The Name on the Marquee: Smoky Mountain Wrestling (7.4.1992)

-Originally aired July 4, 1992.

-We’re in Cumberland, KY once again, with the BEST CROWD EVER ASSEMBLED INTO A HIGH SCHOOL GYM.

“Mr. Wonderful” PAUL ORNDORFF vs. GARY SCOTT
-Orndorff attacks before the bell, but misses a corner charge, and Young rolls him up for two. Orndorff bounces right back with a suplex and an elbow, then tosses Scott to the floor. He rams Scott into the barricade and there’s one section of the crowd that is solidly pro-Orndorff, and another section that is solidly anti-Orndorff, which makes it fun when the match goes out to the floor and the reaction to each bump changes based on which side of the ring it’s happening on.

-Back in the ring, Orndorff punches and kicks away at Scott in the corner. HIGH backdrop by Orndorff, and he pins Scott with a single knee pressed against the jaw.

-Bob Caudle talks to Jim Cornette and the Heavenly Bodies. The Fantastics should be in a padded cell or on death row. The attack in the parking lot last week went too far, and it had nothing to do with wrestling. At SummerBlast, they’re having a Smoky Mountain Street Fight. The baddest man wins.

-We look back at last week, when Tim Horner cost Buddy Landell the SMW Title. Horner says Landell has made his life tough the last few weeks and Horner is just going to give him a taste of his own medicine, and it tastes awfully sweet.

“White Lightning” TIM HORNER vs. “Golden Boy” JOE CAZANA
-Horner is such a good mat wrestler that he actually manages to turn the lock-up into a roll-up for two. Hiptosses and an armdrag by Horner. Cazana fights out, but gets armdragged into an armbar. Cazana gets free and tries a corner charge, but Horner dodges it and armdrags him into an armbar again. Cazana is a slow learner.

-Cazana backs Horner into the corner and gets dirty, gouging the eyes and using closed fists to take control. Elbow gets a one-count. He chokes out Horner as Dutch Mantell points out that Cazana “looks like he stepped off a Quaker Oats box,” and now I can’t unsee it.

-Horner gets the win out of nowhere with the Natural Bridge (a fine product of the Quaker Oats company) but suddenly Buddy Landell runs in and wails on Horner with a belt. Caudle hastily throws it to commercial, hoping to restore order during the break.

-Phil Rainey talks to Dirty White Boy. Brian Lee is going down. The Heavenly Bodies are coming to Benton, Tennessee for a four-team elimination battle for a shot at $5,000. They want the belts, but they don’t want any of those butt-ugly Tennessee women.

-We go to footage from a Knoxville house show, with Robert Gibson battling Jimmy Golden. Golden gets the win with a foreign object. We get words from Golden, who is literally holding a chain in his wrist as he says he’s tired of being accused of using a chain to get the win and he doesn’t even own a chain. If Gibson wants to whine about that loss, Golden is willing to offer him a re-match, and he’ll knock Gibson out again.

“Rock ‘N Roll” ROBERT GIBSON vs. RICK CANNON
-Gibson slams Cannon and drops a knee for two. Gibson works the arm as another big match is announced for SummerBlast. Robert Gibson vs. Jimmy Golden with the weirdest stipulation ever: Fans will be brought into the ring and permitted to search Golden for weapons before the bell. Mantell immediately objects because looking at the disgusting fans in the Smoky Mountains, that can’t be anything less than a major health and safety hazard.

-Cannon charges at Gibson, but Gibson raises a knee and follows with a bulldog for three.

DOWN AND DIRTY WITH DUTCH
-Dutch welcomes Buddy Landell. Buddy credits riding in cars with Dutch with all the knowledge he has about attacking people from behind and beating them. Tim Horner just got the whoopin’ his mama shoulda given him a long time ago. Tim Horner shows up and chases Buddy off with a belt, and Dutch immediately tells Tim Horner that what Buddy did was just awful and he hopes that Tim Horner gives him the beating he deserves.

“Prime Time” BRIAN LEE (SMW Champion) vs. PAUL LEE
-Dutch suspects that Paul Lee is Brian Lee’s son. “Knowing Brian’s loose morals, I wouldn’t doubt it.”
-Lee pounds Lee down. Lee fights back with chops, but Lee shakes them off and Irish whips Lee before bringing him down with the mat with an armbar. Lee sends Lee into the corner, and Lee Flair flips, runs to the opposite side, and goes to the top rope. Lee powerslams him off, and then ends it with the Cancellation.

-We flash back to 1987 and watch Ron Garvin winning the NWA Title from Ric Flair. We hear from Garvin one more time. He’s on his way back to the Smoky Mountains. Brian Lee says he and the Hands of Stone aren’t bringin’ nothin’ but a butt-whoopin’ to SummerBlast.

-We get words from Mr. Ron Wright, Mr. Wonderful, and Mr. White Boy. Mr. Ron Wright needs an extra heart pill because he’s so worried. Orndorff says that an old video of a victory over Ric Flair don’t mean anything, because if you look over Flair’s whole career, who DOESN’T have a victory over Ric Flair? Honestly, Orndorff has a point there.

-We go to footage of a Smoky Mountain Wrestling event, where Bob Armstrong presents an award to an elderly fan named Bouncing Beulah. She’s been coming to live wrestling shows throughout Tennessee for the past 50 years, and Armstrong presents her with a lifetime pass to Smoky Mountain Wrestling. If she shows up at any venue with the pass, she gets in, no questions asked. Take THAT, Vladimir!

-The Fantastics are looking for the Heavenly Bodies. Corny instigated the whole thing by interfering in the house show match, and they’re going to bust up the Bodies any chance they get.

-Tim Horner is going zig and zag his white lightning all over Benton, TN, and he promises to interfere in the $5,000 tag team match just to mess with Buddy Landell. Brian Lee is ready to put his belt on the line in Benton, TN, and the White Boy had bette be ready too.

BATTON TWINS vs. “Nitro” DANNY DAVIS & DIXIE DY-NO-MITE
-Caudle talks about how great it is to see good, clean scientific wrestling again, while Mantell predicts that this match will be about as exciting as a TV fishing show.

-Davis hiptosses one of the Batton Twins and shakes hands with him afterward. The other one tags in and they trade hammerlocks until suddenly a brawl from the locker room spills out into the arena, with the Fantastics and the Heavenly Bodies going at it. The brawl winds up in the ring, ending the match abruptly. Lane (wearing a football helmet) works over Jackie with the tennis racquet, while Corny attacks Bobby with a chair. A whole host of wrestlers show up to break up the fight, but hilariously get pre-occupied fighting each other on the floor, so nobody is breaking up the brawl in the ring.

Tag team division and Horner/Landell are both giving us just awesome stuff week after week, but Brian Lee as champion just isn't doing anything for me.
