Csonka’s WWE Main Event Review 10.21.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Zack Ryder defeated Tyler Breeze @ 4:05 via pin [**½]
– American Alpha defeated The Ascension @ 9:25 via pin [**¾]

– Tom Stupid Idiot Phillips, David Otunga and Aiden English are on commentary.

Zack Ryder vs. Tyler Breeze: Mojo and Fandango are in their partner’s corners. We got a nice back and forth to begin, with Ryder hitting a dropkick and sending Breeze to the floor. He then hit the dropkick through the ropes, but Fandango distracted Ryder and that allowed Breeze to take the heat. Good work from Breeze here, grounding Ryder, but also keeping things moving so that it didn’t feel slow. Ryder would get hope spots and then finally hit the flapjack. Ryder then made the comeback with a clothesline and then a dropkick off the second rope. A corner splash followed, and then the broski boot. Breeze escaped the rough Ryder, Fandango tried to get involved and Mojo chased him away. Breeze scored with a roll up for 2, but then Ryder hit the rough Ryder for the win. Zack Ryder defeated Tyler Breeze @ 4:05 via pin [**½] That was a perfectly solid match, with both guys using the time well. Commentary did a nice job putting over Smackdown’s tag team division and the big Survivor Series tag match that’s coming up.

– We get highlights from Rollins vs. Jericho from Raw. They again had a very good match, just seem to work well together and have chemistry. I’d love to see them get this time on a PPV where they can go full tilt. The big thing was that Jericho wanted to do this on his own, and Owens was the cause of the walls being broken up and leading to his loss. They are doing well establishing the Jericho and Owens dynamic, and the booking makes sense for a split, but they aren’t beating you over the head with it. Rollins also gets a win to keep his momentum going. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– We then got highlights from the segment where Rusev introduced his family on Raw. I think that Reigns’ tone was off (the writing of his material), as there was too much joking between two guys that are about to step into HIAC. The beat down was solid as Rusev needed to get the upper hand and look dominant as the challenger, but it also feels repetitive. I have seen this before and they aren’t doing anything new make me care about the feud. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

Chad Gable and Jason Jordan vs. Konnor and Viktor: Gable quickly took Viktor to the mat, where they went back and forth. Viktor tried to work the arm, Gable escaped and took him back down and he worked the arm. Jordan tagged in and slammed Viktor, and grounded him with a chinlock. Gable tagged back in, hit the high cross and northern lights suplex for a near fall. Alpha then cleared Konnor out, Gable worked the hanging arm bar in the ropes but then Konnor got involved and took the heat on Gable as they worked through a break. Post break, they beat on Gable, covering him with the apron skirt and kicking him in the head. Konnor worked a series of rolling side headlocks, trying to keep Gable grounded. The Ascension worked quick tags, keeping Gable isolated in their corner. They worked a solid heat, with some solid aggression but the crowd isn’t into it very much. Gable avoided a charge and then got the tag. Hot tag Jordan hits the ring and cleans house, dropkicks and knee lifts follow. STRAPS ARE DOWN and Jordan hits an Alphaplex for a near fall as Konnor makes the save. It breaks down. The Ascension hit the fall of man, but Gable makes the save. Gable takes out Konnor, overhead belly to belly on Viktor and then grand amplitude connects and Alpha wins. American Alpha defeated The Ascension @ 9:25 via pin [**¾] That was a pretty good tag match overall, with better work than the opener, but lacking in crowd reaction. The Ascension needs more viciousness to their heat segments; they have some intensity but it then falls into mediocrity quickly. Still, this was enjoyable.

– We closed with footage of Goldberg’s return to Raw. It was a hell of a promo in front of an insane atmosphere. In all sincerity, that was the best promo Goldberg ever cut and between the promo and crowd response, he felt like a mega star. More importantly, it felt real and had great intensity. It was a hell of a segment to close the show, and if he can bring half of that intensity to the match, it may actually deliver something of quality. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

Between the solid wrestling, focusing on Smackdown’s tag team division, and the clips from Raw, this was a good show this week. I’m still annoyed that the Smackdown “B Show” doesn’t show Smackdown highlights, but I am sure that Vince doesn’t care about that.
