Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

Comment: Months after Conor McGregor launched a metal dolly at a bus, injuring a group of fighters, any hope of a simple return against Khabib Nurmagomedov were dashed Saturday night following their four-round battle. Khabib had just submitted McGregor with a neck crank when he turned his sights to McGregor’s corner, specifically jiu-jitsu coach and Bellator fighter Dillon Danis in particular.

Khabib pushed past one Nevada Athletic Commission security person and jumped out of the cage, literally jumping at Danis as a brawl ensued. Security was not in position to stop this from happening despite the fact security was heavy with Las Vegas Metro Police hovered outside the cage. On the positive side, this very easily could have taken a horrible turn and nobody appears to have suffered any serious damage or injury (including fans) in the commotion.

With Khabib raising hell outside the cage, Conor exchanged swings with one of Khabib’s cornerman. Next, two additional men from Khabib’s corner jumped into the cage to go after McGregor. One of them, UFC fighter Zubaira Tukhugov sucker punched Conor McGregor from behind. Bad blood between those two had been stemming from Conor calling him a traitorous Chechen for his support of Khabib, a Dagestani man. Tukhogov had been giving interviews over the last week talking about wanting to fight Conor outside the cage. In the ensuing chaos, he took the opportunity to attack McGregor. Perhaps not the most intelligent decision considering he WAS scheduled to fight McGregor’s friend and teammate Artem Lobov later this month. Dana White said Saturday night he would never fight in the UFC again. Sunday on social media, Tukhugov posted a video where he gloated about taking a swing at McGregor.

The NAC is investigating what happened and will likely dole out fines and suspensions. Saturday night, they were already withholding Khabib’s $2 million purse check. If they wanted to see contrition, Khabib offered a weak apology when he spoke to the media later in the night. McGregor was not hurt by either of the two men who jumped him in the cage and posted on social media later already hyping a rematch with Nurmagomedov.

2) Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson (24-3)

Height: 5’11

Birthday: February 12, 1984

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Anthony Pettis – Win via TKO (injury) – UFC 229 – October 6, 2018

– vs. Kevin Lee – Win via submission (triangle choke) – UFC 216 – October 7, 2017

– vs. Rafael dos Anjos – Win via decision (unanimous) – TUF Finale – November 5, 2016

– vs. Lando Vanatta – Win via submission (Brabo choke) – UFC Fight Night – July 13, 2016

– vs. Edson Barboza – Win via submission (Brabo choke) – UFC TUF 22 Finale – December 11, 2015

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: Tony Ferguson looked great in his win over Anthony Pettis Saturday night. Had Pettis not suffered a broken hand, it’s likely Ferguson would have finished him regardless. Forced due to injuries of his own to be on the sidelines for nearly a year to the day, Ferguson now has 11 consecutive wins. With Khabib the undisputed champion, Ferguson healthy, would the UFC even try to book this fight for a fifth time?

3) “Notorious” Conor McGregor (21-4)

Height: 5’8

Birthday: July 14, 1988

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov – Loss via submission (neck crank) – UFC 229 – October 6, 2018

– vs. Eddie Alvarez – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 205 – November 12, 2016

– vs. Nate Diaz – Win via decision (split) – UFC 202 – August 20, 2016

– vs. Nate Diaz – Loss via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 196 – March 5, 2016

– vs. Jose Aldo – Win via KO (punch) – UFC 194: Aldo vs. McGregor – December 12, 2015

Next scheduled appearance:

– Unknown

Comment: As for the fight, McGregor was unable to launch any semblance of a sustained attack against Khabib. It was a dominant performance from Nurmagomedov (though McGregor was a 10-9 leader for round three, Khabib is the only fighter in the UFC to manhandle Conor on the ground). The undisputed champion is now 27-0 in his professional career without even a scare or narrow decision.

McGregor’s next fight will be one of the most interesting stories going into 2019. Even if he wants an immediate rematch with Khabib, the sanctioned fight did not lead you to believe a second fight right away would go much different. It would probably be more realistic for McGregor to matchup with a rematch against the winner between Nate Diaz or Dustin Poirier.

4) Dustin Poirier (24-5, 1 NC)

Height: 5’9

Birthday: January 19, 1989

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Eddie Alvarez – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC on Fox – July 28, 2018

– vs. Justin Gaethje – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC on Fox – April 14, 2018

– vs. Anthony Pettis – Win via TKO (rib injury) – UFC Fight Night – November 11, 2017

– vs. Eddie Alvarez – No Contest (illegal strikes) – UFC 211: Miocic vs. dos Santos – May 13, 2017

– vs. Jim Miller – Win via decision (split) – UFC 208 – February 11, 2017

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Nate Diaz – UFC 230 – November 3, 2018

Comment: Poirier could burst into the title picture with another great showing when he fights Nate Diaz next month at Madison Square Garden. After much back-and-forth their fight will actually happen (though I suppose we cannot say that until they step inside the cage on fight night), and in the lightweight division. Hopes of a 165-pound contest and for five rounds proved to be wasted. Nevertheless, even for three rounds, Poirier and Diaz is the fight most people who see UFC 230 will anticipate most.

Since moving back up to lightweight in 2015 (after his loss to Conor McGregor ironically), Poirier is 8-1 (1 No Contest) and has three consecutive TKO wins over Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez.

5) Nate Diaz (19-11)

Height: 6’0

Birthday: April 16, 1985

Currently Fighting With: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Conor McGregor – Loss via decision (split) – UFC 202: Diaz vs. McGregor II – August 20, 2016

– vs. Michael Johnson – Win via decision (unanimous) – UFC on Fox: dos Anjos vs. Cowboy – December 19, 2015

– vs. Rafael dos Anjos – Loss via decision (unanimous) – UFC on Fox: dos Santos vs. Miocic – December 13, 2014

– vs. Gray Maynard – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC TUF 18 Finale – November 30, 2013

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Dustin Poirier – UFC 230 – November 3, 2018
