Dungeons & Dragons is headed to the seas for its next adventure, titled Ghosts of Saltmarsh. Wizards of the Coast announced on Monday that the adventure is arriving on May 21st in your friendly local gaming store as well as online and digital merchants.

Ghosts of Saltmarsh will take players on an adventure culled from Dungeons & Dragons’ past. The module will combine some of the most popular classic adventures from D&D’s first edition, including the “U” series that comprised a set of underwater adventures. Longtime players of the game may remember the famous blue-covered adventures like The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Danger at Dunwater, and The Final Enemy, all of which were linked in a single campaign. The supplement will also include updates of the classic modules Salvage Operation, Isle of the Abbey, Tammeraut’s Fate, and The Styes, all of which came out of various issues of Dungeon Magazine.

The synopsis for Ghosts of Saltmarsh reads, “Nestled on the coast of the Azure Sea is Saltmarsh, a sleepy fishing village that sits on the precipice of destruction. Smugglers guide their ships to hidden coves, willing to slit the throat of anyone fool enough to cross their path. Cruel sahuagin gather beneath the waves, plotting to sweep away coastal cities. Drowned sailors stir to unnatural life, animated by dark magic and sent forth in search of revenge. The cult of a forbidden god extends its reach outward from a decaying port, hungry for fresh victims and willing recruits. While Saltmarsh slumbers, the evils that seek to plunder it grow stronger. Heroes must arise to keep the sea lanes safe for all.”

In addition to reviving those classic adventures for D&D Fifth Edition, the book will include details on the port town of Saltmarsh including several adventure hooks for DMs to utilize. As with most of Fifth Edition’s campaigns, Ghosts of Saltmarsh is designed to take players from first level on up, with this campaign running through level twelve. The appendices will also include several new mechanics for Dungeon Masters including ship-to-ship combat, new magic items, monsters, and more.

“The Saltmarsh series consistently ranks as one of the most popular classic D&D adventures,” said Mike Mearls, franchise creative director of D&D. “With its ties to ocean-based adventuring, it was an obvious step to augment it with additional sea-based adventures and a robust set of rules for managing a nautical campaign.”

The book is already available for pre-order on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
