Baldur’s Gate III is coming soon, and gameplay from the highly-anticipated game was revealed during the D&D Live event this weekend. Game designer Swen Vincke of Larian Studios did a gameplay run of the first new entry in the popular D&D franchise since 2004’s spin-off Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. You can see the video below.

The gameplay video reveals some of the mechanics that will be in play, including skill rolls, how combat works and more. The game will use a turn-based combat system similar to Larian’s Original Sin series and playing off the tabletop rules of D&D 5E. In addition, 5E’s Inspiration system that allows for die rerolls will be a part of the game. The gameplay video starts with a party of four, all infected by a parasite that will turn them into mind flayers soon, trying to make their way to a healer that can purge them of the affliction. Along the way they end up in a few fights of course, but Vincke also gets to show off how the dialogue options work and a bit of the storyline.

Baldur’s Gate III is being developed by Larian Studios and will use the D&D Fifth Edition ruleset. The game is set directly after the events of the recent D&D campaign storyline Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus. Vincke noted that they are hoping to have the game enter early access in August. It will be available for Google Stadia and PC.
