If you have any level of experience or interest in the tabletop game community, you’ve probably heard of Gloomhaven. It’s one of the most well-received dungeon crawl board games of all-time, legendary for both its massive Kickstarter success in 2017 and $124.99 cover price. For those who don’t want to cough up that much to get into the adventuring action though, an option is now available if you have a PC and a Steam. Asmodee Digital has launched the early-access version of the Gloomhaven game so that players can take their mercenaries into the dungeons of the board game without needing the physical game.

The digital version of the Isaac Childres-created game has been developed by Flaming Fowl Studios and released via Asmodee Games. In it, players take on the role of a two to four mercenary squad to delve into the dungeon. The official description reads:

Acclaimed by both board game players and critics (highest rated game of all time on BoardGameGeek.com), this turn-based tactical RPG set in a unique medieval dark fantasy universe, rewards strategic planning and problem solving. Prepare yourself fully for every journey by picking your party members and their abilities wisely, because in the turmoil of battle, your team synergy and tactics are all that will give you the upper hand. The world of Gloomhaven is unforgiving, so if you enter a dungeon ill-prepared, don’t expect to leave.

If you survive your perilous journey, you’ll gain the opportunity to upgrade your abilities, purchase new gear and unlock new mercenaries. Those party enhancements will help you to overcome malicious bandits, hordes of beasts, horrifying demons, or whatever else may find itself blocking your path. Nevertheless, there’s more than just one way to crush your foes and no decision should ever be made lightly, so advance with caution!

The game launched last month on Steam via the Early Access program, which the creators say they expect to stay in for “at least 9-12 months as we want to work side by side with the community to create more new features and unique content, including that which doesn’t already exist within the board game.” The plan is to add more playable characters, items, enemies, bosses and environments to our Adventure Mode. The current Early Access mode has four playable characters, nine enemy classes (standard and elite variants) and three bosses to face in a roguelike Adventure mode. The mode features a new map created with the assistance of Childres.

The game is currently available via Early Access for $24.99, which may be a good time to jump in. The Early Access notes state that “We will increase the price of the game at full launch, as we offer more features and the campaign. Those who purchased during Early Access will not be charged extra at full release. Also, the price of the game during Early Access won’t increase due to the additional content added during its development.”
