Views from the Hawke’s Nest: Pro Wrestling Guerrilla DDT4 2008 – Night 2

DDT4 Night Two

May 18, 2005
Burbank, California

Commentators: Excalibur, Dino Winwood, & TARO

Excalibur discussed his crushing loss to Owen Steen in the main event of Night 1. Excalibur then returned a driver’s license to a fan that had been left there the night before. The fan then did some pushups after Excalibur questioned the weight he wrote down. Ronin and Super Dragon are injured and cannot compete tonight. Super Dragon would not wrestle again for over three years.

Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament 2008 Semi Final Match
Jack Evans & Roderick Strong vs. Los Luchas (Phoenix Star & Zokre)
After some back and forth action, Roddy cut off Zokre for his team. Zokre then got worked over. Los Luchas eventually made a comeback. The teams went back and forth. Evans and Roddy eventually finished them with Skipping a Generation.

This was a solid opener. The closing stretch probably went on a bit too long though.
Match Rating: **3/4

Austin Aries vs. Davey Richards
Aries was supposed to wrestle the debuting Brandon Bonham, but he had a family commitment.

Aries got control early on, but Davey blocked the heat seeking missile. Davey then worked over Aries. Aries managed to get Davey to the floor, and he then connected on the heat seeking missile. They started going back and forth in the ring. Aries hit the brainbuster for a nearfall. Davey was building some momentum, but Aries got the Horns of Aries. Davey reversed it into the Cloverleaf! Aries tapped out!

Davey told the fans that he was going to Japan for three months, but that he was coming for the PWG World Championship as soon as he got back.

This was a solid midcard match. Davey has almost always been better off when he showed restraint in matches instead of going overboard. That’s what happened here.

PWG World Tag Team Title Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament 2008 Semi Final Match
El Generico & Kevin Steen (c) vs. El Blazer & KAGETORA
After Blazer and KAGETORA’s PWG debut last night, I am now very hyped for this match.

Blazer and Generico did an awesome sequence. Steen and Generico eventually cut off Blazer and worked him over. Blazer eventually planted Steen with a satellite DDT, and KAGETORA made a hot tag. Blazer hit a ridiculous springboard press moonsault to the floor. The teams started going back and forth. There were some real good nearfalls. Not everything was pulled off flawlessly, but the finish was awesome. Generico popped Blazer into the air, and Steen hit a diving lariat.

I actually preferred Blazer/KAGETORA’s match with Lost/Ryan the night before, but this was also a ton of fun. Why did El Blazer never come back????

Dino Winwood politely asked Human Tornado to give back the PWG World Championship since he was injured. Tornado was on crutches. Tornado wanted Candice to come out and take the belt. He shook Candice’s hand but then grabbed her hair. DINO WINWOOD STARTED KICKING THE SHIT OUT OF TORNADO! Jay Briscoe made the save for Tornado. Necro Butcher made the save for Dino.

Jay Briscoe (w/Human Tornado) vs. Necro Butcher
They started brawling all over the place. Jay Briscoe was wearing jorts without irony. Tornado hit Necro with a crutch at one point. Jay worked over Necro for a while. Necro finally sent Jay into a chair, but Jay came right back with a reverse STO into a chair and a German onto a chair. What is wrong with Necro? Jay went for a guillotine legdrop but came up empty. Necro then made a comeback. Human Tornado hit the referee for the disqualification?

Necro hit Tornado’s injured leg with his own crutch. Necro then hit Jay with a Tiger Driver for the metaphorical victory.

I really could not get into this at all. It felt like a real monotone brawl.

2.0 (Jagged & Shane Matthews), Candice LeRae & Scorpio Sky vs. Hook Bomberry, The Dynasty (Joey Ryan & Scott Lost) & TJ Perkins
TJP hit Ronin’s injured leg with a chair before the match. Candice replaced him.

This is the first time that Joey Ryan and Candice LeRae went at it in a PWG ring. They would proceed to have a feud that would haunt PWG DVDs for years to come. The tecnicos dominated the match for a while. Sky was finally cut off by the rudos and then worked over. Sky finally escaped. The match naturally broke down after the tecnico comeback. Hook pulled his pants down to assault Candice, but Sky gave him an Ace Crusher. Ryan then gave Candice a boob-plex. The first boob-plex? Sky wiped out the rudos with a crazy dive. Candice hit the tope tornado DDT. Big Magic was too nervous to dive. More movez. Joey eventually finished Candice with a spear and then a folding powerbomb: 1…2…3

This was well-done and featured a ton of variety. I wouldn’t say I’m surprised or disappointed about 2.0 never coming back to PWG, but I definitely think they bring something unique to the table that PWG is often lacking.

PWG World Tag Team Title Dynamite Duumvirate Tag Team Title Tournament 2008 Final Match
El Generico & Kevin Steen (c) vs. Jack Evans & Roderick Strong
Roddy and Evans had all the momentum early on. The champs eventually cut off Evans though and then worked him over. Evans came back on Generico with a Meteora variation, and then tagged out. Roddy made his usual awesome hot tag. The match broke down very quickly. Evans recovered awfully quickly. The teams went back and forth. Generico wiped out Roddy with a Fosbury Flop. Roddy and Evans came right back with Skipping a Generation: 1…2…3!!! New champs!

Steen tried to walk out with the belts, but Generico made him think better of it.

This was a pretty good finals. They worked hard and did lots of stuff! The crowd was fairly into it as well. It’s nothing to get too excited about, but it was a satisfying end to a fun weekend.
Match Rating: ***1/4

Overall, this was a solid conclusion to the weekend. Most of the matches delivered well enough, but there was definitely nothing memorable about this show (or the weekend in general). DDT4 2008 was an improvement over the 2007 version. That took me by surprise.
