Csonka’s ROH TV Review 6.10.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

* ROH Tag Team Champions The Addiction (Daniels and Kazarian) kicked off the show, and were setting up their tag title match with reDRagon. After the opening credits, we find out the Bobby Fish was attacked in the parking lot (couldn’t make it across the border actually) and that O’Reilly would have to go it alone if he wanted his title shot. Daniels was awesome noting that, “the contract states that we are defending against Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish, not Kyle O’Reilly and a suitable opponent.” Nice promo work from the heel champions, who came off as complete sleaze bags.

Kyle O’Reilly defeated Champions The Addiction: O’Reilly rushed the ring with a ton of babyface fire and ran wild early on the champions. The champions cut him off and used double teams to keep their advantage, but O’Reilly fought well and some miscommunication between the champions allowed O’Reilly to stay in the match. They kept a great pace for this short sprint, O’Reilly hit the rolling butterfly suplexes and had the arm bar on Kazarian but Daniels made the save with the title belt for the DQ. O’Reilly ate celebrity rehab, but then Sydal and ACH made the save. The work was really good and a lot of fun while it lasted, and O’Reilly showed great fire. The big issue with the match is that it feels like another bait and switch. I gave them a pass last week because it was the debut show and because it wasn’t exactly designed to be a debut show. Last week they set up the tag title match and this week we didn’t get it. Combine that with last week’s stuff and you’re not endearing yourself to the new fan base. I fully understand that we’re building to the PPV match, but looking at this as a fresh show to a new group of fans and I feel that it sends a poor message.

* We get a Mark Briscoe promo, hyping his Best in the World PPV match with Donovan Dijak.

Jushin Thunder Liger defeated Dalton Castle: If you’ve never seen Dalton Castle, he is basically wrestling’s version of Freddie Mercury and has manservants. He does a wacky gimmick, but can turn it on when he gets serious. Liger’s reactions to Castle’s shenanigans were great here. They worked through the long commercial break, Liger took Castle to the floor and hit the cannonball and then posed with the servants. This angered Castle, who then took control. Liger made his comeback, they had some back and forth and they did a few near falls. Liger then hit the Liger bomb and brain buster for the win. There were certainly some fun moments, but it was a rather average effort as far as the body of the match goes. Post match they shook hands and embraced; this had to be a cool moment for Castle.

* Backstage Liger meets with Cheeseburger, and tries to show him the palm strike. Liger is apparently a big fan of Cheeseburger.

Cheeseburger vs. Brutal Bob Evans went to a no contest: We get a video package, from March 28th, showing the breakup of these men. They brawled right away, Cheeseburger used the palm strike but Evans hit a shoulder block but refused to cover for three, instead opting to beat on Cheeseburger more. Cheeseburger fought back, and the battled through the apron but Evans side slammed him through the commentary table and the match was waved off. This did nothing for me at all, you are building to one of your few PPVs of the year, and just dedicated five minutes of TV time to a feud that’s not even what I would classify a mid-card attraction. The idea behind this was good, but not for the feud that it was pushing.

* Jay Lethal hypes next week’s contract signing with Jay Briscoe.

* reDRagon vs. The Addiction for the tag titles in a no DQ match is official for the June 19th best in the World PPV.

Champions The Kingdom (Bennett and Taven) w/Maria vs. Bullet Club (Anderson and Gallows) went to a no contest: Anderson has been infatuated with Maria, so he chased her at the bell and Bennett made the save. Everyone brawled to the floor, with Taven hitting a big dive to give the champions the early advantage. The Kingdom teased a spike piledriver on the floor, but Anderson caught Taven with the stun gun and we then went to the commercial. The rules were basically thrown out the window here as everyone was in and working this as if it were a tornado tag match. It was fine because it worked, but you can’t do it all the time. They went back and forth, and Anderson threw down red shoes and then Bennett did, and then they both tossed him down as they brawled and that was that, we got a DQ. Post match Gallows grabbed Maria and brought her into the ring, and they tried to give her the magic killer, but Bennett made the save and at the stun gun. Taven then ate the magic killer through two chairs as Bullet Club stood tall. The DQ finish was predictable here, even in the non-title environment, due to the Kingdom being the IWGP tag champions and New Japan not wanting a finish here. It would have been fine if it was the only one on the show, but unfortunately it wasn’t. It was enjoyable as far as what they did in the ring, but was again too much bullshit forme.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Not So Good
The 411
For me the two no contests and then the DQ finish really hurt the show overall. It’s not that they were a bad idea in theory, but lumping them all into one show made it feel almost like you were being slapped in the face and telling you that your time wasn’t important, but thanks for watching these matches with no resolution. And then you add in the bait and switch after last week’s bait and switch and you’re sending the worst possible fans both new and old. Again, in theory these have a purpose, but you cannot have them all happen on one show like this. The in ring wasn’t anything special this week, so with that being the case along with all of the other stuff, we’re going thumbs down this week.
