Rian Johnson Comments On The “Accident” Of Elon Musk Comparisons In Glass Onion

Speaking recently with Wired, director Rian Johnson shared some details on the development of his latest film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Johnson is no stranger to the backlash potential of social media, given his experiences in the wake of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and his most recent production has caught the ire of both Ben Shapiro and an army of Elon Musk fans due to the seemingly-prescient inclusion of a tech billionaire character played by Edward Norton. Given that Glass Onion‘s script was written far in advance of Musk’s Twitter takeover, comparisons seem largely coincidental at best, as Johnson told Wired. On the parallels between Norton’s character and Musk: “It’s so weird. It’s very bizarre. I hope there isn’t some secret marketing department at Netflix that’s funding this Twitter takeover.”

On the hazards of using archetypes that pull their basis from reality: “There’s a lot of general stuff about that sort of species of tech billionaire that went directly into it. But obviously, it has almost a weird relevance in exactly the current moment. A friend of mine said, ‘Man, that feels like it was written this afternoon.’ And that’s just sort of a horrible, horrible accident, you know?”
