Wrestling’s 4Rs: The Right, Wrong and Ridiculous of WWE Smackdown

How the 4Rs of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO-THREE times a week. We will group our feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and needs discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come. This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, our goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. We will not apologize for our opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

– Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin never started
Non-Title Match: AJ Styles defeated IC Champion The Miz @ 15:45 via pin
– Paige and Natalya defeated Tamina and Naomi @ 5:12 via pin
– R-Truth defeated Fandango @ 1:50 via pin
– Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens defeated Dean Ambrose and Sami Zayn @ 12:45 via pin

THE Right:
Miz TV: I hate to keep harping on the same things, but I just have to say it again; the combination of Miz and Mayrse are SUPER annoying, as is Miz’s new deal of ‘acing’ during his promos. So why do I list it in the right of Smackdown? That’s easy, for the first time in years…I really dislike Miz and want to see him get his face punched in.

Attack on Ziggler: When I heard that Corbin was to face Ziggler on this show, I was prepared to list it in the ‘wRong’ section. I’ve always hated guys who are in the middle of a feud being involved in any matches prior to a pay-per-view. Needless to say, Baron jumping Ziggler really surprised me…and that’s a good thing. Bravo Smackdown, bravo.

Miz Vs. AJ Styles: This match was really good. AJ is a beast in the ring, and continues to pull things out of his back pocket that makes him stand out among the WWE roster. By the same token, Miz showed here that he’s more than capable to put on an excellent match, and in my opinion; makes a good argument for the fact that he could be one of the most underrated guys on the roster. I liked the appearance of Gallows and Anderson to keep Miz from running out of the match, and appreciated that they didn’t get involved; letting AJ get the win. In my opinion, both Miz and AJ came out of this match looking better than when they went in.

Ambrose and Zayn: Their backstage promo was great in my opinion. I enjoyed the bickering between the two. Some may feel it was pointless, but I think it’s the subtle things like that, that add layers to a guy’s character. Zayn needed that little something extra in the personality department; and that was a good step.

The Vaudevillians/Enzo and Cass: The Vaudevillians are a perfect foil to Enzo and Cass. Enzo is must listen when he’s on the mic. He’s so confident that I can’t help but believe in him, even at his size. Really looking forward to this match-up at Payback.

Paige and Nattie Win: Given Nattie’s treatment over the years, I can’t be sure if we are heading toward a possible Women’s Title win for her or not. However, if she has any chance of looking like a credible threat; it’s important she’s made to look strong leading in to Payback. I’m proud to see that she got a clean win here.

puRgatoRy:
Goldust and R-Truth: Jerry Lawler said it best when he questioned if these two would ever team up. I for one am looking for the eventual payoff. The long build to teaming them seems pointless. I’m all for the comedy, and let’s face it; the match with Fandango was a lot of fun due to all the dancing; but there’s plenty of fun that could come from teaming Truth and Goldy up…let’s get on with it.

THE wRong:
Jerry Lawler Commentary: I hate to keep picking on a man who I’ve loved for years, but it’s to a point that I can no longer defend Lawler. His commentary used to be a highlight of every Monday Night Raw; sadly, these days, his sound bites are more often than not corny. He’s a shell of his former self, and as much as I hate to say it; it may be time for Lawler to leave the booth and make way for fresh blood in the heel role. (Corey Graves anyone?)

Tag Team Main-Event: Before anyone jumps my case, this match its self is perfectly fine. It’s always a pleasure to see these four work, regardless of the situation, but as I mentioned earlier…I’m not a fan of having guys who should (or are) having a match at an upcoming pay-per-view face off in any type of match situation. If I’ve already seen them wrestle leading up to the show, why should I care about it when they have the one-on-one?

THE Ridiculous:
Jerry Lawler’s Shirt: Seriously…it was ridiculous.

Overall I give this show an 8 out of 10. Perfectly fine show. Very little I’d change. WWE is on a roll lately…let’s hope the trend continues.
