Csonka’s TNA Impact Review 11.17.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
Non-Title Match: Jessie Godderz defeated Champion Aron Rex @ 6:00 via submission [**¾]
– Brandi Rhodes and Madison Rayne defeated Sienna and Laurel Van Ness @ 6:30 via pin []
#1 Contender’s Match : EC3 defeated Mike Bennett, Trevor Lee and Lashley @ 14:30 via submission [***]
– Mahabali Shera defeated Baraka @ 3:30 via submission [DUD]
– The DCC defeated Eddie Edwards and The Nefarious Brother Nero @ 13:50 via pin [***½]

Champion Aaron Rex vs. Jessie Godderz: This is a non-title, regular rules match, conditioning the feud these two have built after Rex turned heel and used all sorts or shenanigans to retain against Godderz. Rex largely controlled the opening portion of the match, in about a bland a fashion as possible. Godderz continues to out-perform Rex and come across as the star; Rex is just a dude at this point, losing everything that made him standout prior to TNA and failing to “prove everyone wrong’ at almost every turn. Godderz finally fired up to end the woeful heat segment from Rex. Godderz even raked the eyes to get dome payback for All of Rex’s Rex’s bullshit. Good fire from Godderz on the big comeback, bringing some much-needed energy to the match. Rex looked for his royal arch submission, but Godderz escaped into the Adonis lock. Jessie Godderz defeated Champion Aron Rex @ 6:00 via submission [**¾] This was a pretty good match, Godderz needed the win and keeps turning on good performances. Rex feels like he’s sleepwalking through his matches.

– Maria and her mean girls make fun of Allie, as Maria runs down Brandi Rhodes. They threaten Allie not to team with or Help Brandi.

I really dislike the booking here, Kim and Maria hijacked the division for almost a year and now they can’t have Kim drop the title to put someone over big? They had forever to rebuild this division and did an overall poor job doing so.

– Eddie Edwards and Jeff Hardy will face DCC tonight

Sienna and Laurel Van Ness vs. Brandi Rhodes and Madison Rayne: Maria sent Allie to the back as Brandi revealed Madison Rayne as her partner. Brandi and Maria chased each other around for a bit, Rayne and Van Ness go back and forth until Sienna cut Rayne off. They took the heat on Rayne, with Van Ness choking her out in the ropes. Van Ness hit a snap suplex as she continued the heat on Rayne, leading to a double down spot. Sienna and Brandi got the tags, Brandi trying to work spots is amusing, she looks so uncoordinated in there, I am afraid she’s going to get hurt. It broke down, Brandi countered AK47 into cross Rhodes and pinned Sienna. Brandi Rhodes and Madison Rayne defeated Sienna and Laurel Van Ness [*½] Bless Sienna; she tried, but Brandi is not good at all. Just like this match. Brandi pinning Sienna was a poor choice, Sienna should have been so much more for TNA, but the booking of the division has been so poor and focused on Maria and Gail

– Broken Rebecca catches Matt eating Candy, he had so much left because he gave away all the green beans. The Nefarious Brother Nero missed the ice cream social he had planned. Broken Rebecca had videos to show matt to try and jog his memory. Matt then unsubscribed to a Young Bucks newsletter after deleting emails.

#1 Contender’s Match: Mike Bennett vs. EC3 vs. Trevor Lee vs. Lashley: This is one fall to a finish. They all brawled at the bell. EC3 got the early beat down and then Lashley ran wild. Big stalling suplex to Bennett and then Lashley tossed Lee to the floor onto EC3. After a commercial break, we came back to Lee running wild, and then Lashley missed a spear as EC3 sidestepped him. Bennett and Lee worked together to send Lashley to the floor. They then double teamed EC3, and then broke up each other’s pin attempts. They shook hands and made nice as EC3 tried to right back. They of course argued, Lee to the floor and posted Lashley. Back in and he got a near fall on EC3 as Bennett broke it up. Bennett continued to try and boss Lee around as they fought over trying to pin EC3. Lashley back in here, EC3 fired up on Bennett and Lee, hitting the corner splash and then the flapjack on Bennett. Lashley returned to spear EC3 as he tried a double one percenter. It broke down into big moves from everyone, Lee escaped the TKO, but Lashley then took out Bennett. Running cross body to Lee, who countered into the moonsault press counter for two; Lee then got the running double stomp to Bennett and then a dive into EC3 and Lashley. he pacing got much better as Lee ran wild, but EC3 locked in the million-dollar dream on Lee who had to tap.

EC3 defeated Mike Bennett, Trevor Lee and Lashley @ 14:30 via submission [***]

Once they got past all of the cliché fatal four-way stuff, it developed into a good match with a really fun closing stretch. Lee had a really good performance here and looked as if he belonged, which isn’t a surprise if you’ve seen his work out of TNA.

– Back at Hardyland, and Matt watches family videos to try and jog his memory. Matt’s reactions were priceless.

Eli Drake’s Fact of Life: Drake was pissed EC3 won, and then called him to the set. I hate he fake audience track for this. Drake then reminds EC3 that he has choked on recent title chances. Rake challenges EC3 to put his title shot on the line next week. EC3 then says he basically made the same offer weeks ago and declined. Drake then said if EC3 won, he keeps his title shot and promises not to challenge for the title for one year. EC3 again says he offered that deal, but he wants Drake in the title scene, because he wants him to step up so he can be better. EC3 declines, but says he knows Drake came so close and wants it. EC3 does want the match to see who is the better man, will put his title shot on the line but says if he wins, Drake cannot talk for the rest of 2016. Drake accepts.

Drake and EC3 have been really fun together, and I do agree with many that a possible double turn may work best for both.

– Abyss and Crazy Steve harass Jade, she is not amused. Jade then went in search of Rosemary. Jade found Rosemary, who spoke in riddles and promised violence on Jade. Rosemary is great. We’re apparently getting a cage match next week for the vacant knockouts title.

Basille Baraka vs. Mahabali Shera: What did w do to deserve this? Baraka attacked at the bell, working over Shera, who attempted to “Sell.” Baraka laid in strikes, Shera fired up and Baraka then hit a running cross body. Baraka then laid the boots to him, and covered for a near fall as commentary tried to sell that Shera was improving. Shera caught Baraka on the high cross and then hit clotheslines and shoulder blocks. Baraka then got a roll up for 2. Big body slam by Shera, who then locked in the camel clutch and Baraka tapped after being thusly humbled. Dax then ran out, Baraka hit a low blow and Snow made the save. He tried to make nice with Dax and Baraka, but they shunned him. Snow then sent the tribunal packing. NO JOSH AL SNOW IS NOT TRENDING ON TWITTER RIGHT NOW YOU FUCKING LIAR

Mahabali Shera defeated Baraka @ 3:30 via submission [DUD]

This was a lifeless and bad match between two guys pretending to be professional wrestlers. They did stuff, it wasn’t any good and no one cared while the commentary team intentionally lied to us.

Eddie Edwards and The Nefarious Brother Nero vs. DCC (Storm, Bram and Kingston): We get the big brawl to begin. Nero hits the twist of fate on Bram early and then a big dive to the floor, where they all brawled for a bit and DCC took control. In the ring, Kingston and Edwards battled with Kingston hitting an overhead belly to belly. Post break, DCC worked the heat on Edwards. Storm and Nero brawled on the floor, as DCC continued to beat down Edwards. DCC brought in chairs, Edwards made his own comeback and tossed Bram to the floor. Kingston three hit the STO on Edwards, Nero used chair shots on Bram and Storm on the floor. And then Edwards did this…

It broke down into the all out brawl, Eye of the storm to Nero and that got a near fall. Edwards made the save for Nero, but he numbers were too much as the DCC stayed a step ahead of Edwards and Nero. Bram hit the brighter side of suffering off the apron through a table on the floor. Storm countered the twist of fate into a superkick for the win. [***½]

That was a very enjoyable main event, the DCC needed to win and come across as real threats and they did well with that here. It wasn’t pretty, but it wasn’t supposed to be. They had great energy throughout and the DCC came off as threats, setting up a tag title program and possible ;world title program, remember, a frustrated Storm “left TNA” after feeling he was screwed out of the world title.

– Next week we get…

* Eli Drake vs. EC3
* X-Division Elimination Match
* A New Knockouts Champion will be crowned

The final score: review Good
The 411
Despite two really bad matches, this was a goof show, playing well off of the previous weeks and also setting the table for next week and beyond. Far from perfect, and a bit uneven, but an overall good effort.
