Csonka’s ROH TV Review 8.17.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Lio Rush defeated Donovan Dijak @ 11:00 via pin [***¾]
#1 Contender’s Match: The Young Bucks defeated Roppingi Vice @ 12:30 via pin [****]

– We get highlights from last week’s show, where Nigel gave in and booked Lethal vs. Cole for Death Before Dishonor.

Donovan Dijak vs. Lio Rush: This is a battle of the last two top prospect tournament winners; they even showed video of how both men won their tournaments. Dijak took control right away, using his size and power as he tossed Rush around with ease. Rush managed to sidestep a spear, with Dijak hitting the barricade. He then followed with a RANA, sending Dijak into the barricade again. Rush argued with Prince Nana at ringside, and when he got back in the ring he got turned inside out with a big boot for a near fall. They played the big man vs. little man formula well, Dijak looked vicious and Rush sold the beating really well. Rush came back with a great series of kicks, sent Dijak to the floor and then hit a moonsault to send us to the commercial break. They showed great fire in the opening stretch, and when we came back from the break, Rush used his speed to keep things moving and scored a near fall off of the tornado DDT. Rush went up top, Dijak tried to stop him but got kicked off. Rush went for the frog splash but Dijak goozled him and launched him into a sitout powerbomb for a near fall. A little rough there in the transition stuff, but the effort is appreciated. Rush countered feast your eyes and fired back with kicks and a DDT. An enziguri to a kneeling Dijak scored another near fall. Rush worked a rapid-fire series of strikes, but Dijak hit the choke breaker. Nana told him to do it again, and the delay allowed Rush to counter with a reverse RANA and the frog splash for an amazing near fall that the crowd completely bought and chanted, “that was 3!” Dijak then slickly countered a tornado DDT into feast your eyes, but Rush countered out of that into a cradle for the big upset! Post match, Dijak attacked Rush, leading to Jay White and Kamaitachi hitting the ring for a big brawl, which sets up their four-way at the PPV. That was a really great match, played well with the styles against each other, and Dijak losing because he slowed to punish Rush further at the orders of Nana. The build for the PPV match was also appreciated.

– Dalton Castle was about to cut a promo, and the Cabinet interrupted to seemingly set up a six-man match.

– We are getting a contract signing with Lethal and Cole later tonight.

– The tag title match is in danger, as the Guns are injured and War Machine were attacked earlier today by Keith Lee and Shane Taylor.

– Kevin Kelly speaks with Hangman Adam Page. Page says every move he makes is for Bullet Club. They are after all of the gold in ROH and NJPW. He wants the IWGP tag titles, but also has issues with Jay Briscoe. He plans to take the titles in Japan (well he failed there) and then plans to put Jay Briscoe down. Jay arrived and they brawled at ringside.

– The Addiction were out during the break and said there will be no tag title match tonight, and claimed they had the night off. Roppingi Vice arrived and claimed that they were healthy and said since they spent a month undefeated in Japan and since a tag title match was advertised and challenged the Addiction to a title match. The Young Bucks then arrived, and they threw their hat in the ring and said they’d take the possible 2½ star match and make it a five star classic. Nigel said the Addiction signed for a different match, and while Roppongi deserves a title shot, the Bucks do not. He then booked Roppongi vs. The Bucks with the winners getting a title shot in two weeks.

The Young Bucks (Nick and Matt) vs. Roppingi Vice (Barreta and Romero): The Addiction are on commentary, discussing how smart they are. They worked a great pace early, with some good teases of finishers and signature stuff. Vice sent Nick to the floor, took control with some double teams and worked over Matt for a while until Nick made the save with a superkick. They to control and did the terminator rise spot and then followed with stereo suicide dives; the crowd is hot for everything they’ve done here. The Bucks took the heat on Barreta, isolating him in their corner and working double teams until Romero ran in to put a stop to that. Vice hit a doomsday knee strike on the floor as we went to the commercial break. Post break, the Bucks took control back, running wild with superkicks and rapid fire moves. Matt connected with a top rope elbow drop on Barreta for a near fall. Matt then worked the suck it strikes, but Romero returned and he ate double knee strikes. Nick joined the party as it broke down. Romero hit the forever clotheslines on Matt, who came back with running suck it clotheslines before Romero turned him inside out with a lariat. They looked to hit strong zero on the floor, but Nick made the save. The Addiction then talked shit to the Bucks and they ate superkicks. Back in the ring the Bucks threw a superkick party and Nick then hit a 450 for a great near fall. The Bucks set to put Barreta away, but Nick flew to the floor to take out the Addiction. Barreta hit Matt with the dude buster for a near fall. Barreta then hit the top rope German, and then the running knee for a near fall, which got turned into a crucifix by Matt for the win. Post match the Addiction beat down the Bucks to stand tall. Your mileage will vary, not everyone likes the Bucks, but if you’re into their style of matches, this one was awesome. It’s no surprise, these two teams have worked a ton together and know what to d and when to do it. The only complaints were too much Addiction shenanigans and the finish felt flat.

Cole and Lethal Contract Signing: Nigel held court for the signing, Lethal refused to sit but Adam Cole wanted to do story time. He wanted to know if Lethal was sure about this, because while he may be mad now, he will be worse when he loses that title. Cole says the head saving was not personal, it was to prove that he can take anything from Lethal at any time. He put over Lethal, but claimed that he was the best in the world and they will go to war at Death before Dishonor. Cole won’t try to steal the show, he only wants to steal the title. Lethal dropped the dress shirt during this and then said that every match he’s had in ROH has been about an ROH Title, to prove that he was the greatest by beating outsiders like Alberto El Patron, he and Briscoe had issues but it was about the title just like every time he and Strong beat the hell out of each other. The ROH Title are the most prestigious things in wrestling, but this time it is not about the title, this is personal. He can’t wait to erase Cole’s face from his memory. He’s coming to Las Vegas to fight. Lethal signed the contract, and Cole claimed he just signed away the ROH Title. Lethal then dropped scissors on the table and attacked Cole. They did the big crazy fists brawl until Cole hit a superkick. Lethal fought back with a low blow as Cole held the title up and he then grabbed the scissors, trying to cut Cole’s hair, but the Bucks arrived to save him.

The final score: review Very Good
The 411
That was a really great edition of ROH TV, with the focus being almost all on the PPV, while the rest built for after the PPV. We got two great matches, the strong closing segment and the entire show just flew by. For the first time in a long time, ROH TV felt really strong heading into a PPV.
