Apex Legends Global Series Major

Apex Legends is the latest game to have esports events pushed out due to the ongoing spread of coronavirus. EA and Respawn have announced that the Apex Legends Global Series Major One will be postponed, with a new date and schedule to be announced “in the near future.” The event was originally set to take place in Arlington, Texas next weekend, but concerns around the spread of COVID-19 made that impossible for the group.

The announcement noted, “While we don’t have any new dates to share at this point in time, we’ll look to provide more information regarding these events and the effect on each of the Global Series as soon as we can. These decisions haven’t come easy, but given the large, global nature of these events, we believe that making these changes are in the best interest of protecting the health of the community, including competitors, attendees and staff. As we continue to monitor the situation around the Coronavirus and receive guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO), we’ll continue to evaluate and provide more updates as it relates to all of EA’s Competitive Gaming events.”

Apex Legends is not the only esport to be affected by COVID-19 by a long shot. Psyonix cancelled the upcoming Rocket League Season 9 World Championship live event, which was set to take place in Dallas from April 24th through the 26th. And Blizzard has not only restructured the upcoming Hearthstone Masters Tour Los Angeles to be online only, they have had to cancel several Homestands for Overwatch League’s 2020 season which were set to take place in China and Korea.

EA did note that the Apex Legends Online Tournament Two will still take place on March 21st through the 23rd, which is an online open-access tournament which will see teams qualify for the GLL Apex Legends LAN event later in the year. The event was previously postponed due to EA and Respawn changing the rules for the Online Tournament Two. They have also canceled several upcoming FIFA 20 Global Series events, as you can see via the link in the below tweet.
