Csonka’s Smackdown Review 5.02.17

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Jinder Mahal defeated Sami Zayn @ 10:55 via pin [**½]
– Tye Dillinger defeated Aiden English @ 1:03 via pin [NR]
– Carmella and Natalya defeated Naomi and Charlotte @ 11:55 via pin [**¾]
– Dolph Ziggler defeated Sin Cara @ 4:35 via pin [**]
US Title Match: Kevin Owens defeated Champion Chris Jericho @ 12:40 via pin [***½]

– Jinder Mahal does a photo shoot with the WWE title, but dad’s home (Shane McMahon) and takes the belt back. Jinder vows to win the tile at Backlash and Shane books him against Sami Zayn tonight.

Shane McMahon Talks: Shane plays to the crowd, and welcomes Chris Jericho to Smackdown. Jericho says this is a special night, this is the new show of Jericho, smack it down maaaaaaaaaaaaaan. Shane is thrilled that Jericho is here, but on his first night he has to defend the title against Kevin Owens. But wait, AJ Styles is here to make sure Jericho understand that he’s the face that runs the place. Styles says they were friends and enemies, and that a lot has changed. The crowd loves Styles, and he informs Jericho that he’s in the house that Styles built. He would love to face Jericho at Backlash and take the title from him. Jericho says he made KO tap and is now the new face of America. Jericho threatens to put Styles on the list, but Kevin Owens interrupts. He says this is the most pathetic thing he’s ever seen, running down Shane, Jericho and AJ. Tonight he will beat Jericho and take back what is his. Styles then heads u the ramp and attacks Owens, beating him down until refs separated them. Solid opening segment, with AJ playing off of his history with Jericho while still reminding everyone that he’s the #1 contender for the US title.

– Prior to the match, we see Baron Corbin’s Talking Smack assault on Zayn, which led to Corbin being suspended.

Jinder Mahal vs. Sami Zayn: The Singh brothers are with Mahal. They did some back and forth; countering each others work on the arm. RANA and chops by Sami, he picks up the pace and hits a dropkick and sends Mahal to the floor as we take a break. Post break, Mahal works the heat, picking up near falls and laying the boots to Sami. He then locks in the chinlock, grounding Sami. Mahal then took Sami up top, but he fought him off only to run into a running knee strike, Mahal covered for 2. Sami started to fire up hit clotheslines and a high cross for the near fall. The Singhs distract Sami, he and Mahal trade roll ups. Sami then went for a tornado DDT but they blew the spot and it looked like shit. One of the Singhs saved Mahal from the helluva, the other tripped up Sami and that allowed Mahal to hit the cobra clutch slam for the win. Jinder Mahal defeated Sami Zayn @ 10:55 via pin [**½] This was an average match, with the right man winning since Mahal is Orton’s next challenger. The rather big botch did the match no favors and the interference was expected, but Mahal didn’t exactly come off like a world-beater here. In all honesty, since he’s Orton’s challenger, he really just should have won clean. If you want to make a guy, make him.

– Becky Lynch runs into Natalya, Tamina, Carmella and Ellsworth. They say that they have her back and want her to join them telling Becky that she deserves the title shots, Becky says she will think it over.

– We get a Shinsuke Nakamura video package. Ziggler rants backstage and says Nakamura hasn’t even proven himself. He rants about Shane & Bryan’s decision-making skills, and Shane appears. Ziggler promises to impress against Sin Cara tonight.

– Aiden English is here to do his singing gimmick. Tye interrupts and makes his way to the ring.

Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English: English attacks at the bell, but Tye fires up and makes the comeback, laying the boots to English. The Tye breaker finishes it. Tye Dillinger defeated Aiden English @ 1:03 via pin [NR] SQUASH for Tye, who is off to a good start so far.

– English throws a temper tantrum post match.

– Jericho walks and Renee interviews him. Aiden English walks by and is crying. Jericho tries to cheer him up, and Jericho puts him on the list. He cries, and then Renee makes the list. Jericho called her “Ronnie.”

– We get highlights of last week’s Naomi vs. Charlotte match, which was interrupted by Natalya, Tamina, Carmella and Ellsworth. Charlotte says that they just stopped the inevitable, and the title is her destiny. Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella attack and beat her down. They welcome her to Smackdown and say that they’ll see her out there later.

Naomi and Charlotte vs. Carmella and Natalya w/Tamina & Ellsworth: Naomi has to go it alone due to the attack on Charlotte. She works leg kicks on Carmella, and then lays in the speedball kicks. Natalya tags in, and talks trash to Naomi, but Naomi hits the sunset flip for 2. Natalya looks to take control, but Naomi hits a RANA, and sends Natalya to the floor. Natalya cuts her off, posts her and takes control, slamming Naomi to the mat. Carmella tags back in, they work double teams and Carmella covers for 2. Carmella uses the hair to maintain control, Tamina gets on some cheap shots and Natalya returns to wok over Naomi in the corner. Natalya and Naomi both go for running cross bodies and do a double down. Charlotte’s music hits and she slowly makes her way to the ring. Naomi gets the tag and Charlotte is all fired up and runs wild. She hits the neck breaker and running boot to Natalya, takes out Carmella and then works over Natalya in the corner. Natalya then cuts her off and we head to a break. Post break, Charlotte tries to fight off Carmella, but Carmella uses the hair to cut her off and then misses the broncobuster. Tag to Naomi, she hits a great high cross on Carmella and then a kick and jawbreaker follows. The rear view connects, but Natalya distracts the ref. Naomi takes her out, Ellsworth distracts Naomi, allowing Carmella to pick up the pin. Carmella and Natalya defeated Naomi and Charlotte @ 11:55 via pin [**¾] Pretty good match, with the good old school layout attacking Charlotte and the having her make the courageous babyface return to fight through the pain. Since they want her to be a babyface, that was smart. Naomi really shined off of the great hot tag, and the post match with Lynch I also liked how they did the tease. This sets up the expected six-woman tag or six-pack challenge in the coming weeks or at Backlash.

– Post match the mea girls beat down Charlotte & Naomi; Lynch’s music hits and she enters the ring and shakes hands with the mean girls, but then slams Ellsworth into them and then fires up and fights them all off until Tamina cuts her off with a superkick. The mean girls then toss out Charlotte & Naomi, and beat Lynch down and stand tall.

– New Day is coming to Smackdown, eventually.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Sin Cara: They did some back and forth grappling to begin, with Cara hitting a springboard cross body and then a back elbow. Cara then laid in the leg kicks and followed with a moonsault press. Cara then sent Ziggler to the floor with an enziguri and followed with a suicide dive that almost was a disaster as his feet got caught in the ropes. That could have been really bad. Ziggler then took control, and it got a bit sloppy in the transitions, Ziggler then hit the dropkick but Cara countered the fameasser and hit a one armed powerbomb for 2. Ziggler blocked the lionsault with the knees, hit the superkick and won. Dolph Ziggler defeated Sin Cara @ 4:35 via pin [*¾] If I had to guess, no one told creative that Ziggler was being primed to battle Nakamura on PPV. That has to be it, because otherwise, I have no clue whey they would have him go 50-50 with a guy that hasn’t been on a broadcast since the Andre the Giant battle royal and hasn’t won a match since FEBRUARY on Main Event. Poor play from creative there. The worst part is that it wasn’t even good back and forth.

– We get a dancing Lana video, she’s also coming to Smackdown eventually.

– Noam Dar cuts a promo for 205 live, wearing a sweet toupee.

– We then get a Fashion Police video with Breeze & Fandango. They run down a list of charges against the Usos, and Breeze says the bust goes down in Chicago on May 21st at Backlash. That was fun.

US Title Match: Champion Chris Jericho vs. Kevin Owens: AJ Styles has been banned from ringside. They brawl at the bell; Jericho sends Owens to the floor with a dropkick and then attacks the injured hand. Owens avoids Jericho slamming it in the steps like at Payback, and lays the boots to him back in the ring. Owens then hit the running senton for a near fall, and then attacked with chops. Jericho caught Owens with a boot and then a second rope dropkick and mounted strikes. Chops followed, but Owens sidestepped a charge and Jericho fell all the way to the floor. Owens followed and hit the cannonball, rolled him back in and covered for 2 as we went to break. Post break, Jericho fights back, but as he comes off the ropes Owens cuts him off but Jericho avoids the pop up powerbomb, but Owens stops the lionsault with knees and then misses the cannonball. Jericho hits the lionsault for 2. Owens fights off the walls once, but Jericho goes right back to it and locks it in. Owens makes the ropes and rolls to the apron, counters the dropkick and then hits the superkick for 2. Owens looks for the powerbomb but Jericho hits a RANA and rolls for the walls and locks it in again. Owens again struggles for the ropes, crawls and makes it. Owens rolls to the floor; Jericho follows and eats a superkick and DDT on the floor. Back in the ring they go, superkick by Owens and that gets 2. Owens is pissed that Jericho is still alive here, drags him to his feet and Jericho rolls him up for 2. Owens then hits the pop up powerbomb and wins the title. Kevin Owens defeated Champion Chris Jericho @ 12:40 via pin [***½] Overall I felt that this was a very good main event, on par with their effort at Payback. They did an excellent job of playing of each other’s moves, which worked into the fact that they know each other so well. I thought that the post match attack was well done and was a good way to write out Jericho.

– Post match EMTs check on Jericho, but Owens returns and hits another powerbomb. EMTs again help Jericho to his feet, but Owens returns and attacks again. Hr grabs a chair and wraps it around Jericho’s head and posts him, someone’s been watching his EVIL tapes.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

Tonight’s show was an overall solid effort, with the early part of the show doing some effective work in advancing feuds; the real money this week is in the main event and post match angle.
