Csonka’s TNA One Night Only: Joker’s Wild 3 Review

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

* The show was taped on February 14th at the Impact Zone in Orlando, FL.

* They have Borash and Hemme doing the “random draw” to create our completely random teams.

* Josh Matthews and Jeremy Borash will do commentary for the show. Thank GOD for no Taz, he is horrible on these shows.

The BroMans (Robbie E and Jessie Godderz) defeated Al Snow and Mr. Anderson: If you saw Snow during his Impact appearance during the UK tour, he’s in awesome shape as he’s reportedly been doing over 50 body building competitions. Yes, Snow is actually 51 years old. They did lots of comedy with the BroMans, including Al Snow using “purple nurples” and the BroMans accidentally arm baring each other while Anderson and Snow took selfies. The wrestling was completely secondary, and the finish was a bit sloppy as Snow hit Jessie with head, and then Robbie rolled him up for the win. It wasn’t all bad, and it had its fun moments but I hoped for more from the opener. It seemed to be 90% comedy, and the rest wrestling. But it had it’s small moments.

Rockstar Spud and Awesome Kong defeated Samuel Shaw and DJ Z: Spud appears smitten with Kong, so he offers to start the match and holds the ropes open for her. Spud hit some offense early, and then did comedy as he posed and shook his ass for Kong. I tend to think that if you do comedy more than once that you need to break up the matches and not do them back-to-back like this. Shaw acted creepy towards Kong, which angered Spud. They got the heat on Spud for a bit, Kong got the got tag and ran wild and then Spud hit a splash off of her shoulders for the win. This felt way too similar to the opener in both layout and execution, and needed to be moved away from each other on the card. Poor form from who ever laid out the show. After some shenanigans, Kong kissed Spud post match and he passed out. Kong then carried him to the back.

* EC3 cut a promo about the tournament, and then ran down the poor fans that bank on luck and buy lottery tickets. He won last year’s tournament, and said he would win this year’s as well.

The Wolves (Eddie Edwards and Davey Richards) defeated Bobby Roode and Austin Aries: Part of me wants to complain about the lack of randomness to the teams (one regular tag team and the others are former champions) but this should be good, and could be great. Last year we got Beer Money vs. The Wolves, and that was a really good match (the best on the show) and this has the chance to be that great match for this show. Newsflash, both teams are really good. Seriously, the Wolves are a really good team but we see them regularly; Roode and Aries worked together like they have been working every night as a team. They are great men and yes, we had a really good match. They simply worked well together, they had a clean and exciting tag match with a really fun fine couple minutes with constant counters to finishes, ending with the Wolves getting a double roll up to move on. This flew by and the only bad thing I have to say about this is that I wanted more.

* Spud cut a promo, all covered with lipstick, about being in the finals for the $100,000. He spoke about his room at the Motel 6 and that if Kong played her cards right there could be a continental breakfast in her future. She put her arm around Spud and smiled.

Ethan Carter III and Crazzy Steve defeated Knux and Tyrus: This was the old take two units and split them for a match, and here we go. I completely forgot that the Menagerie was a thing. Tyrus initially refused to lay down, and then they did a finger poke of doom for two as Knux and Steve broke things up. They did comedy; Knux and Steve worked together to beat down Tyrus even though they aren’t on the same team. They struggled to keep the crowd interested outside of a few laughs. Tyrus helped Carter win, and this was simply not good.

Eric Young and Bram defeated Magnus and Tommy Dreamer: Young and Dreamer recently faced on the UK tour, while Bram and Magnus are currently feuding. Bram and Magnus brawled before the bell, which I appreciated since these men are in a feud and are supposed to hate each other. I like Magnus; I feel Dreamer is better used on shows like this rather than Impact appearances, and really like the intense heel vibe that Young and Bram put out. The match was perfectly fine, it hit second gear and stayed there. I was hoping for a bit more, but the heels won by CHEATING and Dreamer did the job, so this worked out fine.

James Storm and Gunner defeated Kenny King and Chris Melendez: Former enemies teaming to face off with current enemies in this one. Both teams reluctantly worked together, Storm and King made fun of their partners until Gunner got pissed and ran wild on King. Storm had a heat segment on Melendez where he worked the good leg, and applied a figure four while he laughed like a mad man. King eventually turned on Melendez, and then Gunner then accidentally speared Melendez allowing Storm to score the pin. Storm did a really good job working with Melendez here, making you forget how rough and green he really is. This was fine overall.

Sonjay Dutt and Gail Kim defeated Tigre Uno and Manik: This has a lot of potential, Dutt is always good on these specials and Uno doesn’t get used enough. Manik is good, and if the guys play base, Kim’s offense will be really fun. They worked a really fun pace, which they needed to as it felt different from the other stuff on the show, which is always good. Kim got a good hot tag, did some lucha with Uno and then it broke down Uno was put away with eat defeat from Kim and then a splash from Dutt. That was a really fun little sprint, one of the more enjoyable matches on the show.

Lashley and Koya defeated The Revolution (Abyss and The Great Sanada): Lashley has to team with a member of the Revolution against the rest of the faction. The story was basic, Koya wanted no part of helping Lashley, leaving him alone to battle Abyss and Sanada. Koya tried to hold Lashley at one point, and Abyss accidentally hit him. He then faced off with Abyss and they brawled. Koya isn’t very good, at all and working with Abyss looked painful at times. Also the crowd didn’t give a shit about it. Storm eventually came out and yelled at Koya and slapped him. He then sent him to the back. Lashley eventually made his own comeback and survived the handicap situation. This felt way longer than it was, and just wasn’t very good. Lashley worked really hard.

* We get a video package, showing how our participants qualified for the match.

$100,000 Winner’s Gauntlet: Participants are: Robbie E, Jessie, Kong, Spud, Richards, Edwards, EC3, Steve, Young, Bram, Storm, Gunner, Dutt, Kim, Lashley and Koya. The ladies starting was fine, but I felt that they could have built to a spot for either where Kong could have cleaned some house or Kim could have come in with some highflying. When EC3 came out Spud charged him and they brawled on the floor, which was appreciated. EC3 and the BroMans worked together and got a lot of run controlling things. Steve, Bram, Storm, Richards and Edwards all got tossed within a 30-second span, leaving Lashley, Young and EC3. Lashley overcame the odds and scored the win and the $100,000. This was a long match with little crowd reaction through out, which was a shame for the performers. They tried, but at the same time it wasn’t the most exciting match or layout; a lot of that is on the agents. This came across as your basic gauntlet/rumble style match that went long for the sake of going long. Even worse than that was the fact that it felt very long.

Order of Entry: Kong, Kim, Jessie, Robbie E, Spud, EC3, Gunner, Edwards, Richards, Storm, Dutt, Steve, Koya, Bram, Lashley, Young.

Order of Elimination: Kim, Spud, Kong, Dutt, Gunner, Robbie E, Jessie, Koya, Steve, Bram, Storm, Richards, Edwards, Young and EC3.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Not So Good
The 411
Without Taz, the commentary was much better. Sure Mathews got silly at times, but it was jokes about what was happening and was playful instead of the spiteful shit Taz tends to put out there that just takes away from the shows. I wanted to mention this because Taz’s commentary has been a negative for these shows, and they improved it here.

Overall this was a below average show, and for $15 I cannot recommend it when you can get just as good (and in the case of last week) even better shows with Impact on Friday nights. Track down the Wolves vs. Roode & Aries if you get the chance, but this one is a show to save your cash on.
