Csonka’s WWE 205 Live Review 5.02.17

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– TJP defeated Lince Dorado @ 7:10 via submission [**]
– Drew Gulak defeated Mustafa Ali @ 5:06 via pin [**½]
– Noam Dar defeated Rich Swann @ 13:20 via pin []

– We start with footage of Owens beating down Jericho post Smackdown.

– We get footage of Neville playing mind games with Perkins, and their assault on Aries from Raw.

Lince Dorado vs. TJP: They do some fast paced back and forth, and ending in a stand off. Dorado then takes control and dances before hitting a RANA. TJP to the floor, but Dorado hits a superkick and moonsault to the floor. Back in and Dorado slams TJP to the corner, but TJP cuts him off and then slams him to the buckles and lays the boots to him. TJP chokes him out in the ropes, and the slingshot senton follows sand he then dabs and covers for 1. TJP then stomps on his face, sets Dorado up top and rips at his mask. Dorado fights him off, and hits a really awkward moonsault press, which looks as if it was supposed to be a double stomp but it didn’t look good. Dorado hits an enziguri and hits the high cross for 2. TJP counters the cutter, lays in the strikes but Dorado catches him with a kick and covers for 2. Dorado up top, TJP stops that and follows him up. They battle, Dorado shoves him off and hits a sunset flip, but TJP rips away at the mask to escape and lock in the knee bar for the win. TJP defeated Lince Dorado @ 7:10 via submission [**] Pretty rough match at times, but I loved TJP’s heel antics.

– Corey Graves interviews Kendrick about his issues with Tozawa. Kendrick says he feels insulted, they had a relationship in Japan, and he just wanted to be Tozawa’s mentor. But Tozawa thinks he knows better, just like all of these young guys. So that’s why he started to teach him lessons, whether he wanted them or not. Kendrick says Tozawa feels in love with the WWE Universe, but he feels Tozawa lacks focus. Kendrick says he is done playing and Tozawa runs in and KICKS HIS FUCKING FACE OFF. Tozawa says the next lesson is to always end an interview with an impact.

Mustafa Ali vs. Drew Gulak: Gulak is out with his no fly zone protest sign, and claims he will make an example out of Ali. Gulak immediately takes it to the mat, looking to prove his point and outwrestle the young highflier. Ali escapes, but Gulak just lays the boots to him and talks trash to him before whipping him to the buckles. Ali picks up the pace, hits a RANA and then heads up top and Gulak heads to the apron. They then trade strikes, Ali looks for some flippity doo counters, but Gulak decapitates him with a lariat. Gulak then locks in a camel clutch variation, continuing to ground Ali. Ali escapes with strikes, starts to pick up some momentum and follows with the dropkick. Ali then hits the head kick, the rolling neck breaker follows and he heads up top. Gulak grabs at his foot to stop him, pulls him back down and Ali lays him out with a strike; Ali up top and the frog splash hits knees, and Gulak rolls him up for the win. Drew Gulak defeated Mustafa Ali @ 5:06 via pin [**½] An improvement over the opener, playing into the angle very well, and the match was simply cleaner and more streamlined.

– Post match, Gulak says that this was vindication for his campaign, because high flying doesn’t work. He blames the fans for encouraging Ali, his way works and he proved why he is the future of 205 Live.

– We get a video package on the relationship that was between Dar & Fox.

Noam Dar vs. Rich Swann: Swann took control right away, grounding Dar with a side headlock. Dar picked the leg and looked for a knee bar, but Swann countered and then went back to the side headlock. I love watching super fun & charismatic highflier Rich Swann do average grappling. Swann keeps staying a step ahead of Dar, hitting a dropkick and then back to the side headlock. Dar finally escapes, crotching Swann on the ropes and following with a clothesline, sending Swann to the floor. Dar then takes control on the floor, rolls Swann back in and then lays in some strikes. Dar then attacks the back with kicks and uppercuts before sending him to the buckles. Swann tries to fire back with chops, but Dar attacks the knee and then follows with a butterfly suplex for 2. Dar then realizes that things almost got exciting, so he went to the side headlock. Dar slowly worked some strikes, but missed the running kick, allowing Swann to fire up with clotheslines and rights. Swann to the apron and Dar trips him up with a kick to the knee. Dar to the floor, they brawl back and forth, Dar attacks the arm and they both roll back in. Swann tosses Dar back to the floor and wipes him out with a dive. Swann then sets Dar on the barricade and in shades of RVD hits a leg drop on Dar. Back in the ring, Swann heads up top, Phoenix splash hits, but Dar kicks out as Swann was slow to cover due to selling the arm, which was appreciated. Dar then attacks the arm in the ropes, but walks into a head kick; Swann rolls him up for 2. Dar catches Swann out of the air and works the arm bar, but Swann fights and makes the ropes. Dar back to the arm, but Swann avoids, hits another head kick and heads up top. Dar kicks out the leg and then lays the boots to Swann, focusing on the arm. Dar then hits the running kick to the face and picks up the win. Noam Dar defeated Rich Swann @ 13:20 via pin [*½] This wasn’t so much a bad match, the work was rather clean and the ideas were sound. Unfortunately this was extremely boring and was very difficult to get into.

– Alicia Fox then arrives and she reunited with Dar because he actually won a match.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

This week’s episode of 205 live felt extremely lifeless, TJP was fun in his match and the Gulak vs. Ali program has some promise, but other than that, this was a completely skippable episode.
