The Name on the Marquee: Smoky Mountain Wrestling (3.14.1992)

-Originally aired March 14, 1992.

-We’re in Knoxville, TN one more time.

-Your hosts are Bob Caudle and Dutch Mantell, with bodyguard Carl Stiles.

HECTOR GUERRERO vs. T.J. TRAVIS
-Hector’s so over that Travis is billed “from Knoxville, Tennessee” and the fans STILL boo him.

-Criss-cross to start and it ends with Hector slamming Travis to the mat. SWEET reversal of an armdrag from Hector. TJ gets frustrated and gives him a hard forearm. He tosses Hector over the top, but Hector skins the cat back in and uses the headscissors to fling Travis out to the floor.

-Surfboard by Guerrero while the commentary team discusses Mr. Ron Wright’s promise that he’ll have a big surprise later in the hour. Travis takes control, but misses a kneedrop from the second rope, and Hector gets an AWFUL-looking moonsault (Travis stood up before he jumped and was way out of position to take the move, and Hector had to find a way to adjust himself in mid-air) so Hector does a jalapeno roll instead to get the three-count.

-Nitro Danny Davis says he’s ready to explode on all the competition!

-The Fantastics have signed the contract for their big six-man tag match against the Koloffs and Jimmy Golden, and they promise a surprise partner.

JIMMY GOLDEN & THE KOLOFFS vs. RENO RIGGINS, ROCKY PATTERSON, & BEN JORDAN
-Patterson gets an early advantage on Vladimir and the jobbers take turns working the arm. Caudle speculates that Golden & The Koloffs thought of this match as “a tune-up for next week” and because of that, they showed up unprepared.

-Golden mows down Riggins, but Riggins bounces right back with a dropkick on Ivan, and the jobbers take control again. Commentary turns super-snarky as Mantell rattles off a list of every wrestler that Caudle has referred to as “quick” and asks if he knows ANY other words to describe pro wrestlers.

-Ben Jordan takes a beating, but he’s got a fighting spirit and throws punches between Vladimir’s moves to stay alive. Golden levels Jordan with a dropkick, and Ivan finishes him off with a sickle.

-The bad guys have words for the Fantastics. They better be here next week!

-We look at Mr. Ron Wright’s confrontation with Commissioner Armstrong.

-Mr. Ron Wright is disappointed that Commissioner Armstrong wasn’t a better man than that. He says that his ringside ban won’t stay in effect for long because he now has a man to manage.

THE DIRTY WHITE BOY (with Mr. Ron Wright) vs. RIKKI NELSON
-Commentary team proclaims this a major surprise and says DWB is a big get for Ron Wright. Dutch Mantell is moved by the idea that Wright can finally get surgery with all the money he’ll make from DWB.

-DWB pounds away on Nelson with clubbering and a headbutt that shows “complete disregard for personal safety.” Powerslam gets two as Ron Wright applauds, pleased with his acquisition. DWB dedicates moves to his manager and respectfully calls him “Mr. Wright.”

-Nelson throws a series of right hands that dazes DWB, but gets Irish whipped and then finished off with a lariat from behind.

-Bob Caudle meets the happy couple after the match, and DWB says that as long as Mr. Ron Wright is happy, he’s happy. He says he’s sickened that not one man in SMW was willing to step up and aid a poor ailing old man. He’s thrilled that he gets the satisfaction of helping a man AND getting access to his deep knowledge.

-Bob Holly wants to make a statement regarding some recent rumors. He denies responsibility for the break-up of Julia Roberts’ relationship and insists that he and Julia are just friends.

KILLER KYLE vs. JERRY LYNN
-Lynn is a hot sensational rookie with a lot of hot moves according to Bob Caudle, but at this point, he’s just a job guy. He ducks a charge and comes off the ropes with an elbow, but Kyle shakes it off and catches him in a Bubbaslam (according to Dutch) or a Rub-Out (according to Bob Caudle) and gets the three count.

-Terry Gordy says he’s in the SMW Heavyweight Title tournament, and nobody can beat him.

-We take a look back at Rip Rogers’ failed attempt at doing squats for an hour.

-Rip Rogers has issued a $5,000 challenge to Tim Horner for a match this week, and Tim Horner accepted.

“White Lightning” TIM HORNER vs. “Hustler” RIP ROGERS
-Rip Rogers is in pink. Horner is in orange and yellow. The ring has yellow ropes with red turnbuckles. If I take my glasses off, it looks like a pack of Starburst is fighting. Dutch Mantell makes a valid point; Rogers still lasted 59:30 in last week’s challenge, so from now on, all he has to do is drag any match to the 20-minute mark or so and he’s pretty much unbeatable.

-Straight mat wrestling early on, but Rogers gets aggressive with a turnbuckle shot and a body rake. He tosses Horner out to the floor, then comes off the top rope with an axehandle. He’s a savage, I tell ya!

-Rogers tries to suplex him off the apron and back onto the floor, but Horner counters it and brings him back inside. He sends Rogers out to the floor and meets him out there with a plancha. The fighting spills back inside and they collide on a double bodypress. Horner recovers and gets the sudden win with a sunset flip.

-Bob Armstrong refuses to allow Jim Cornette a spot in the tag team title tournament without revealing his team. Corny promises to deliver some video footage next week.

Feature match was a bit of a let-down because it ended so abruptly and cleanly. I loved the angle that kickstarted it last week and then it's settled with a single match...feh. But the rest made for a good hour.
