Csonka’s ROH TV Review 4.26.17

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Shane Taylor defeated Lio Rush @ 7:25 via pin [**½]
Top Prospect Tournament Final: Josh Woods defeated John Skyler @ 9:30 via submission [**¾]
TV Title Match: Marty Scurll defeated Frankie Kazarian @ 8:15 via pin [**]

With Lucha Underground on hiatus, I will be trying to fit NXT into the weekly schedule, and hopefully going forward..

– Christopher Daniels cut a promo about wanting to beat the best as the ROH Champion, noting that he wants Cody following the attack over WrestleMania weekend. Coy jokes about Daniels’ various nick names (almighty & the fallen angel) and then says he half expected to see him covered with Stardust. Cody wants a title shot here and now, but then backtracks and makes fun of Baltimore, noting that it wasn’t worth it here tonight. Cody wants the title shot at the May 12th PPV, and Daniels said if it were up to him he’d add Cody into the match. Cody says he was born a Rhodes, doesn’t wait in line and doesn’t pay dues. He says Daniels ROH heart and integrity, but what if he (a part timer) took that title from Daniels. Good promo segment with both guys playing their roles well, but even if it plays into the heel role he was selling there, Cody losing against Lethal at Supercard of Honor and getting into a title match comes off poorly because it makes Lethal’s win in a big time stipulation match seem meaningless.

– Kazarian puts over Scurll as a great villain, and promises to take the chip off of his shoulder and replace it with the ROH TV Title.

Lio Rush vs. Shane Taylor w/Caprice Coleman: This is part of the Rebellion vs. Machine Guns and friends feud, where the Rebellion recruited Rush; he not only refused but swerved them at one point. After trading strikes, Rush picked up the pacing and they worked to the floor. Taylor countered a RANA, ate a few kicks and then caught the high cross, posting Rush and slamming him off of the apron. Post break, Rush attempts to fire up, hits a series of strikes but was cut off almost immediately. Rush again picks up the pace, lays in kicks and hits the tornado DDT for the near fall. Coleman distracts Rush, but Rush takes him out and then follows with a dive; back in and Taylor avoids the frog splash, hit the lariat and sitout powerbomb for the win. Shane Taylor defeated Lio Rush @ 7:25 via pin [**½] This was an overall solid match, but with Rush on his way out and Taylor needing credibility as a singles performer, the finish was poorly done; Taylor should have dominated and won clean with no distractions.

– Post match, Taylor the works over Rush and the Machine Guns, who had come to check on Rush. Coleman joins in and Taylor takes out Sabin with a second rope splash.

Top Prospect Tournament Final: Josh Woods vs. John Skyler: Woods took it to the ground right away, working his ground game and looking for the early advantage. Woods keeps Skyler grounded, looking to work the arm, but Skyler escapes and eats a jumping knee strike. Skyler retreats to the ropes, and then catches Woods with a cheap shot and takes control. Post break, Skyler maintains the heat and hits a running senton for 2. Skyler then works over Woods in the ropes and then hits another running senton for 2. Woods counters the next senton attempt into an arm bar, but Skyler escapes and hits the Finlay roll for 2. Woods lands knee strikes and an overhead belly to belly for 2. The running knee strike follows, they battle up top, Skyler looks for southern salvation, but Woods escapes. They battle on the apron and Skyler hits a spear, and then hits one in the ring for 2. Woods cuts off the next spear with a knee strike and then hits a GTS variation for 2. They trade strikes, but Skyler hits a superkick for 2. Uppercuts follow, Skyler fights off a German, but Woods hits a chaos theory and then transitions into the arm bar, and then a knee bar. Josh Woods defeated John Skyler @ 9:30 via submission [**¾] Pretty good match overall, but it just felt as if it was missing something. I just never really got into it.

– But before Woods could enjoy his victory, David Starr arrives and attacks; laying out Woods with a rolling forearm. Starr has the mic and congratulates Woods and then low blows him. Starr says he is the top international star today, and introduces himself to the crowd.

– Adam Cole cuts a promo, telling the Young Bucks that they need to put their issues behind then, and they need to go back to being Bullet Club.

TV Title Match: Champion Marty Scurll vs. Frankie Kazarian: They worked a basic back and forth, until Kaz cut off Scurll with a right and then hit the leg drop in the ropes and then sort of hit a slingshot DDT to the apron; it was ugly. Post break, Scurll started to work the arm to set up the chicken wing. Kaz fired up, hitting lariats and a neck breaker. The back stabber and unprettier followed and Kaz covered for 2. Kaz maintained control, hitting forearm strikes, but Scurll cuts off the springboard and looks for the chicken wing, but Kaz counters with a cradle only to eat a brain buster for a close 2. Scurll then grabs him umbrella, but Kaz stops that and hits the slingshot cutter for the near fall. Scurll quickly grabs the fingers and does the finger break spot, Scurll gets the umbrella but Kaz stops him. Scurll gets powder and blinds the ref; Kaz hits the ace of spades, but the ref is still down. Adam Page is out, distracts Kaz and then hits him with a chair, allowing Scurll to roll him up for the win. Marty Scurll defeated Frankie Kazarian @ 8:15 via pin [**] Largely overbooked trash, ending Scurll’s run of good to great TV matches on ROH TV.

– Scurll claims he has beaten everyone, and there is no more competition. Matt Sydal then made his return, Scurll bailed as Sydal informed him that he wanted a shot at the title.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Average

After a few weeks of good and fun TV, tonight’s show fell completely flat, average is the best way to describe things, from the booking to the in-ring to the return of Sydal; nothing was bad, but at the same time I wouldn’t say anything connected with me or was what I would call good. It was a show.
