Csonka’s WWE Superstars Review 10.28.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Neville defeated Titus O’Neil @ 4:37 via pin []
– Sin Cara, Cedric Alexander and Lince Dorado defeated Drew Gulak, Tony Nese and Ariya Daivari @ 8:09 via pin [**¾]

Neville vs. Titus O’Neil: O’Neil took Neville to the corner and laid in some strikes. Neville tried to use his speed, started to hit and move and laid in some kicks. O’Neil took a powder, leading to Neville scoring with a nice dive. Back in the ring, a standing shooting star press got 2 for Neville. O’Neil then cut him off with a big boot and beat him down in the corner. O’Neil slammed Neville to the mat, and then grounded Neville with the chinlock. Neville fought to his feet, but was then taken out with a clothesline, O’Neil covered for 2. O’Neil then connected with the corner splash, and then mocked the crowd for cheering Neville on. He then dragged Neville across the ring, but Neville cut him off with boots to the face. Neville up top, red arrow, RVD sell, finish. Neville defeated Titus O’Neil @ 4:37 via pin [*½] I’ll give Titus credit; it takes a truly talented performer to make Neville boring. This felt odd, Neville got the shine, Titus worked a bland heat and then Neville gets the boots up and hits his finish. No comeback, no chance for the crowd to get engaged for the face, just a finish. Neville continues to live in obscurity, if only there were a group of hungry, young, and athletic guys his size he could work with.

– We go back and see footage from the Paul Heyman and Brock Lesnar segment from Raw. Like I said on Monday, this accomplished nothing, was a waste of money and time. They sent Heyman out there to pull some strings and have people chant while they literally said nothing of use to build this program. For as great as last week’s Goldberg promo was, this was the exact opposite in quality. This was shit. They tried to get heat on Lesnar in his home state, and it didn’t work because creative is largely tone deaf. It was actually worse on the second viewing. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– We then go back to see the Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte contract signing segment. I do not think that the segment came off all that well in terms of setting the stage and getting the ladies over for stepping into the match. There was emotion for sure, Foley discussing his issues was powerful, Charlotte was a great arrogant heel, but I felt that there were issues. Foley should have been forced into making this a HIAC match, instead he booked it to make history. And then for weeks he was completely nonchalant about things, constantly talking history, letting the ladies talk about history and never discussing the dangers of the match. And now that the match was announced and we had time to marinate on it, then he gets his crisis of conscience in regards to the women fighting in the cell. The other issue is that by the end of this, the crowd was more into Foley’s emotional tale of the cell destroying him, which really took away the focus from the ladies. There is a reason that many asked for a conflicted Foley hyping the dangers for weeks prior to finally relenting to the match. Instead he made it, we got the history making narrative, and then Foley gets super emotional and it takes away from the final segment for the ladies. And while I do not want the ladies to be instantly afraid about the match, I also felt that their attitudes were a bit too care free. Charlotte constantly smiling and wanting to cut off Foley for example; there should have been some hesitation, leading to Charlotte mocking Sasha, then getting fired up and then signing the contract out of hate. Go back and watch Triple H’s reactions to the reveal of Cactus Jack and then later the fact that they go to Hell in a Cell; the Game, the Cerebral Assassin, is pissing his pants. I don’t care how arrogant a heel you are, you have to sell the stipulation. The overall tone and way the story was told felt off to me, it’s like they forgot what they had written and what Foley had announced, realized that he needed to get serious and then threw it out there, which led to it all being more about him than the ladies involved in the actual match. I don’t think the segment was bad, just not properly focused. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

Sin Cara, Cedric Alexander and Lince Dorado defeated Drew Gulak, Tony Nese and Ariya Daivari: We got handshakes and then we were underway. Nese and Cara to begin, Cara tried to ground Nese, but Nese fought back, they did some passes and Cara took the advantage. Dorado tagged in, hit a double stomp to the arm and then Alexander tagged in. The faces then worked quick tags, Cara back in and Nese countered the tornado DDT into a dump suplex, which he struggled with. Gulak and Daivari then double teamed Cara, but Cara hit a double arm drag and tagged din Dorado. He hit a high cross, and then a RANA on Gulak. Chops followed, Gulak fired up but ran into a spin kick and Dorado covered for 2. Daivari then distracted Dorado, and Gulak sent him to the floor and we took a commercial break. Post break the heels kept the heat on Dorado, with Daivari in control. Dorado tried a head scissors, but got slammed to the mat, the knee strike got Daivari a cover for 2. Gulak grounded Dorado for a bit, tagged in Nese and he hit a series of strikes and kicks, which got 2. Nese took out Cara, but that allowed Dorado to hit a dropkick and tag in Alexander. Alexander ran wild, hitting the back handspring kick. He’s very good. He then hit a springboard clothesline to Daivari, and Gulak made the save. It broke down as Dorado sent Gulak to the floor and Cara tosses Nese. Dorado went for a high cross to the floor, they caught him, but Cara wiped out the pile with a suicide dive. Back in the ring, Alexander hit the lumbar check on Daivari for the win. Sin Cara, Cedric Alexander and Lince Dorado defeated Drew Gulak, Tony Nese and Ariya Daivari @ 8:09 via pin [**¾] That was a fun tag overall, with an energetic closing stretch. I still think that they need to allow the Cruiserweight to go a bit more full throttle, but this was fun. These guys will rematch on the Hell in a Cell kick off show.

– Finally, we take a look back at Raw’s triple threat main event and after math. This was fine overall when it comes to the work, but it felt repetitive towards the end the fact that Rollins pinned BOTH guys was horrible booking. This was the perfect time for then to work 3 to 4 minutes, and then have Jericho and Owens beat the hell out of Rollins for the DQ, and then do the apron bomb spot to set the stage for Rollins as the injured underdog. The post match was the best part, by a mile. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– End scene.

I liked Main Event a bit better this week, but this was another solid show.
