly, has faced Shibata and also works the style. They did the man up spot and started to beat the shit out of each other center ring, with O’Reilly finally getting some momentum and attacked the knee. O’Reilly kicked Shibata in the face and Shibata brushed it off and dared O’Reilly to throw more kicks, which he did. Shibata fired back with a series of kicks and forearms, and scored a near fall off the suplex and then went for an arm bar. O’Reilly made the ropes, but Shibata continued to attack the arm. They worked through another break, and when we came back, O’Reilly was fighting off a hanging arm bar. O’Reilly worked into a head and arm choke to escape and then they traded forearm strikes. O’Reilly was putting together a run until Shibata hit the STO. Knee strikes followed from both men, O’Reilly started to attack the knee again and Shibata dropped to the mat. Shibata got the desperation sleeper, O’Reilly made the ropes and then got dumped on his head with a suplex and they then traded suplexes and that led to the double down. As they fought to their fee they traded shrikes, O’Reilly hit the brainbuster and Shibata kicked out. O’Reilly then hit the PK and a brainbuster for 2, and transitioned into he arm bar and then the omoplata. Shibata battled, and the ref then called for the bell. Kyle O’Reilly defeated NEVER Openweight Champion Katsuyori Shibata @ 17:30 via submission [***½] That was a very good match overall, with slick and smooth grappling and the hard hitting style you expect. It never got as good as the recent KOPW match, but it was very enjoyable.

ROH Title Match: Champion Adam Cole vs. Tetsuya Naito vs. Jay Lethal vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi: We got a lot of stalling early, as they all tried to tag in and we eventually got to Cole and Naito. After messing around a bit, they finally got to action. We got a lot of back and forth; solid pacing here as both guys would take turns mocking each other. Naito tagged in Lethal, and bailed to the floor. Cole tagged in Tanahashi, and we got a battle of the faces, with some air guitaring from Tanahashi. Lethal knocked Cole to the floor and then Naito. After dropkicking Tanahashi to the floor, Lethal hit suicide dives to all three. After the break, Lethal worked the figure four on Tanahashi, but Cole broke it up. Cole tagged in and worked over Tanahashi. Cole mocked Tanahashi a bit, leading to Tanahashi battling back and then Naito tagged in. They did some back and forth, Cole hit the ushigoroshi and got a near fall. Lethal tagged himself in and Naito sent he and Cole to the floor, teased a dive and traquilo. Naito then hit the corner dropkick combo on Lethal, tagged Cole in and he continued the heat on Lethal. Lethal got his hope spots as this dragged on. There is no energy here, just four guys living off of trademark poses and some spots thrown in. Cole and Naito have never been blander. Lethal finally superkicked Cole and hit the lethal combo on Naito and they worked through another break. Post break Tanahashi tagged in and walked mildly, hitting the senton to both Naito and Cole. He went up top and Naito crotched him and tagged in. Gloria to Cole connected and that got 2. Lethal tagged himself in went back and froth with Cole, and then hit the lethal injection for 2 as Tanahashi and Naito made the save. It broke down into the signature move buffet and everyone was down. Naito and Lethal battled up top, Cole tossed Tanahashi and took out Naito. He and Lethal up top now, Lethal sent him to the mat and hit the top rope elbow, and then Tanahashi missed the high fly flow, Lethal injection to Tanahashi, Naito in and hit Lethal with the belt as Cole distracted the ref. Cole superkicked Naito and then hit last shot on Lethal to retain. Champion Adam Cole defeated Tetsuya Naito, Jay Lethal and Hiroshi Tanahashi @ 18:30 via pin [**½] This as painfully average and uninspired, especially considering the level of talent in the ring. It was 95% going through the motions.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

This was an overall good, but skippable show, If short on time, catch O’Reilly vs. Shibata.
