Pound For Pound

1) Daniel Cormier (22-1, 1 NC)

Birthday: March 20, 1979

Height: 5’9

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Derrick Lewis – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 230 – November 3, 2018

– vs. Stipe Miocic – Win via KO (punches) – UFC 226 – July 7, 2018

– vs. Volkan Oezdemir – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 220 – January 20, 2018

– vs. Jon Jones – No Contest (overturned) – UFC 214 – July 29, 2017

– vs. Anthony Johnson – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 210 – April 8, 2017

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

2) Khabib Nurmagomedov (27-0)

Height: 5’10

Birthday: September 20, 1988

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Conor McGregor – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 229 – October 6, 2018

– vs. Al Iaquinta – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 223 – April 7, 2018

– vs. Edson Barboza – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 219 – December 30, 2017

– vs. Michael Johnson – Win via submission (kimura) – UFC 205 – November 12, 2016

– vs. Darrell Horcher – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC on Fox: Teixeira vs. Evans – April 16, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: Khabib is something no other fighter on this list can boast about: undefeated. In 2018, he had been scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson and then Max Holloway, but unfortunately both fights fell apart in the spring. As a result, he fought Al Iaquinta and won the decision. At UFC 229, he became the UFC lightweight champion by choking out Conor McGregor. He is still dealing with the aftermath of his actions following that fight and seems willing to take this time to do other things before he jumps back in the cage. Plus, who becomes his top contender? Ferguson? Poirier? McGregor?

3) Tyron Woodley (19-3-1)

Height: 5’9

Birthday: April 17, 1982

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Darren Till – Win via submission (D’Arce choke) – UFC 228 – September 8, 2018

– vs. Demian Maia – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 214 – July 29, 2017

– vs. Stephen Thompson – Win via decision (split) – UFC 209: Woodley vs. Thompson 2 – March 4, 2017

– vs. Stephen Thompson – Draw via decision – UFC 205 – November 12, 2016

– vs. Robbie Lawler – Win via KO (punch) – UFC 201: Lawler vs. Woodley – July 30, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: One day, reports come out that say Woodley will defend his welterweight title against Colby Covington. Then, another day comes and those reports change to say he will be fighting Kamaru Usman. What is clear is that Woodley is not fighting anytime soon, unless that changes, too. Tyron only fought once this year but demolished stud Darren Till. Perhaps no other champion in the UFC has as big a target on their back like Woodley does (whether it’s a UFC-imposed target or from top challengers), but he remains one of the most stable fighters in the sport (whether their success in the cage or as a broadcaster on FOX this past year).

4) Max Holloway (20-3)

Height: 5’11

Birthday: December 4, 1991

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Brian Ortega – Win via TKO (doctor stoppage) – UFC 231 – December 8, 2018

– vs. Jose Aldo – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 218 – December 2, 2017

– vs. Jose Aldo – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 212 – June 3, 2017

– vs. Anthony Pettis – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 206: Holloway vs. Pettis – December 10, 2016

– vs. Ricardo Lamas – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 199: Rockhold vs. Bisping – June 4, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: Holloway had a rough year that saw him pulled from a main event and then face a weird turn of events when he appeared to be experiencing head trauma when doing media appearances. He underwent extensive testing, came back healthy and looked as good as he ever has at UFC 231 earlier this month when he battered Brian Ortega. Max has many people believe he’s the best pound for pound fighter in the sport and you cannot really argue much against him (as much as you give credit to other fighters). 2019 should prove to be an exciting time for the sport as it concerns Max Holloway because MMA is best when amazing fighters are in their physical prime.

5) T.J. Dillashaw (16-3)

Height: 5’6

Birthday: February 7, 1986

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Cody Garbrandt – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 227 – August 4, 2018

– vs. Cody Garbrandt – Win via KO (strikes) – UFC 217 – November 4, 2017

– vs. John Lineker – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 207 – December 30, 2016

– vs. Raphael Assuncao – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 200 – July 9, 2016

– vs. Dominick Cruz – Loss via decision (split) – UFC Fight Night – January 17, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Henry Cejudo – UFC on ESPN – January 19, 2019

Comment: The first main event of the UFC’s ESPN era will see bantamweight champion Dillashaw challenge flyweight champion Henry Cejudo. It’s a fight T.J. has been looking for going back at least two years, although at that time it was Demetrious Johnson he intended to fight.

6) Robert Whittaker (20-4)

Height: 6′

Birthday: December 20, 1990

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Yoel Romero – Win via decision (split) – UFC 225 – June 9, 2018

– vs. Yoel Romero – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 213 – July 8, 2017

– vs. Jacare Souza – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC on Fox – April 15, 2017

– vs. Derek Brunson – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC Fight Night – November 26, 2016

– vs. Rafael Natal – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 197: Jones vs. St. Preux – April 23, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Kelvin Gastelum – UFC 234 – February 9, 2019

7) Gegard Mousasi (45-6-2)

Height: 6’0

Birthday: August 1, 1985

Currently Fighting With: Bellator MMA

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Rory MacDonald – Win via TKO (strikes) – Bellator 206 – September 29, 2018

– vs. Rafael Carvalho – Win via TKO (strikes) – Bellator 200 – May 25, 2018

– vs. Uriah Hall – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC Fight Night – November 19, 2016

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: Mousasi had been scheduled to defend the Bellator middleweight championship against Rafael Lovato Jr. next month but sustained a back injury recently and is unable to compete according to MMA Fighting.

8) Jon Jones (22-1, 1 NC)

Height: 6’4

Birthday: July 19, 1987

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Daniel Cormier – No Contest (originally – Win via KO (punches)) – UFC 214 – July 29, 2017

– vs. Ovince St. Preux – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 197: Jones vs. OSP – April 23, 2016

– vs. Daniel Cormier – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier – January 3, 2015

– vs. Glover Teixeira – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 172: Jones vs. Teixeira – April 26, 2014

– vs. Alexander Gustafsson – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson – September 21, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Alexander Gustafsson – UFC 232 – December 29, 2018

Comment: Six days out from his return, news broke of a a drug test earlier in the month that revealed a small amount of a banned substance, an anabolic steroid, in his system. Las Vegas was not willing to afford him a license to fight by the end of the month, as they were unable to investigate the situation to their liking. The UFC went commission shopping and found a friendly face in California. According to that state’s commission, Jones underwent a drug test and with the results fast tracked, tested clean according to the government. As such, UFC 232 is now scheduled for Los Angeles this weekend.

The UFC and USADA have no credibility when it comes to claiming either organization places a drug-free environment among their priorities.

9) “Notorious” Conor McGregor (21-4)

Height: 5’8

Birthday: July 14, 1988

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov – Loss via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 229 – October 6, 2018

– vs. Eddie Alvarez – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 205 – November 15, 2016

– Unknown

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Yuya Wakamatsu – One Championship – March 31, 2019

Comment: Confirmed days ago, Johnson (and Eddie Alvarez) will debut on the One Championship Japan card this March. It’s One’s first time in Japan and they’ll have plenty of international attention thanks to their two new signings. Wakamatsu (10-3) will be 24 by the time they fight, lost his own One Championship debut in the fall.
