In an interview with Le Monde, Ubisoft chief creative officer Serge Hascoet hinted that the next Assassin’s Creed game may not have a campaign mode.

He said: “The game is becoming less important. What interests me is to make worlds that are interesting to me, even as a tourist …I don’t want the player to go through a story created by someone. We have games like that still, but I ask more and more that we let the player write their own story — that they set themselves a long-term goal, identify the opportunities that are open to them and choose not to follow a path that was decided for them.

This doesn’t mean that the next game won’t have any kind of a main story, but it seems Hascoet would rather give more of an open world feel and let players have more freedom. The next game in the series is set to arrive in 2017. Hascoet said the developers “have created a system in which what I do doesn’t just affect the moment, but the long term as well. My actions will change the world.”
