Beyond Wrestling: Americanrana 2013
7-21-13
Providence, RI

Your host is Denver Colorado.

This is my first time watching a Beyond Wrestling show. I have heard about the early shows where they put on matches by wrestlers for wrestlers and have now become one of the hottest independent promotions in the Northeast, so I figured I check out the show that put them on the mat.

Elimination Match-David Starr (0) vs. Latin Dragon (0) vs. Sozio (0) vs. Shane Strickland (0)
Fans are actually entering the building right when the match gets underway, continuing the underground theme of the promotion even in their biggest event to date. Spin kick by Dickenson but Gulak comes back with the rolling elbow for 3!!!
Winner- Drew Gulak **** (Wow, this was awesome. Gulak, along with Chris Hero, Timothy Thatcher, and Biff Busick have done a terrific job putting an emphasis on more submission/shoot style wrestling on the indies and this match also gave me a new appreciation for Dickenson in terms of being part of the group I just listed. This was just a battle with both guys trying to wear down the other with different verities of holds and limb work before throwing bombs to try and get that knockout blow. Props to both guys for not holding back and I was blown away by how good this ended up being. )

Da Hoodz (Kris Pyro and Davey Cash) (0) vs. EYFBO (Angel Ortiz and Mike Draztik) (-1) vs. M1nute Men (Tommy Trainwreck and Devin Blaze) (+2) vs. Team Tremendous (Dan Berry (+7) and Bill Carr (-2))

Winners- Team Tremendous ***1/4 (I liked the placement of this match where it was a cool down from the war that Dickenson and Gulak had but this had its moments of pure insanity. Team Tremdous is such an entertaining act, they brought goofy yet incredibly fun comedy to the early portion to the match before you went into 100 moves a minute mode the rest of the match, which is always a joy to watch. This was a blast and I want to watch these teams in regular two on two contests to get a feel of how good they really are. )

Aaron Epic (+8) vs. Tabarnak de Team (Mathieu St. Jacques and Thomas Dubois) (0)
Sugar Dunkerton is Epic’s partner but he did not make it to the show, so Epic comes out solo. Epic attacks at the bell but he gets double teamed easily by de Team. Double suplex by de Team and Dave Cole pulls Epic out of the ring. Cole joins Epic and it looks like Epic has a partner. Basement forearm by St. Jacques to Epic and Dubois hits a Buckle Bomb. Cole goes for a missile dropkick but gets caught and they powerbomb Cole into Epic. Double Alabama Slam to Epic gets 3.
Winners- Tabarnak de Team **1/4 (This match didn’t do much for me. Tabarnak de Team didn’t make a major impact in their debut, as their offense was uninteresting and the crowd preferred to sing patriotic songs than get into their attack. Epic and Cole also didn’t really click as a last second team, so this was the weakest effort on the show so far.)

Colt Cabana (0) vs. JAKA (+8)
JAKA’s feet gross Cabana out early so he takes JAKA down and makes Bryce Remsberg smell JAKA’s foot. JAKA rakes the back of Cabana and Cabana catches JAKA with a full body roll-up for 2. Neck breaker by JAKA and he hits a rolling dropping head butt for 2. JAKA chokes Cabana with his foot in the corner and he rakes the face of Cabana. Head butts by JAKA gets 2 and he grabs a nerve hold. Cabana fights oput so JAKA hits an overhead belly to belly suplex for 2. Cabana fires back but a head butt does more damage to himself than it did to JAKA. JAKA fires away in the corner and Cabana fires back with some jabs into the bionic elbow. Bionic elbow to the back of the head by Cabana and he hits the Flying Apple. Lariat by Cabana gets 2. Face buster followed by a superkick by JAKA gets 2. JAKA goes up and misses a flying splash. Big splash by Cabana gets 2. Sunset flip by Cabana gets 2. Jumanji Bomb by JAKA gets 2. JAKA fires away but Cabana catches him with the GTS for 3!!!
Winner- Colt Cabana **3/4 (A lot of goofiness and comedy early but as the match progressed they put on a nice little contest. As a whole, I thought this was a nice entertaining bout and was different from anything else we have seen on the show so far.)

Kevin Steen (0) vs. MASADA (0)
MASADSA targets the arm of Steen but Steen keeps going to the ropes to prevent MASADA from gaining an advantage. They trade forearms and MASADA hits a knee to the midsection. PILEDRIVER WITH THE SKEWERS IN STEEN’S HEAD!!!!! Masada covers for 2!!! Steen kicks the leg of MASADA and delivers the Cannonball on the injured leg!!! Sharpshooter by Steen and MASADA taps!!!
Winner- Kevin Steen ***1/2 (MASADA was coming into the match with a bad knee, so they smartly put the focus of the match on the injured knee and MASADA had the rare task of working as a sympathetic figure. This match was an absolutely blast, with a great mix of brawling, psychology, and just pure insanity. Props to MASADA for working injured and this was another great effort from Steen. )

Best of New England Challenge Series-Johnny Gargano (-2) vs. JT Dunn (+3)
Feeling out process to start and we reach a stalemate. Gargano draws Dunn in on the handshake and Dunn cleans house to come back. He dropkicks Gargano to the apron and he hits a big boot to knock him off. Suicide dive to the floor by Dunn and he looks to dive again but Gargano blocks with the Slingshot Spear for 2. Dropkick to the back by Gargano gets 2. Gargano bends Dunn in the ropes and Dunn fires back. Springboard clothesline back in misses and Gargano hits a suplex for 2. Gargano bends the arm of Dunn and he grabs the Cloverleaf on Dunn. Dunn refuses to quit, so Gargano releases and Dunnb begins to fight back. Hurt’s Donut by Gargano gets 2 so Gargano grabs the Gargano Escape. Dunn taps!!!
Winner- Johnny Gargano ***1/2 (Another really good match. I loved Gargano brought his cocky erogant character he was developing in DGUSA at the time to the match, as it helped get the crowd behind Dunn big time for the final stretch. The match was solid but once they hit Dunn’s comeback it was outstanding, with great counter sequences and you thought Dunn was going to pull it out against one of the best in wrestling.)

Best of New England Challenge Series- Anthony Stone (+4) vs. AR Fox (-5)
Feeling out process and Stone lands some arm drags on Fox. Spinning enzuigir by Fox and Stone drives Fox into the turnbuckle to come back. Fox snaps Stone’s neck off the ropes to bring him to the floor and Fox misses the kick flip on the floor. Head scissors off the apron to the floor by Stone. Back in, Dunn dropkicks Fox in the corner and Fox comes back with a springboard Codebreaker for 2. Back breaker by Fox and he hits a split legged moonsault for 2. Dropkick by Fox and he puts Stone in the tree of woe. Bronco Buster by Fox and he dumps Stone to the floor. Summersault plancha to the floor by Fox!!! Fox looks to dive again but he avoids an enzuigiri attempt and he dropkicks Stone. Fox goes up and hits the leg drop onto the apron on Stone. Back in, Fox covers for 2. Abdominal stretch by Fox but Stone fights out. Enzuigiri by Fox gets 2. They both do some flippy stuff with nothing connecting and Stone finally catches Fox with the Arabian Press to the floor!!!! Flying knee strike by Stone gets 2. Kicks to the chest by Stone and he puts Fox on top. Fox fights him off and connects with the springboard ace crusher. Fox goes up and hits the 450 splash for 2. Shooting Star Cannonball misses and Stone goes up. Double stomp misses and Stone blocks a sunset flip for 3!!!
Winner- Anthony Stone *** ( I was enjoying the match when Fox was on offense but then they had their weird sequence leading to the dive to the floor by Stone and the match well apart. Things were clunky and awkward and while I appreciate the athleticism they showcased, this lacked a natural flow and I think at times they didn’t really know where they wanted to go with the match. It wasn’t a disaster but it didn’t hit the potential that the match really had.)

After the match, Nicholas Kaye comes out but takes off his sling. He chokes Stone out with a rag of either and he declares he wants Stone on September 15th.

Best of New England Challenge Series- Biff Busick (-8) vs. Eddie Edwards (-1)
They grapple for a bit and neither man can gain the early advantage. Test of strength and Edwards ends up winning that battle and begins to work the arm of Busick. They trade roll-ups for some nears falls and we reach another stalemate. They trade chops and Edwards maintains control with the side head lock. Edwards drop toe holds Busick and he grabs the Mexican Surfboard. Back elbows by Busick and he charges in the corner but misses and crashes all the way to the floor. Edwards slams Busick onto the apron and they brawl on the floor. Edwards goes for a chop but misses and he nails a support beam!!!! Super kick by Busick and they brawl on the apron. Busick and Edwards trade slaps and Busick hits a release Dragon suplex. Lariats and a super kick by Edwards but Busick KILLS Edwards with a lariat of his own!!! Half and half suplex by Busick gets 2. Busick puts Edwards on top and follows up. Edwards fights Busick off and hits a double stomp to the back. Two powerbombs by Edwards gets 2 and he grabs the Achilles Lock. Edwards stomps the head of Busick while in the hold and Busick gets knocked out!!!
Winner- Eddie Edwards ***3/4 (Excellent main event to cap off the show. Busick took one hell of a beating here and got a star making performance as a result. Edwards helped Busick look like a million bucks and just laid into Busick but Busick was game to return the favor. My only complaint is that I feel this may have been too one sided for Edwards and I think Busick should have controlled a small stretch of the match rather than have those flash moments where he connects with Edwards. But otherwise, this is a pretty kick ass match. )

The 411
This was my first time watching Beyond Wrestling and I was blown away by what I saw. Their new venue, Fete Music, was awesome as allowed for a packed house while also giving the show the same underground and intamite setting the company was built on. The wrestling on this show across the board was really good. They had a great variety of styles on the show so they gave the fans a little bit of everything. The bigger names they brought in (Steen,Edwards,Gargano) all worked their asses off and I was impressed by the local talents as well. It's no surprise that the standouts on this show (JT Dunn, Team Tremedous) have become cornerstones for the promotion in 2015. There's only one match that felt like a waste, otherwise everything else on the show was enjoyable and you had two excellent matches in Gulak/Dickenson and Busick/Edwards. This is a great start for someone looking to get into Beyond Wrestling and I'm looking forward to checking out more of their shows.
