Munchkin: Critical Role

The Mighty Nein are headed into min-max territory, with a Critical Role edition of the card game Munchkin on the way. The Op has announced that they’ve partnered with the incredibly popular online D&D streaming show to produce a co-brand licensed edition of Munchkin based on the show’s second and current campaign alongside Steve Jackson Games. The version will see players compete to grab magic and kill monsters specific to Critical Role, such as Lorenzo and Avantika.

Munchkin, for those unaware, is a role-playing card game in which players take on the role of adventurers seeking treasure and levels so they can hit Level 10 and win the game. They do that by kicking down dungeon doors and fighting the monsters inside, combining the stats of their level, any equipment bonuses they have and effect cards to beat the monster’s score. The goal is to level up faster than the other players, and you can accomplish that by simply powering through on your own or soliciting help from other players in deals to defeat the monsters at a cost. Along with that comes a fair amount of betrayal as players try to hurt their friends’ chances to advance before they can.

“We’re thrilled to see the world and characters of the Mighty Nein come to life in card game form with Munchkin, and we can’t wait to share it with the ‘Critters’. We wouldn’t be here today without them,” said Ben Van Der Fluit, Vice President of Business Development for Critical Role.

“Fast-playing and silly, Munchkin appeals to a very wide audience,” says Phil Reed, CEO of Steve Jackson Games.

The game will be available this fall in North America, the UK, Australia and New Zealand in specialty stores. You can find out more about the game here and check out the product page here.

The move is the latest expansion of the Critical Role, with an official D&D campaign setting arriving on March 17th and a two-season animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina, coming to Amazon Prime.
