PROGRESS Wrestling held the second day of the Super Strong Style 16 Tournament on May 28th at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London, featuring the quarter finals of the tournament and the final of the Natural Progression Series to crown the first PROGRESS Women’s Champion.

1: “Flash” Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews defeated The London Riots (James Davis & Rob Lynch) – a fun, good natured match to get the fans into the action on Day 2. Andrews and Webster used their pace and the Riots used power for each advantage. The end came when Lynch went shoulder first into the ringpost, leaving Davis open for Webster’s version of Destino and an Andrews Shooting Star Press for the win. Davis didn’t initially check on his partner, but eventually went back to help Lynch to the back.

2: Tyler Bate defeated Mark Haskins in the Quarter Final – a really good match, with each man coming close on several occasions to defeating the other following superb striking. As Haskins was about to win, PROGRESS Champion Pete Dunne ran out and pulled the referee out of the ring, only to be chased to the back by Jimmy Havoc. This distracted Haskins, allowing Trent Seven to run in and hit him with a twisting Piledriver to hand Bate the win.

3: Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Jack Sexsmith in the Quarter Final – Sexsmith revealed that he had torn a bicep in his first round match with Zack Gibson, but was determined to wrestle anyway. Sexsmith tried valiantly to fight against Sabre Jr. the best that he could with his limitations, but Sabre Jr. submitted him quickly and humanely with a single leg crab.

4: Matt Riddle defeated Jeff Cobb in the Quarter Final – this was one of the best matches in PROGRESS history, as the Chosen Bros threw each other with reckless abandon all over the ring. Cobb handled Riddle with ease, even switching suplex positions with him in mid-grasp, and the sheer power on display was mind-blowing. Riddle hit the Bro to Sleep, the Jumping Tombstone and his Fisherman Buster, but they all failed to put Cobb away before a jumping knee strike finally did the trick. This is the must watch match of the tournament, and in general when the show is released on Demand PROGRESS. Riddle meets Tyler Bate in tomorrow’s semi final.

5: Travis Banks defeated Flamita in the Quarter Final – a good mix of Lucha Libre and strong style wrestling, as Banks attempted to stifle Flamita’s high-flying tactics. Both men hit big topes on each other, and the tide turned when Flamita missed a 450 attempt, allowing Banks to submit him with the Lion Clutch (similar to the Gargano Escape). Banks takes on Zack Sabre Jr. in the semi finals tomorrow.

6: British Strong Style (Pete Dunne & Trent Seven) defeated David Starr & “Pastor” William Eaver – Dunne came out with both the PROGRESS World Championship and the WWE United Kingdom Championship, tossing aside the PROGRESS Title Tetsuya Naito style. The fans heckled Seven massively for losing in 6 seconds to Matt Riddle yesterday, with one side holding up signs with “6” written on them. The match was played largely to comedy until Dunne was tagged in. Eaver and Starr were winning on Seven, when Dunne bailed him out, hitting a Pedigree on Starr before Seven blind tagged in to win with the twisting Piledriver. Very good match with good showings from both Eaver and Starr in particular.

7: Toni Storm defeated Jinny and Laura Di Matteo in the Natural Progression Series IV Final to win the new PROGRESS Women’s Championship – a great three way brawl fought largely outside the ring, with Di Matteo and Storm both hitting dives. Di Matteo sent both Jinny and Storm through ringside chairs, and the pivotal point came when all three women brawled onto the stage, where Storm hit Jinny with the Strong Zero Piledriver, only for Di Matteo to give Storm a DDT. Jinny broke up Di Matteo’s Octopus submission on Storm, and took Di Matteo out, but Storm hit Jinny with another Strong Zero to win the Natural Progression Series and become the first PROGRESS Women’s Champion to an amazing reaction. Storm is now a dual champion, also holding the SWA World Championship in the STARDOM promotion in Japan.

The semi final lineup for the final day tomorrow (May 29th) is as follows, with the winners meeting in the final in the Super Strong Style 16 Tournament main event:
