Csonka’s WWE Main Event Review 10.07.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Naomi defeated Natalya @ 3:41 via pin [**]
Non-Title Match: Champions Rhyno and Heath Slater defeated The Ascension @ 7:50 via pin [**¾]

– Tom Stupid Idiot Phillips and Corey Graves are on commentary.

Naomi vs. Natalya: This has been one of the three women’s feuds established on Smackdown, behind Carmella and Nikki and the title feud between Lynch and Bliss. Both of those feuds have gotten the majority of the TV time and will be featured at No Mercy, so this is a way to give these two some time. Natalya tried to use her power early, but Naomi hit the speedball kicks and the sunset flip for 2. Natalya begged off after that, which was A TRAP, pulling Naomi throat first to the ropes and then working the abdominal stretch. Natalya bullied Naomi around and talked a lot of trash until Naomi hit the desperation drop kick. Natalya cut Naomi off and tried to ground her, but Naomi fired up and hit the Thesz press and strikes. Natalya fought back, went for the basement dropkick but Naomi swept the leg and pinned her. No that can’t be right, let me rewind that. She swept the leg and then pinned her. Well shit, that was the finish. Naomi defeated Natalya @ 3:41 via pin [**] Outside of the finish, they did well for the lack of time given. I don’t mind a flash pin, but that felt really weak.

– We go back to Raw, specifically the opening segment where Reigns and Rusev brawled to set up their HIAC match at the Hell in a Cell PPV. They showed almost the entire segment. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– We again went back to Raw, and the New Day vs. JeriKo tag match, with Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson on commentary. Again they showed almost all of this. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

Champions Rhyno and Heath Slater vs. The Ascension: Rhyno and Slater previously beat the Ascension on the night that Slater signed his Smackdown contract. Konnor tossed around Slater and dropped him with the shoulder block. Rhyno tagged in and they traded chops and Rhyno dropped him with the shoulder block. He and Slater worked double teams and then cleared the ring. Post break, Slater was fighting off both men and then got sent to the post. The Ascension worked the heat, abusing poor Slater with double teams and cheap shots. This wasn’t anything special, but completely solid big man work and solid double teams hat worked and it never got too slow. Slater kept getting hope spots, and kept getting cut off until he hit then neck breaker and got the tag to Rhyno. Rhyno ran wild, got a near fall and then it broke down. Rhyno ended Viktor’s night with the gore and the champions win again. Champions Rhyno and Heath Slater defeated The Ascension @ 7:50 via pin [**¾] The Rhyno and Heath Slater tag matches are extremely formulaic; Slater gets some shine, they work the heat on him, Rhyno makes the save and they win. That’s not a bad thing, because the crowd loves rooting for Slater, he sells the beating well and Rhyno makes for a great hot tag. They’re just a fun team.

– We go back to Raw one more time, and look at the Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks main event. They showed a lot of match, 75% or so at least. I felt that this was an excellent main event, playing extremely well off of their past encounters and delivering in the main event spot. This was on par with their previous Raw match where Banks also won the title, and worlds better than their Summerslam match. I also LOVED that winning meant everything to Banks, while losing left Charlotte devastated. The ladies delivered, and with the brand extension, there is no reason why they shouldn’t get more chances to do so going forward. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

Much like Superstars this week, this was a good episode, fueled by airing most of the Charlotte vs. Sasha match from Raw. I just hate that Main Event shows no highlights from Smackdown, because that show has been great and there is so much good stuff from the show or Talking Smack that could be utilized here.
