Csonka’s ROH TV Review 10.20.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– War Machine defeated Shane Taylor & Keith Lee @ 12:30 via pin [***½]
ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship Tournament First Round Match: The Cabinet defeated Leon St. Giovanni, Jason Kincaid & Shaheem Ali @ 9:00 via pin [**¾]
– Jay Lethal defeated Silas Young @ 10:52 via pin [**¾]

Bullet Club Talking Time: Adam Cole (BAY BAY), Adam Page and The Young Bucks made their way out to kick off the show. Matt Jackson put over Ladder War and their title win, noting that they turned All Star Extravaganza into FIVE STAR Extravaganza. Cole then said they promised to make a stamen at the PPV, he retained his title, Page demolished O’Reilly and the Bucks won their titles back to prove their greatness. They will continue to control ROH, and he promises that some form of Bullet Club will with the six-man titles and that Page will win the TV Title to give them full control. This was a basic heel boasting promo, it was fine but really wasn’t “needed.”

War Machine vs. Shane Taylor & Keith Lee: These two have been feuding for a while and it has been a glorious HOSS WAR. War Machine hit stereo suicide dives as Lee and Taylor made their entrance, which led to a brawl on the floor. War Machine ran wild early until Rowe got sent to the barricade and Taylor and Lee worked over Hanson. Really good intensity here, Hanson got tossed to the floor onto the pile and then Taylor hit a cannonball off the apron as we went to the break. Back in the ring all four were brawling, Taylor and Lee looked to have control but Rowe hit a delayed XPLODER on Taylor. These dudes are just tossing each other around, Taylor took out Rowe but Hanson went up top and got cut off and ate the double chokeslam for 2. Hanson got busted open somewhere in the fray. Taylor and Lee looked for more double teams, but Rowe made the save and Taylor got sent to the floor. Hanson hit a powerslam, and scored two. Taylor and Lee again battled back, working over Hanson. Lee hit a powerslam and got 2. Hanson was able to fight back and tag in Rowe, who ran wild with superman punches and a dropkick. They hit fallout on Taylor, but he kicked out! Hanson got sent to the floor, Taylor and Lee hit the double team powerbomb, but Rowe survived. Rowe ate another powerbomb, but Taylor missed the splash. Hanson then missed a top rope splash, and lee went up top and missed a moonsault. DESTROYER by Rowe and he picked up the win. War Machine defeated Shane Taylor & Keith Lee [***½] Shane Taylor & Keith Lee suffer their first loss as the war continues. This was a very good match, with hoss guys doing all kinds of wild shit and keeping a tremendous intensity throughout. This was really enjoyable and I am digging this feud, which is not over.

– Post match, Taylor attacked War Machine with chair shots. This is not over.

ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship Tournament First Round Match: Leon St. Giovanni, Jason Kincaid & Shaheem Ali vs. The Cabinet (King, Titus and Coleman): Ali and King started, doing some flashy back and forth, leading to a stand off. Ali tried to shake hands, but King slapped him and the Cabinet then beat him down in their corner. They all took a knee, and got attacked and Kincaid hit a blockbuster to the floor. Back in and they worked over Coleman, with Ali covering for 2. Giovanni tagged in as they triple teamed Coleman. Kincaid dropped the straps and then got distracted by Titus, allowing Coleman to take control as we took a break. Post break, the Cabinet worked the heat on Kincaid. Ali would get the hot tag, he ran wild on King for a bit with knee strikes and a dropkick. It broke down, with Giovanni hitting a flatliner on Titus for 2. King and Titus eventuality double-teamed Ali, Kincaid made a comeback with another blockbuster variation and then set Titus in the tree of woe. They then hit a trio of dropkicks, including Kincaid and Giovanni hitting coast-to-coast versions for the near fall. The Cabinet made the comeback, Giovanni crashed and burned on the Phoenix splash, and Coleman hit the sky-high leg drop for the win. The Cabinet defeated Leon St. Giovanni, Jason Kincaid & Shaheem Ali [**¾] Pretty good match overall, thanks to the really spirited second half. The Cabinet as an act does nothing for me, but this was fun.

Silas Young vs. Jay Lethal: The crowd was very pro Lethal here, he and Young went back and forth early, nice pacing here as they worked with purpose, using counters and then working into some near falls. After another back and forth series, Young hit the dropkick and sent Young to the floor. Lethal hit the suicide dive, slammed Young to the barricade and went for a second and connected. Lethal connected with chops, and then hit the third suicide dive. Adam Cole then arrived and joined commentary as they took a commercial break. Post break, Young was in control and working the heat on Young. Young worked a solid heat, hitting some suplexes and then grounding Lethal with a chinlock. Lethal slowly fought back, but Young kept cutting him off. Lethal managed to fight back with a series of kicks as Cole ran down Corino on commentary. Lethal went for the lethal injection, Young avoided and went for misery but Lethal hit the lethal combination. Lethal up top and hits the elbow drop, which got 2. Lethal then went for the injection, Young avoided and then hit aback breaker. A knee strike and cutter followed, and that got 2 as Cole went to ringside. Kyle O’Reilly arrived and attacked. They brawled at ringside, and O’Reilly got a chair and set Cole in it. Young had control and then took out O’Reilly, but that allowed lethal to roll him up for the win. Jay Lethal defeated Silas Young @ 10:52 via pin [**¾] That was going well and heating up until the finish, which felt like a wet blanket, killing the intensity they had built. Also, I don’t care that it was due to a distraction, Young losing on TV days before his title shot was poor booking. If he wasn’t winning, then they should have just done the DQ finish with everyone brawling to maintain his momentum. Instead, Young loses and then poses with the belt with an even smaller chance of winning the title in the eyes of the audience.

– Everyone brawled post match, O’Reilly hit Cole with the brainbuster as Young bailed up the ramp and posed with the title.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

This was an overall solid show this week; the opener was easily the best match, but the main event booking left something to be desired.
