PureWrestlingInstinct: Pentagon Jr. Shall Reign Supreme

May 29, 2016 | Posted by Dino Zee

Before we go any further this week, I have a simple request: no spoilers. Whenever I talk about Lucha Underground, I know there’s a risk that someone who either a) read the results or b) attended the tapings is going to come in and tell everyone what’s happened. For the record, I don’t read the spoilers, simply because, with Lucha Underground, I will be watching, so there’s no need to see if it’s worth my time or not.

So, once again, just a simple request: I’m making a prediction in here, and I don’t need anyone letting me know if I’m actually right or wrong. No spoilers. Please. From the writer that doesn’t go out of his way to troll you guys? Thanks.

It is my opinion that when Season 2 of LU comes to a conclusion, we’re going to have a new Heavyweight Champion. On top of that, my call is that it’s going to Pentagon Jr, freshly returned, and ready to make an example of Matanza.

It was roughly two months ago that Matanza, defending his championship, would destroy Pentagon. Matanza’s debut was amazing enough, as he ran through everyone in the ring during Aztec Warfare 2, winning the belt. But one guy wasn’t afraid, and it was our favorite skeleton ninja who possesses, according to estimates, roughly zero fear.

Pentagon was furious at being kept out of Aztec Warfare in the first place, and after attacking Dario Cueto, he would receive his title shot. Sadly, he couldn’t see what the rest of us could: he was greatly overmatched, and unprepared to face this new force. He tried his usual bag of tricks, only to watch Matanza shake it all off, and unleash a vicious wave of destruction on him.

When the dust had settled, the Temple Faithful were left in shock as the monster Matanza had eradicated Pentagon in a way not only not seen, but not thought possible. It was official: we had our new dominant figure.

With Pentagon out, Matanza would look to settle things with the former champion, Mil Muertes. They first collided in a normal match that, if I’m being frank, sort of fell short of expectations, at least in the sheer brutality that some (myself included) felt would be easily forthcoming. The lack of a real finish, while somewhat annoying to the purist in me, also left the door open for a rematch, and boy, did the two deliver the second time around.

It was the conclusion of this match, and the events shortly afterwards, that led me to my initial conclusion that Pentagon would reign supreme when season two came to an end.

With Mil Muertes once again locked in the casket, we would see King Cuerno emerge, ready to collect another trophy. Muertes and Cuerno had an uneasy relationship for the season, with Cuerno apparently hired to win the Gift of the Gods title from Fenix, with the understanding that he would not cash it in on Muertes. Unfortunately, he had different plans, but a loss to Fenix would cost him the title anyways. Still, the damage was done, and Catrina and Mil Muertes were looking to get retribution on Cuerno for his attempted double cross.

To see Cuerno loom over the casket was the right message: you guys lost, I’m the hunter, and I’ve got my prize.

That in mind, and with the recent vignette that saw Cuerno talking to Muertes as he slumbered still in the casket, makes me think that while he’d still like to regain the Lucha Underground championship at some point, Muertes is going to wake up and break out of the casket. When he does, the odds are good that he will strive to turn the hunter into the hunted.

But what about Pentagon? Even if Mil Muertes is spoken for should he return, how does that bring Pentagon back into the equation?

As we’ve seen, Pentagon has been going through some more, uh, therapy with Vampiro. With Pentagon unable to stand, Vampiro has used the ancient art of Candle Wax to the Mask to help him regain his strength, and to hopefully tap into a side even more evil than before. If I may delve deeper into geekiness, he’s basically trying to get Pentagon to reach his Super Saiyan 3 level before returning, it would appear.

And so that brings us to where we are now. Matanza has no clear challenger. The rest of the top guys appear to be preoccupied. And if there’s anyone crazy enough to come running back into the Temple at full speed, looking to topple the champion, well, I can’t think of a better candidate for that type of lunacy than Pentagon.

On top of that, I hope that we get another barbaric match, something like the Cero Miedo match from last year’s Ultima Lucha. I want to see both men throw everything they have at the other, and of course in the end, I want to see Pentagon standing supreme over the monster. I want to see fear in Dario Cueto, and pride in Vampiro.

Above all, I want retribution for the events of March 30. Matanza must pay, for no man – even if he thinks he’s a monster – is invincible. And while Matanza has an upcoming date with a Machine this Wednesday night, I have a hunch that Cage is going to come up short in his quest for gold. With wins over Pentagon, Mil Muertes, and then Cage, Matanza has built up quite the list in a short time.

Unfortunately for him, all things good and bad must come to an end. And for his sins, he may not have to deal with the biggest or strongest guy in the Temple, but he is absolutely going to have to deal with the absolute most sinister. Nightmares of package piledrivers and broken arms should haunt Matanza for the time being, because in this case, the known quantity is more terrifying than anything one could conjure up in his head.

Viva Pentagon, sigue viviendo con cero miedo.
