The Critical Role animated series that blew through its Kickstarter goals is heading to Amazon for a two-season order. Critical Role announced on Tuesday that they have partnered with Amazon to broadcast the series exclusively on Amazon Prime.

The announcement added:

“What’s more, Amazon is throwing their support behind the show, allowing us to improve on the quality of the animation, the score, the special effects – you name it. And with 24 episodes to play with, instead of just 10, we’ll not only complete the entire Briarwood storyline in the animated series, but we’ll forge ahead into other classic Vox Machina story arcs as well!”

Critical Role said that those who backed the Kickstarter will not be left behind and will still be able to watch the two-part special that begins the series before Amazon subscribers can. In addition, backers will have access for the first season for free. More details are expected to come, with the announcement promising details late next year.

“We were absolutely floored by the level of enthusiasm we received on the Kickstarter campaign, and now we can deliver exactly what the fans wanted, and MORE,” said Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham, cast members of Critical Role and executive producers on the series. “Teaming with Prime Video to deliver the series to fans across the globe is exciting and surreal — and we’re psyched to be able to tell even more stories with not just one, but two 12-episode seasons!”

“Critical Role blazed a new trail for original digital content, with fresh new voices and humor that earned devoted fans around the world, as evidenced by their wildly successful Kickstarter campaign,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “We’re thrilled to work with the whole team to bring The Legend of Vox Machina, and new Critical Role series, to our Prime Video customers.”

The Kickstarter was initially set at $750,000, but blew through that in just two hours and ultimately topped out at $11.4 million for ten episodes. The additional season ordered by Amazon and an additional two episodes per season brings the total to 24 episodes.

Critical Role is a streaming D&D series with voice actors Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham. Mercer is the DM leading the rest of the players through adventures in his original world of Exandria. The series streams on Twitch and is in its second campaign, centered around a group of PCs known as the “Mighty Nein.” The first campaign told the tale of Vox Machina, the heroes that will be the center of the animated series.

Before and after breaking out on their own from Geek & Sundry, Critical Role has continued to launch other shows via their Twitch channel and YouTube account. They include Between the Sheets, an interview series hosted by Brian W. Foster in which he has conversations with geek-adjacent and creative minds; UnDeadwood, which uses the Deadlands Reloaded system, and others.

Titmouse will handle the animation for the series, which is being desacribed as an “adult animated action-comedy.”
