Top 8 E3 Predictions – The Last of Us 2, Mega Man X9, More

June 4, 2019 | Posted by Marc Morrison

Welcome all to another edition of The 8 Ball! Sorry for the unscheduled break last week, but with the holiday going on, I got home too late for me to actually toss up a column. But this week is good to come back since it’s the week before E3. You’ll find below a list of my predictions, some of which are obvious (if not leaked already), and some are just things I wish would happen. Let’s begin:

#8: Watch Dogs 3 Announced

This is pretty confirmed already but I expect a full Watch Dogs 3 announcement. The rumors for the game so far is that it’s going to take place in London with far less of an emphasis on gameplay as the other two games. This either means knife crime is going to play a bigger role (it is the UK, after all), or that gadgets will be more important. I thought Watch Dogs 2 was a marked improvement over the first game and it’d be nice to see the franchise going further in that direction.

#7: Mega Man X9

It’s been 15 years since the last Mega Man X game came out. In that time, 3 Mega Man games, 9, 10 and 11, have been released to decent reviews, particularly Mega Man 11. Why not make another Mega Man X game, especially with the two X Legacy Collection games reminding people about the franchise? I’d actually like to see if they made a Mega Man X8 direction and did the 2.5D thing again. You can also ditch Axl, I don’t think anyone would particularly mind.

#6: Ratchet & Clank 2

This one I don’t see happening, which is really a shame. That 2016 Ratchet & Clank game *did* do well, right? I know the film was a bomb, but the game did sell well, right? Why not announce a new Ratchet & Clank game, especially for the new system? Actually, the PS4 Ratchet and Clank game was the only one in the franchise I liked, so if they made another game in the same vein, I would be really happy.

#5: Persona 5 Royal Special Edition

I expect a few more details will be announced for Persona 5 Royal during a conference or just with a press release. If they do talk about it, I expect more details on the new characters or improvements over the baseline Persona 5 game. The thing I want them to spill though is the (expected) Persona 5 Royal Special Edition. The big box version of the game that comes with a soundtrack CD, steelbook case, figurine or plushie, etc. I want them to announce it early so I can pre-order it and get it done with. That’s not too much to ask.

#4: Metroid Prime 4 Shown

I know Nintendo has had a rough track record with Metroid Prime 4 but they still seem to be working on it. Well, Retro is working on it after having taken it from Bandai Namco. I don’t expect some 10 minute long trailer but even a minute or two would help assuage people’s fears about this game. Plus, it’s been SUCH a long time since the last new and original Metroid game.

#3: The Last of Us 2 Release Date

As far as this console generation goes, Sony only has about 2 or 3 “big” games left to release. One of them is Ghost of Tsushima, another is Death Standing and the third is The Last of Us 2. Much like when the first Last of Us released, I think Last of Us 2 will be capping off point for the PS4. They’ve done this before with the PS3 (Last of Us 1) and PS2 (God of War 2). I think they’ll announce the release date for The Last of Us 2 which will segue into whenever the PS5 is getting ready to hit store shelves.

#2: Splinter Cell

At this point, if Ubisoft doesn’t announce a Splinter Cell game, they are just trolling the fandom. The last Splinter Cell game was Blacklist, which was superb, but that came out in 2013. And unlike other franchises, there hasn’t been an HD re-release of old Splinter Cell or some sort of game compilation to the modern consoles. They might be backward compatible but it’s not the same thing. After Blacklist, I actually grew to care/like the franchise so I badly want to see it return.

#1: Xbox 4 Revealed

This is the second most obvious prediction, aside from the Watch Dogs one that leaked as I was writing this column. I say it’s obvious for two reasons: 1. Microsoft is the only one of the “big three” to actually have a booth/press conference for the show. And 2. How they want to pivot back to what the Xbox 360 did. One reason the Xbox 360 did well, initially, was because it was the first one on the market by quite a bit of time. Xbox 360 launched in Nov. 2005 while the PS3 was Nov. 2006. Also, the 360 was miles ahead of what the PS3 was, in terms of online service, a digital storefront and XBLA games. I’m not going to suggest that the new Xbox is going to be as groundbreaking as the 360 was but I think Microsoft is really going to try to get out ahead and regain all the lost market share they’ve had. Bonus points if the new Xbox is called something really stupid like “Xbox 6” or something to try and compete in a dumb name system. Or if they get The Rock to come back, like in the above trailer.
