PWG Sells Out 3 - The Best of Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Volume 3

The Young Bucks(c) (Nick & Matt Jackson) vs. The Hybrid Dolphins (Bryan Danielson & Roderick Strong)

The was the finals of the 2009 DDT4. The Bucks had successfully defended the belts twice in the tournament already. The first half of this match was absolutely amazing as the Dolphins just beat the shit out of the Bucks. It was glorious, brothers and sisters. The comeback from the Bucks could not really live up to that though, as it was just any old comeback from the Bucks (which is usually just fine with me). So, half the match is possibly one of the best things in company history, and the second half is “just” good. The Bucks ended up winning with MBFYB on Bryan. (****)

Davey Richards vs. Roderick Strong

I had fond memories of this being a balls-to-the-wall, condensed version of their typical match. To a certain extant, that is what the match is, but it is just not as fun or as interesting as I remember. Davey does some stuff. Roddy does stuff. They go back and forth until Roddy wins with the Gibson Driver. It is not really a notable match in any way. (**1/2)

The Young Bucks(c) (Nick & Matt Jackson) vs. The Dynasty (Karl Anderson & Joey Ryan) [PWG World Tag Team Championship]

This was very much a Young Bucks match but with the uniqueness of Karl Anderson being involved (and years before he was ruined by the Bullet Club). That did not end up meaning all that much, as it was just a Bucks match. They did a lot, and the crowd was hot for it. Sometimes that formula works as well as anything in pro wrestling, and other times it just seems ever-so slightly off. This was a case of the latter. It was good but not great. The Bucks retained the title after MBFYB on Ryan. (***1/2)

Chris Hero(c) vs. Bryan Danielson [PWG World Championship]

This was Bryan’s last scheduled match in PWG before he made his way UP NORTH to work for VINCE JUNIOR in NEW YORK. The match itself is much more about the emotion and the stakes than the actual work (which was rather pedestrian for Bryan). Hero dominated the majority of this match, and Bryan just had to show enough fire to keep everyone caring. They did not even build to the finish (variation on an armbar) all that well, but it got an incredible reaction because of how shocking it was that Bryan would win the belt on his way to the WWE. This remains a very cool match in PWG’s history even though the substance is a bit lacking. (***1/2)

We got to see Bryan’s promo in the back. It was very sweet. Hero then cut a very passionate promo about his loss.

Chris Hero vs. El Generico

Much like the Bryan match above, this is another Hero match that I find ‘fun’ more than ‘great.’ Hero is being a bit of a jerk, and Generico is a beloved babyface. Hero mostly stayed a step ahead of him for the majority of the match until he won with the Hero’s Welcome. I enjoyed it, but I much prefer Hero in compact matches. (***1/4)

Kenny Omega vs. Roderick Strong [PWG World Championship]

This was also the finals of the Battle of Los Angeles. That context is important, as the match was worked like two tired guys mindlessly brawling and throwing bombs because they were too tired to do anything that made sense. That kind of match works in a more compact match, but this just went way too long. The match felt repetitive as well which did not help matters. Omega pinned Roddy after a second Croyt’s Wrath. (**1/2)

Rob Van Dam vs. Roderick Strong vs. Chris Hero

This is just about as cliche as a triple threat can be. It’s neat that RVD once worked a match in PWG, and I did not mind watching it back. It is far away from anything worth celebrating though. I did not see a single memorable moment or sequence in this entire match. That almost makes it noteworthy. RVD won with the frog splash on Roddy. (*1/2)
