Icewind Dale - Rime of the Frostmaiden D&D

The next Dungeons & Dragons storyline has been announced, and it will bring horror to a familiar setting – namely, Icewind Dale. Wizards of the Coast announced at D&D Live over the weekend that Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden will be released on September 15th and will bring players to the Forgotten Realms setting popularized not only in the isometric video game series, but also the trilogy of books by R. A. Salvator — The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, and The Halfling’s Gem — that introduced Drizzt Do’Urden to Faerun.

The campaign is the latest adventure for Dungeons & Dragon’s Fifth Edition, following immediately on the well-received Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus. Other 5E campaigns have included the Tyranny of Dragons set, Princes of the Apocalypse, Out of the Abyss, Curse of Strahd, and Dungeon of the Mad Mage, among others.

Rime of the Frostmaiden is set in Ten-Towns, the loose alliance of cities found within Icewind Dale, and centers itself around the goddess of cold and winter, Auril. Also known as the Frostmaiden, Auril becomes the focus of the campaign which will take players from 1st to 12th level. The sourcebook will feature a tone inspired by John Carpenter’s The Thing, dealing with issues of isolation, paranoia, and secrecy. Each character will have a random secret that only they know and, per Polygon, it will be up to them when to reveal the secret to the rest of the players and the DM.

The official synopsis for the storyline reads:

In Icewind Dale, adventure is a dish best served cold.

Beneath the unyielding night sky, you stand before a towering glacier and recite an ancient rhyme, causing a crack to form in the great wall of ice. Beyond this yawning fissure, the Caves of Hunger await. And past this icy dungeon is a secret so old and terrifying that few dare speak of it. The mad wizards of the Arcane Brotherhood long to possess that which the god of winter’s wrath has so coldly preserved—as do you! What fantastic secrets and treasures are entombed in the sunless heart of the glacier, and what will their discovery mean for the denizens of Icewind Dale? Can you save Ten-Towns from the Frostmaiden’s everlasting night?

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is a tale of dark terror that revisits the forlorn, flickering candlelights of civilization known as Ten-Towns and sheds light on the many bone-chilling locations that surround these frontier settlements.

The book will not only be a campaign adventure; it will also be a sourcebook for the Icewind Dale region with a host of new monsters and background information updating the setting for Faerun in Fifth Edition.

Rime of the Frostmaiden will be available via local gaming locations as well as digital marketplaces such as D&D Beyond, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds and DM’s Guild. You can see the cover art for the book below:
