Csonka’s ROH TV Review 5.03.17

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Vinny Marseglia) defeated Coast 2 Coast (Leon St. Giovanni & Shaheem Ali) @ 6:35 via pin [**½]
– Matt Sydal defeated Flip Gordon @ 5:55 via pin [**]
ROH World Title #1 Contendership Four Corner Survival Match: Jay Lethal defeats Hangman Page and Jay White and Silas Young @ 15:30 via pin [***]

The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Vinny Marseglia) vs. Coast 2 Coast (Leon St. Giovanni & Shaheem Ali): TK O’Ryan and his crutches accompany the Kingdom to the ring. Te Kingdom attacked at the bell, but Coast 2 Coast quickly fought back, sending the Kingdom to the floor and hitting dives. Post break, the Kingdom took the heat until Ali fought back and made the tag. LSG ran wild with chops, and hit a springboard high cross. The rolling lariat followed, Ali then took out Coast 2 Coast and then set him in the tree of WHOA. Taven cut off the Coast 2 Coast dropkicks with a superkick and then a swanton by Coast 2 Coast and angel’s wings by Taven finished Ali. The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Vinny Marseglia) defeated Coast 2 Coast (Leon St. Giovanni & Shaheem Ali) @ 6:35 via pin [**½] Fun and solid opening match, Coast 2 Coast is such a fun undercard tag team and always works hard; I loved Taven sending Daniels a message by stealing his finish ahead of their ROH title match.

– We get highlights of the Hardys vs. Young Bucks from Supercard of Honor, which was an awesome match. The Bucks then arrived, claim their issues with Adam Cole have been settled. They ten issued an open challenge to any team in the back (calling out Demolition, Billy & Chuck and the Rock & Roll Express, but not the Revival) for next week and The Squad (Kenny & Mikey) arrived to accept the challenge, they hit the ring but ate superkicks and were laid out

Matt Sydal vs. Flip Gordon: They worked a solid back and forth, with some fun and athletic counters; Gordon did a series of kip ups, and Sydal then worked leg kicks, but got frustrated with Gordon’s athletic counters. Sydal then attacked with more kicks, chops followed; Gordon then hit a springboard sling blade and then a PELE. Gordon the hit a PK and a standing moonsault for 2. Gordon up top, but Sydal avoids the 450, and hits the standing moonsault for 2. Spin kick connects for Gordon, but he eats a knee stroke and the shooting star press is cut off with a kick, and Gordon covers for 2. Sydal cuts him off with the boot, the shooting star press finishes it. Scurll attacks post match, but Sydal sends him packing.Matt Sydal defeated Flip Gordon @ 5:55 via pin [**] This was a solid but disjointed outing, with Sydal getting momentum ahead of challenging Scurll for the TV title.

– Adam Cole is here for story time, noting that all is well with Bullet Club, and that they would prove it next week. He and Cody face Dalton Castle & Christopher Daniels next week.

– Christopher Daniels joins commentary.

Jay Lethal vs. Hangman Page vs. Jay White vs. Silas Young: They all brawl at the bell, work through the various parings and then all going for pin attempts, leading to a stalemate. Good action and pacing to begin, with everyone getting some time to shine, with Daniels doing a good job on commentary of putting over all of them as viable competitors. I like that they aren’t messing around, and are not only keeping the action going but are also avoiding a lot of the trappings of the multi-man match; they hit the big tower of doom spot and everyone is down. Post match, White slaps around Lethal, which just fires him up. The hip toss, dropkick combo follows but Young tosses him to the floor. Young and White trade strikes, Young then hits a second rope BACK RAKE, which I found hilarious. Page and Young then spit at each other and brawl, with a good and hard hitting back and forth. Page takes control, but White takes him out with the missile dropkick. Young & Lethal battle on the apron, White then hits a suicide dive to the floor, heads up top and wipes everyone out with a big senton dive, Post break, White hits a dead lift German on Page, but Lethal returns and hits the Lethal combination for a near fall. Young is on the floor, favoring his knee. Lethal up top, but Young recovers and shoves him off and to the floor before whipping him into the barricade. Page then hits the lariat on White back in the ring, rite of passage countered by White, Young back in and hits the Finlay roll into the moonsault for 2 as Lethal makes the save. Lethal on Young and Lethal will challenge for the title on May 12th. Jay Lethal defeats Hangman Page and Jay White and Silas Young @ 15:30 via pin [***] Good main event, but it never heated up and hit the next level. Lethal winning was the right call, as it will make for a good match and makes sense in terms of the recent angles and his issues with Cody and desire to win back the ROH title.

– Cody arrives and stares down with Daniels and Lethal.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

This was a really solid and easy to watch episode of ROH TV; it was a focused episode, with Taven & Sydal got some momentum ahead of their title matches while also locking in Lethal for the May 12th PPV main event.
