Gawker Editor AJ Daulerio On Hook For Money Owed To Hulk Hogan

August 13, 2016 | Posted by Joseph Lee

PWInsider reports that former Gawker editor AJ Daulerio is now in charge of paying Hulk Hogan the money that’s owed to him after he won a lawsuit against the website. It was ruled late Thursday that Hogan will now be in control of Daulerio’s assets. The editor appeared in court to explain why should not be held accountable for what was ruled he owed Hogan. Daulerio is currently $27,000 in debt beyond what Hogan is owed. Both Gawker owner Nick Denton and the website itself have filed for bankruptcy. Daulerio is now expected to pay $115.1 million in damages to Hogan along with $100,000 in punitive damages.

Daulerio testified on August 10 that he had less than $2,000 in a checking account and some scattered personal possessions. Other than that, he had nothing except ownership points in online entities. He was unemployed and living off of his checking account, according to a Forbes story posted before the corut ruling. Daulerio’s bank account was frozen due to a court order. It’s believed that the only way to get out of debt may be for him to file for personal bankruptcy.

When Gawker filed, their lawyers had been representing Daulerio. It’s possible that when Gawker field, their creditors (including Hogan) may have suggested that money not be spent to represent him anymore. He stated that he is currently seeking counsel but his financial situation has made it almost impossible.

Now that Hogan has control of his assets, he would also have the rights to whatever protection Daulerio had as a journalist contracted by Gawker, including the company covering legal judgments against him. Daulerio said in his filing that Gawker is no longer legally representing him, he can’t ask them for advice about his current protection. Hogan is hoping to use that “indemnification clause” as a way to get the money he’s owed. Daulerio wrote the recap for the Hogan sex tape with Heather clem, which Hogan wasn’t aware was filmed.
