Blizzard Confirms That Overwatch Character Tracer Is Gay

December 27, 2016 | Posted by Joseph Lee

IGN reports that Blizzard has confirmed that Overwatch character Tracer is a lesbian. The news was revealed with a new free comic called Reflections, which you can read here.

She states that this year’s Christmas “is going to be different.” She then gets a gift from a stranger she helped and comes home to her girlfriend Emily. Emily opens the present and kisses her to thank her for the scarf. It ends with the two surprising Winston after he was sad about spending the holidays alone.

This comes after artistic director Bill Petras stated at BlizzCon 2015 that the game would have gay characters, but didn’t reveal which one. Blizzard’s Chris Metzen said there would be multiple LGBTQ characters in the game, so others will likely be announced in the future.

Tracer is one of the most popular characters of the game and was a huge part of the ads for it. She has been portrayed as lesbian by fan fiction and on Tumblr, with many shipping her and Widowmaker.

A representative for Blizzard stated: “Tracer is a lesbian on the LGBTQ+ spectrum. As in real life, having variety in our characters and their identities and backgrounds helps create a richer and deeper overall fictional universe. From the beginning, we’ve wanted the universe of Overwatch to feel welcoming and inclusive, and to reflect the diversity of our players around the world. As with any aspect of our characters’ backgrounds, their sexuality is just one part of what makes our heroes who they are.
