Csonka’s ROH TV Review 9.28.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Silas Young defeated Toru Yano @ 8:44 via pin []
– Punishment Damian Martinez defeated Cheeseburger @ 1:35 via pin [NR]
– Hiroshi Tanahashi and Michael Elgin defeated Adam Cole and Hangman Page @ 16:45 via pin [**¾]

Silas Young vs. Toru Yano: We got the typical Yano shtick here, trying to steal the win off of the handshake with a rollup, doing the break spot and also running from Young. Young eventually had enough of that shit and started to beat on Yano. Yano tried to remove the turnbuckle for his usual spot, but was confused by the US turnbuckle pads. Young was back on the attack as we took a commercial break. Post break and Young was still in control until Yano side stepped a charge and sent Young to the floor. Yano then got some scissors and cut off the turnbuckle. Yano smacked around Young with the turnbuckle, they trade strikes and Yano tried to pull the hair and finally did. Yano tried to beg off and then went for the low blow, which was blocked and Young hit a cutter for a near fall. Young worked the heat, getting a lariat off the ropes and then the hangman’s neck breaker for a near fall. Yano avoided a dive and retreated to the corner with the exposed buckle, which Young ran into and Yano cradled him for a near fall. Low blow by Yano led to a near fall. He argued with the ref, so Young kicked him low and then sent him to the exposed buckle and rolled him up with the tights for the win. This was every Yano match ever, he just got out Yano’d.

– Post match the Briscoes ran off Young to save their partner for the six-man title tournament.

Christopher Daniels Cuts a Great Promo: Daniels explained that he felt he was the smartest man in the ring, he always knew what to say and how to manipulate his opponent. But now he is here to tell the truth. Many people that started after him are long gone, and he is looking to the end. Nothing lasts forever, and he knows athletes die two deaths. He knows he will have his last title match at some point, he will hand the ref his title and he may not get it back. He doesn’t want to let the title go and asks how much his opponents will sacrifice. He has been a father and husband, and if he woke up tomorrow and only had this title he would be fine because he is a terrible father and husband; the only thing he has ever been good at is pro wrestling. The title is the most important thing he’s ever held and a life without this is not a life he is interested in. At All Star Extravaganza, with his best friend at his side and the titles hanging over head and two of the best teams in front of him, ask yourself, what will he do to keep the thing he loves. He will do anything, risk anything and he will be the guy that tells time to FUCK OFF. Because this will last forever, and the Addiction will end the Guns and Bucks. I loved that. Superb work from Daniels as the final set up for Ladder War Vi, and having him cut the promo by himself was absolutely the right call.

Punishment Damian Martinez w/BJ Whitmer and Kevin Sullivan vs. Cheeseburger: Cheeseburger was one of four men that Martinez killed when he debuted in his new persona. Corino and Sullivan bantered at commentary, as Corino wanted to know why Whitmer was chosen instead of him. They focused on this as Martinez destroyed Cheeseburger. Cheeseburger tried to fire up, failed and ate a chokeslam for the win. Post match Martinez and Whitmer beat down Cheeseburger, Ferrara tried to make the save and also got destroyed. This angle is doing nothing for me at all. Also, Martinez felt largely ignored for Sullivan and Corino.

– Adam Cole cuts a promo to hype the main event.

– At ringside, Corino looks at the golden spike that Whitmer left, and wonders if he needs to meet Sullivan in the desert. We then get footage from the break, where Whitmer says that Corino needs to give into being the evil spirit and then he will know that they are his salvation, and he may be theirs.

– O’Reilly is out on commentary.

Adam Cole and Hangman Page vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi and Michael Elgin: Page and Elgin started off things; Page tried to attack but got tossed around. Elgin hit the stalling vertical suplex and we took a commercial break. Post break, Tanahashi ran wild on Page until Cole hit a cheap shot. Tanahashi fought back and mocked the Adam Cole BAY BAY pose, but he got cut off and then he and Elgin got tossed to the floor. Page hit the shooting star press off the apron onto both Tanahashi and Elgin, allowing Bullet Club Baltimore to take the heat on Tanahashi. They worked a solid house show style heat, lots of mocking from Cole and keeping Elgin out of the action. Tanahashi hit a desperation neck breaker and finally got the tag to Elgin. Elgin shot Cole to the floor and worked over Page, hit the falcon arrow (HE DID THE DEAL) and that got a near fall. Page managed to hit a DDT, and we went to another break. Post break Elgin countered the destroyer, and hit a German to the buckles. Tag to Tanahashi, he worked with Cole, hitting sling blade and then heading to the ropes for a senton, which got 2. They traded strikes center ring, with both guys firing up. Cole hit a superkick but Tanahashi hit sling blade again. Cole and Tanahashi made tags; Elgin hit a German on Page and then a lariat. The powerbomb got 2 as Cole made the save and it broke down. Page avoided the double team from Tanahashi and Elgin, Cole ate a lariat from Elgin and Elgin countered the rite of passage. Elgin lit up Page with strikes and a lariat, which got 2. Buckle bomb, Elgin bomb, finish. This was a pretty good match overall, but it just never picked up or had any real sense of urgency. They went through the motions and we got the finish. Elgin gets the win to get momentum for the PPV, but Page’s booking doesn’t look so bright. He won the huge PPV match against Jay Briscoe, lost here and will lose at the PPV because O’Reilly vs. Cole is the end game. It feels as if the big win over Briscoe has been completely ignored.

– Here is the card for tomorrow’s PPV…

The final score: review Not So Good
The 411
This was a completely forgettable and lackluster go home show for the All Star Extravaganza PPV. The only thing worth seeing was the Daniels promo, which was great.
