El Generico vs. Kevin Steen

These guys were supposed to challenge Arial Express, but they weren’t at the show for whatever reason. Thus, they were then booked against each other. Steen is in amazing shape here. This is the PWG debut for both men.

Steen jumped Generico from behind. Generico quickly made a comeback and hit his swinging DDT. Generico went for a slingshot move, but Steen caught him with an Ace Crusher. Generico went for his swinging DDT again, but Steen reversed it into a backbreaker. Steen proceeded to dominate Generico for a while. It was a grand. Steen got a nearfall with a Liger bomb. Steen got himself hung up in the ropes, and that allowed Generico a chance to hit a Lionsault. Both men got to their feet, and they slugged it out. Generico got a nearfall with a bridging German suplex. Generico then hit a Michinoku Driver: 1…2…NO! Steen came back with a superkick. Generico came back with a weak Yakuza kick and then an awesome Yakuza kick. Steen fell to the floor, and Generico then hit a tope con hello. Steen came back with a STO, which got him a nearfall. Steen then hit the package piledriver: 1…2…Steen pulled him up! Steen called for another piledriver, but Generico came back with the Buckle Exploder. Generico followed that up with the half-nelson suplex and a brainbuster: 1…2…3!

This match was a ton of fun. These guys obviously had great chemistry, and everything they did was geared towards being as entertaining as possible. While they will obviously have much better matches down the line, I really enjoyed this one a great deal.

El Generico & Quicksilver vs. Chris Bosh & Scott Lost

The winners became the number one contenders for the PWG tag titles. Fun fact: this is the first time I’ve ever seen Chris Bosh wrestle.

Generico and Lost started the match. Generico quickly hit a slingshot corkscrew plancha. Bosh and Quicksilver tagged in. Quicksilver had much success. The rudos were eventually able to isolate Quicksilver, and they worked him over for a bit. Quicksilver was eventually able to hit Lost with a neckbreaker. Generico tagged in and ran wild. Generico hit the Big Boy Moonsault on Lost. He followed it up with a diving crossbody on Bosh for a nearfall. Bosh and Lost were able to double team Quicksilver for a bit. Quicksilver came back, and Generico hit Lost with a Lionsault: 1…2…NO! Generico hit Lost with a Made in Japan variation: 1…2…BOSH MAKES THE SAVE! The crowd is hot for this. Quicksilver gave Bosh a spinebuster, and he then wiped out Lost with a Deadman Suicida. Lost and Quicksilver fell to the floor with a Dynamite Suplex. Generico then killed Bosh with a Yakuza and went for the turnbuckle brainbuster! Lost saved Bosh. Quicksilver killed Bosh, and Generico then hit Bosh with the brainbuster: 1…2…3!!!

I’ve never been a big fan of Lost or Quicksilver, but this match ended up being pretty awesome. While this building didn’t have the overall greatness of Reseda, this match was definitely enhanced by the PWG crowd (which was molten as Quicksilver and Generico started their comeback). My expectations for this match were modest; the wrestlers blew me away.

Backstage Skits
El Generico and Colt Cabana are whacky. The highlight is them jerking off to Excalibur reading a book.

Cima vs. El Generico

This was a semifinals match in the 2006 BOLA.

They took their time to get going here. Cima eventually cut off Generico with the superdrol and then worked Generico over. Generico came back after a variation of the Asai Moonsault. Cima eventually started to fight back. They started going back and forth. They traded some big nearfalls. Cima eventually finished Generico after a second Schwein.

I never got tremendously emotionally invested in this one, but I enjoyed it all the way through.

El Generico vs. PAC

PAC is not the jacked up dude you know in 2012 (Yes, I started writing this review in 2012). For lack of a better term, PAC looks scrawny, but with abs. Quite frankly, he looks like a jobber. But he doesn’t wrestle like one.

They did an extended feeling out process. They ended up on the floor. PAC casually hit an Asai Moonsault. Back in the ring, PAC got a nearfall with a spike hurricanrana. Generico came back with a Blue Thunder variation. Generico got a nearfall with a leg lariat. PAC came back with a handspring with a swinging DDT. I’m not sure how that happened. PAC hit a standing backflip senton for a nearfall. PAC went for a middle rope shooting legdrop, but Generico avoided it and hit a half-nelson suplex: 1…2…NO! PAC avoided a brainbuster once and he reversed a second attempt with a snap hurricanrana: 1…2…NO! Generico came back with his Made in Japan variation: 1…2…NO! PAC came back with a super reverse hurricanrana and a standing shooting star press: 1…2…NO! PAC went for the corkscrew shooting star, but Generico got his knees up! Generico then hit a Yakuza and the Turnbuckle Brainbustah: 1…2…3!

This was just a crazy athletic exhibition, and I don’t mean that as a backhanded compliment at all. These two have always had tremendous in-ring chemistry, and it’s a delight to remember that they’ve been this good together since their early days working each other.

El Generico & Kevin Steen vs. PAC & Roderick Strong© [PWG World Tag Titles]
Strong and PAC were supposed to face the Briscoes, but they no-showed. Generico was the PWG World Champion at the time.

PAC looks less geeky here. PAC and Roddy cut off Generico early, and they worked him over for a bit. Generico was eventually able to hit PAC with a leg lariat. Steen tagged in. Steen and PAC worked over PAC for a while. PAC came back with a shooting star knee drop on Steen. Roddy and Generico tagged in. Roddy and PAC made a big comeback. Steen killed PAC with a lariat: 1…2…NO! Steen then hit PAC with the pumphandle neckbreaker: 1…2…NO! PAC came back with a reverse hurricanrana, and Roddy hit then hit Steen with the Sick Kick. PAC wiped out Generico with a plancha! PAC hit Steen with a 450 elbow drop: 1…2…NO! Roddy and Generico struck it out. Steen went for a super F-5 on PAC (I think), but slightly fucked it up. Steen then hit PAC with a moonsault and Generico hit him with a Superfly Splash: 1…2…NO! Generico wiped out Roddy with a plancha. Steen hit PAC with a package piledriver, and Generico then hit him with a brainbuster: 1…2…3! New champs!

The structure of the match was paint-by-numbers for the major independent wrestling companies of the last fifteen years, but it was executed just about as well as it can be done. I enjoyed this from the beginning until the very end.

As Generico and Steen celebrate in the ring, a bloody Bryan Danielson comes out and tells asks Steen to go to the back. Dragon challenges Generico to a PWG World Title match, because that was the originally scheduled main event. Dragon slapped Generico and it’s on!

El Generico© vs. Bryan Danielson [PWG World Title]

Dragon wrestled Necro Butcher earlier in the evening. Generico almost immediately hits the Big Boy Moonsault. Back in the ring, Dragon locked in the Calgary Crab. Generico made the ropes. Dragon worked him over for a while. Generico came back and got a nearfall with a Blue Thunder Bomb. Generico hit a swinging DDT, but Dragon came back with a saito suplex. They traded running strikes. Generico hit a pair of Yakuzas and then a half-nelson suplex. Dragon went for Cattle Mutilation, but Generico escaped and hit a brainbuster: 1…2…NO! Dragon ended up on a turnbuckle, and Generico hit a Yakuza. Dragon avoided a turnbuckle brainbustah, and he came back with a super back suplex. CATTLE MUTILATION! Generico made the ropes! Dragon locked it in again! Dragon then delivered some knees to Generico’s head. Tiger Suplex from Dragon. Dragon then rained in the elbows before locking in Cattle Mutilation again! Generico taps out!

These two have been 1-2 for best wrestler in the world for about five years now (again, written in 2012), but they never met up as often as I liked. Luckily, whenever they did meet up, the results were usually awesome, and this match was not an exception. I hope I get to see another proper Danielson heel run, as he’s just so great in the role.

El Generico vs. Nigel McGuinness

This was a semi-finals match in the 2007 BOLA. I believe this was Nigel’s first weekend in PWG. He only ever worked two BOLAs for PWG. I’m not sure why.

Generico sent Nigel to the floor early and then did a feint dive. Nigel went back in the ring, but Generico remained in control. Nigel was finally able to cut him off with a divorce court. Nigel destroyed Generico with a nasty short-range lariat. Nigel locked in an armlock, but Generico quickly made the ropes. Nigel started to focus his offense on Generico’s left arm. Nigel was in control for a while. Generico eventually managed to hit a tornado DDT. Nigel fell to the floor. Generico then hit a triple jump somersault plancha. Back in the ring, Nigel came back with a discus lariat and the Tower of London: 1…2…NO! Generico came back with three mafia kicks: 1…2…NO! Nigel then locked in a variation of the London Dungeon. Generico struggled for a while before he eventually made the ropes. Nigel hit another lariat, but Generico came right back with a brainbuster: 1…2…NO! Nigel caught Generico with a small package for a nearfall. Nigel went for the Jawbreaker lariat, but Generico avoided it and got a schoolboy: 1…2…3!

Hey now, this was a heck of a match, but the crowd really wasn’t there to provide the best environment possible. These two were probably two of the best wrestlers of the 2000s though, so it was always a treat to watch them do their thing in the ring together.

We got a series of backstage clips of Chuck Taylor and Kenny Omega feuding with Generico. At one point, Rick Knox stepped in and evened the odds, so the Men of Low Moral Fiber backed off.

El Generico vs. Kenny Omega
This was right around the time that PWG became really hot. They started tightening up their cards and only running Reseda.

PWG had not mastered the concept of lighting yet at this time though. So, basically it looks like dusk. Excalibur explained that Kenny Omega hated orphans. Omega eye-poked Generico early, and Rick Knox let it go. Generico was so blinded that he accidentally gave Knox an arm drag. Omega poked Generico in the eye again, and he then squatted on Knox’s face. Omega went for another eye poke, but Generico blocked. THIS…IS…SERIOUS! Omega threw his shirt at Generico. Generico then tried to throw it to the crowd, but this made Omega really upset. Generico used the shirt against Omega. Omega fell to the floor, and Generico did the feint dive. Generico was in complete control. Omega cut him off with another eyepoke. Omega worked him over after that. Generico made a comeback after a diving hurricanrana. They started going back and forth. Omega went for the eyes again, hit the Hadouken, and got a small package: 1…2…NO! Omega got mad at Rick Knox and started to bully him. Knox hit him with the leaping lariat! Yakuza/Turnbuckle brainbuster from Generico: 1…2…3!!!!!!

Generico looked awesome here, but Omega’s shtick was just eye-roll inducing. (It works better in PWG than it currently (2015) does in NJPW at least.) The match was well-paced at least, and it peaked perfectly at the end when Generico won. Good match overall.

We saw Colt Cabana help El Generico cut a promo on Omega/Chuck. This would give you an idea of what Jimmy Fallon would be like in wrestling.

Two Skinny Black Guys (El Generico & The Human Tornado) vs. The Young Bucks(Nick & Matt Jackson)

The teams battled for control early on. Generico was eventually cut off and then worked over for a while. Generico fought back on Matt, and Tornado then made a hot tag. Generico got back involved within thirty seconds to kill the point of the heat segment. PWG rarely did/does stuff like that well. Two Skinny Black Guys made a huge comeback. The Bucks fought back. Nick hit a wild tope suicida on Tornado. The match has officially picked up. The match slowed down again. The match was just going too long for my tastes. The Bucks hit Tornado with More Bang for Your Buck, but Generico made the save! They tried to give MBFYB to Tornado again, but Generico gave Nick a yakuza. Turnbuckle brainbuster to Nick: 1…2…3!

The structure of this match was typical for a big PWG tag match. The problem was the execution of the back-and-forth sequence to finish the match.

We saw another backstage segment between Generico, Omega, and Chuck. It was humorous.
