Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night 112. I’m Robert Winfree, here for the second straight evening to provide you with updates of the action just as I see it. Thanks for being here for a somewhat rare Sunday UFC event. Tonight we’ve got a great main event as Michael Chiesa and Kevin Lee battle for a near top five spot in the stacked lightweight division, both men are on winning streaks, both have superb skills, and both are on the rise. If lightweight operated like a normal division this would likely be for a shot at the title pending the champion defending the belt against one of the top two contenders, but at the moment lightweight doesn’t operate normally so it’s just for position in the division while Conor McGregor gets a bigger payday than the UFC will pay all the fighters tonight combined. Also Johny Hendricks continues his quest to overtake Charles Oliveira and John Lineker’s two man race for most times missing weight, Hendricks now joins Lineker as the only member of that club to miss across two weight classes. More importantly he’s going to fight Time Boetsch and Hendricks could really be fighting for his job as the constant extreme weight cutting through his amateur wrestling and now MMA career seem to be catching up to him. Also BJ Penn is trying to get his first win at featherweight against Dennis Siver. This is the UFC’s first event in Oklahoma since 2009 when Nate Diaz choked out Melvin Guillard in the main event. It comes to us from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA, with Jon Anik and Dominick Cruz on commentary.

And again, because every time we must do this, the Oklahoma athletic commission hasn’t adopted the changes to the unified rules of MMA. Mostly this covers the definition of a downed opponent and language regarding scoring criteria. Oh what fun times we live in.

Before we really get going, I’m curious as to what Scott Steiner has to say about Johny Hendricks missing weight again?

Sounds about right.

Josh Stansbury is 1-1 in the UFC and coming off of a loss to Devin Clark. Stansbury is trying to get his UFC record above .500 and prove he’s got some potential in a division in desperate need of it. Jeremy Kimball lost his UFC debut and is now in the curtain jerking position, if he loses here as well he could be cut. The odds favor Stansbury at -165 against +135 for Kimball.

Light Heavyweight Bout: Jeremy Kimball (14-6, 204 lbs.) vs. Josh Stansbury (8-3, 206 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Stansbury is two inches taller and has two inches of reach advantage. Touch of gloves to get us going. Kimball circling early, Stansbury lands a stiff right hook in combination. Stansbury patiently moving forward, Kimball tries a wheel kick that glances and Stansbury dives into the clinch. Kimball lands a bit of an elbow as they break. Stansbury lands a leg kick. Kimball lands a right, Stansbury freezes, Kimball punches him over and swarms him on the mat to finish it.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Kimball for his work this evening. Slightly late stoppage there from where I sit, but that’s just me. Kimball on the mic now. He says this win his huge, he says this is what he can do and regrets elements of his UFC debut. He talks us through the finish, says he knows when guys are hurt and he never lets them recover. He says the UFC feels like home and he plans on being here for a long time before closing by saying “hi mom”.

Really nice stuff from Kimball there, after that straight right he angled appropriately and given how stunned Stansbury was he couldn’t counter or even defend himself from the follow up offense. Proper angles in MMA are key. Just a real quick programming note as well, that fight ended fast so it’ll be about 9 minutes until the next one starts, I promise I’m not asleep at my keyboard.

Tony Martin is on a two fight winning streak, the best of his UFC run, and is 3-3 with the promotion overall. Martin has only lost to higher levels of competition, Beneil Dariush for example, and if he can get to three in a row here he might be in line for another shot at that higher level and prove his continued growth as a fighter. Johnny Case is coming off of his first UFC loss, he’s 4-1 with them in total, and is trying to rebound from that set back while proving he’s an elite level lightweight. Martin is slightly favored at -130 to +100 on Case.

Lightweight Bout: Johnny Case (22-5, 156 lbs.) vs. Tony Martin (11-3, 156 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Martin is two inches taller and has an inch of reach on Case. Feinting from both men early, Case showing a little more in terms of variety. Case working lead leg kicks to the inside of the thigh and body. Martin lands a jab. They trade leg kicks. They trade rights, Martin tries to clinch but can’t quite secure it. Case working the jab well so far, lands a decent one two combination. There’s a notable speed edge for Case thus far, mostly in terms of hand speed. They trade inside leg kicks, Case still circling well so far. Case lands a leg kick, then a one two then another leg kick. Case has a good rhythm going, Martin lands a left hook then a right to the chest. Martin lands another right, he might have a read on something Case is doing. Case lands a left body kick. Stiff couple of jabs from Case land. Case lands three punches in close and avoids a clinch attempt. Martin shoots a double leg that hits the fence. Martin can’t secure the double leg and settles for the clinch. Case spins free rather quickly and misses an inside leg kick to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Case

ROUND TWO: Case trying to keep that rhythm going this round. They trade rights, Martin landed better and Case is a little wobbly. Case reaches for a single leg, Martin threatens with a choke and then pushes free. Martin lands a jab. Case lands a jab. Case lands a counter left hook, stuns Martin a bit. Case lands a leg kick. They keep splitting jabs, active lead hand work from both men. They trade in the pocket and Case lands an inside leg kick. Case lands a right and avoids the counter. Case bleeding under the right eye, by the cheekbone. Martin goads Case a bit, they trade rights again. Case lands a stiff right to the chin of Martin. Case jabs the body, Martin lands a counter right. Martin eats a right and lands a counter left hook. Martin has a read on Case here and he’s countering nicely so far with what appear to be the heavier punches. Martin lands a right then a leg kick. Martin lands a left head kick, Case fires back with a right as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Martin, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: They hug briefly to start the final round. And they immediately start throwing after. Case lands a jab, Martin fires back with one of his own. Martin blocks a high kick. They trade jabs again, Case lands a leg kick. Martin patiently moving forward, they trade rights but Case landed better in that exchange. More jabs going back and forth, these two clearly came to fight. Martin lands a right then a solid knee to the head. Case has a solid chin. Martin lands another right. Case lands an inside leg kick. They trade again, Case lands a left and Martin lands a counter right. Active jabs from both men. Martin goes for a double leg, Case tries a guillotine but that was ill advised and Martin scoops him to finish the double leg. Martin lands a couple of elbows, Martin grabs a kimura, they roll and time runs down, fortunately for Case’s arm because that kimura was tight.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Martin, 29-28 Martin overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Tony Martin via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

Really good fight there. Martin on the mic now. He puts over Case and says he feels this was a Fight of the Night. He wanted to prove he could strike with anyone and feels he proved it here as Case is an elite striker and he out struck him. He says this is the best he’s ever been, he keeps improving, and he wants the top fifteen next. No on in particular, he says he’s just hitting his prime now and wants to keep moving up.

Here’s the combo from early in the second that wobbled Case, Martin finally got a read on the trunk movement and followed him back with a solid right.

Jared Gordon is in a bit of a tight spot here, he got this shot based on performing well on Dana White’s: Lookin’ for a Fight show, a group of fighters with a mixed record at best in the UFC, and then he missed weight for this bout. Gordon hasn’t lost in two years and is one of the higher ranked lightweight/featherweight fighters from the American north east regional scene, but he’s in a near must win scenario after missing weight. Michel Quinones is making his UFC debut but hasn’t lost since 2012, he’s hoping to keep that momentum going and make a good first impression on UFC fans. Despite missing weight Gordon is the favorite here at -150 while Quinones pays out at +120.

Featherweight Bout: Jared Gordon (12-1, 149 lbs.)* vs. Michel Quinones (8-1, 145 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Quinones is an inch taller and has a significant five inches of reach on Gordon. Touch of gloves to get us going. Quinones lands a hard body kick then a leg kick but Gordon lands a right. Gordon lands another right. Gordon has a head kick blocked, these two are throwing heavy early. Quinones lands a leg kick but Gordon fires back counters. Gordon has some good pressure going, lands a left hook. Quinones lands a stiff one two then a jumping knee to the chest. Gordon gets close and tries for a single leg, he gets Quinones down and winds up in the ride position. Gordon has one hook in while sitting on a hip as Quinones is sitting on the fence. Gordon lands a few lefts, he’s trying to open up the choke. Quinones wall walks, and they break. Godon lands a body kick. Gordon lands a couple of leg kicks, he likes that as Quinones isn’t countering just yet. Quinones lands an inside leg kick. Gordon lands a bit of a left. Quinones lands a pretty good left body kick. Quinones ducks a head kick and just misses a spinning back fist. They trade rights. Quinones lands a bit of a left high kick. Gordon lands a bit of a left, Quinones was hanging out southpaw. Gordon lands a couple of leg kicks as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Gordon

ROUND TWO: Touch of gloves for the second round. They both miss in the pocket, Quinones blocks a high kick. Gordon just avoids a spinning back kick. Gordon pushes forward, lands a four punch combination. Gordon grabs a single leg, Quinones tries a guillotine but Gordon pulls his head free and finishes the single leg into half guard. Gordon nearly gets mount, Quinones hip escapes to full guard and Gordon passes to half guard again. Gordon landing some decent blows from top position, and a few knees to the body as well. Gordon lands a right. Another right, Quinones back up but Gordon just shoves him into the fence and lands rights then a knee before Quinones gets free. Gordon lands a left and tries a double leg but Quinones defends this one. Gordon lands a right and they clinch again, Gordon hits a knee tap and is in half guard again. Rights from Gordon, he’s swarming Quinones now. Gordon to a near mounted crucifix, Quinones to full guard but he’s still getting hammered on. Gordon stands, lands lefts and moves to the ride then side control. Quinones is getting overwhelmed at every turn here. Gordon still landing from the ride and the ref has seen enough.

Solid stuff from Gordon there, he really came on strong in the second round. Gordon gets an interview now. He apologizes to everyone for missing weight but notes the adjustments he needs to make going forward. He thanks the crowd, they cheer that, and he says he’s an example of what you can do if you put your best foot forward. He says he’s going to be UFC champion eventually, he knows that’s true it’ll just take time for it to happen. He says fighting is fun, he’s been in some precarious positions in his life and fighting is just fun. He jokes that he’ll feel the full force of this moment later tonight when he’s laying in bed all beat up.

Here’s the finish, none of the really fun stuff like Gordon constantly stripping away the base of Quinones or the full on schoolyard shove into the fence, but some relentless offense from Gordon at the end there.

Devin Powell lost his UFC debut and a six fight winning streak along with it, he’s trying to rebound from that setback here and prove he’s got what it takes to compete in the UFC. Darrell Horcher lost his UFC debut when he stepped in on short notice to take on Khabib Nurmagomedov and subsequently got run over, but tonight with a full camp and slightly more appropriate level of competition he’s trying to show his skills to the UFC audience. Horcher is a moderate favorite at -450 while Powell’s +325 payout has to be tempting those who play underdogs.

Lightweight Bout: Darrell Horcher (12-2, 155 lbs.) vs. Devin Powell (8-2, 155 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Powell is two inches taller and has three inches of reach on Horcher. Touch of gloves, and Horcher is fighting southpaw. Powell misses a few lead leg kicks. Horcher lands a couple of short lefts after catching a kick. Powell lands an inside leg kick. Powell has some serious lead leg dexterity going so far. Powell lands a bit of a right then a leg kick. Horcher lands a straight left. Powell lands a leg kick, Horcher is a little reliant on the left thus far. Horcher lands a decent left. They clinch up, Powell hits a trip but Horcher rolls through and gets on top in half guard. Horcher lands a few short lefts. Horcher has some good control going, lands a few short elbows. Horcher blocks a kimura attempt but Powell is able to get butterfly guard. Horcher rides through a roll attempt and lands a few blows as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Horcher

ROUND TWO: Touch of gloves for the second round. Powell lands a bit of a side kick to the face then a leg kick. Powell with a few more leg kicks, he’s staying active but there’s a real question as to his efficacy so far. They clinch up and trade then break. Horcher lands a left that wobbles Powell, another drops him to a knee, Horcher grabs a standing guillotine attempt and Powell has to fight through it. Horcher spins him into the fence. Powell is bleeding from the nose, Horcher lands an uppercut as they break then a right and Powell slips to the mat again. Horcher on top in guard and lands an elbow. Horcher trying to get a handcuff going with his right to set up lefts. Powell gets his arm back without much difficulty. Horcher lands a few lefts then passes to half guard. Horcher lands some short rights and an elbow. Powell gets guard again but Horcher passes quickly and is in the ride position while Powell holds a double wrist lock as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Horcher, arguable 10-8, 20-18 Horcher overall

ROUND THREE: They hug to start the final round. Powell lands a bit of a leg kick. Powell lands a body kick then an inside leg kick that takes Horcher to a knee for a second. Horcher lands a bit of a counter left. Horcher with another straight left. Horcher lands a few low leg kicks. Horcher with another left, Powell lands an inside leg kick. Powell tries a single leg, Horcher defending until the hit the fence. They spin quickly, Horcher gets Powell on the fence. Horcher tries a single leg, switches to a double leg and gets Powell down but Powell has an anaconda choke, but he can’t spin because of the fence so uses it to roll through into top position. Powell after a d’arce choke now, might be switching to more of a guillotine. Powell lands a few elbows but had to give up the grip for that. Horcher trying to stand, he’s also after a single leg from his seat. Powell tries to mount, gets stuck in half guard though. Horcher up and Powell grabs a standing guillotine. Horcher able to break a bit of the grip and he settles for the clinch. Horcher holding on in the clinch as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Powell, 29-28 Horcher overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Darrell Horcher via split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)

Really unsure which of the first two rounds could have gone to Powell. Horcher on the mic now. He apologizes for the fight not being that exciting and puts over Powell as tough. He references his motorcycle accident, says he just had to fight smart and is a little surprised that he didn’t get the first two rounds on all the cards. He says the chokes weren’t terribly tight but he knew they were there. He thanks his wife for all of her support and points to her in the crowd. He thanks his surgeon and physical therapist for getting him back into physical shape. He says this feels good, especially relative to where he came from. Dominick Cruz on commentary buries the split decision, he felt Horcher won all three rounds. I thought Powell had taken the third but the principle is the same.

Here’s some highlights from that fight for you guys.

Also for those unfamiliar with the injuries Horcher suffered in that crash here’s a list. And thirteen months later he’s winning the UFC. Pretty crazy.

Carla Esparza was the first UFC women’s strawweight champion, but she was unable to get a single successful title defense as she ran into the buzz saw that is Joanna Jedrzejczyk. She’s 1-1 since losing the belt and is coming off of a loss to Randa Markos, if she wants to possibly get another shot at the belt she can’t afford a two fight losing streak here. Maryna Moroz is 3-1 overall in the UFC and on a two fight winning streak, if she can take out a former champion like Esparza she could find herself in the title picture sooner rather than later. Esparza is the favorite here at -230 to +180 for Moroz.

Strawweight Bout: #8 Carla Esparza (11-4, 116 lbs.) vs. #10 Maryna Moroz (8-1, 115 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Moroz is six inches taller and has four inches of reach on Esparza. Circling to start, Esparza shows the double jab. Moroz showing some angles here, she’s clearly mindful of the takedown game of Esparza. Esparza lands a bit of a right. Moroz kind of shadow boxing. Esparza lands a bit of a left as she rushes forward. Moroz is trying to angle and counter. Moroz lands a right uppercut. Moroz lands a jab. Esparza trying to stay busy with punches towards a takedown then back to punches. Esparza tries a low single leg, Moroz defends. Moroz lands a right then a left as Esparza tried to bull rush. Esparza hits a double leg but Moroz grabbed a guillotine. Moroz holding the guillotine but Esparza is hand fighting and out of most of the danger. Moroz has a body triangle from the bottom and is still after that choke. Moroz is turned on the wrong hip to really finish this and Esparza pulls her head free. They trade some short elbows. They’re just gonna kill time for the last fifteen seconds or so.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Esparza

ROUND TWO: They show some lead hand work again to start the round. Moroz lands a bit of a left. Esparza lands a glancing superman punch. Esparza bulling forward in bursts, lands another superman punch as well. Moroz lands a right. Moroz lands another right. Moroz lands an uppercut, Esparza tries a single leg but Moroz defends and separates. Moroz lands a bit of a left, she’s coming forward now and trying not to commit too much of her weight forward. Esparza hits a bit of a single leg, has to really drive to finish it but Moroz gets to the fence and is back up immediately. Esparza just holding the clinch, Moroz lands on the end of a right as they break. Moroz blocks a single leg attempt. Moroz lands a left after having an uppercut stuffed. Esparza ducks a couple of punches and hits a double leg into the guard of Moroz. Moroz lands a few elbows to the shoulder. Moroz landing a few elbows from her back. Moroz to the fence looking to wall walk, Esparza lands a few lefts as she does so and they separate. Moroz lands a left, blocks a takedown attempt as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Moroz, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Moroz lands a right to start things off here in the third. Moroz lands a front kick but Esparza catches it, spins her down but Moroz back to her feet almost immediately. Esparza lands that blind overhand right. Moroz blocks a takedown attempt. Moroz lands an uppercut, Esparza tries a takedown, blocked but Esparza lands a low blow and we’ve got time. Moroz walks it off quickly and we’re back to fighting. They trade rights. Moroz starting to turn up the offense. Esparza hits a takedown into the guard of Moroz. They stall out immediately and the ref warns them. Esparza lands a few shoulder strikes and the ref stands them up. Moroz gives up a takedown, shockingly bad once Esparza turned the corner, and she’s on her back again. Esparza lands a few punches and stands, Moroz kicking her off and regains her feet. Esparza hits another double leg and holds the legs as time runs down.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Esparza, 29-28 Esparza overall

Nice to see Moroz getting the second reliably, Esparaz was more lay and pray in that round. No interview though.

Vitor Miranda is 3-2 overall in the UFC but is coming off of a loss to Chris Camozzi, he’s trying to avoid the first losing streak of his professional career as well as keep his UFC record above .500. Marvin Vettori is 1-1 in the UFC and coming off of a loss to Antonio Carlos Junior, he’s also trying to avoid what would be his first professional losing streak. Vettori is a notable favorite at -340 against a +260 payout on Miranda.

Middleweight Bout: Vitor Miranda (12-5, 186 lbs.) vs. Marvin Vettori (11-3, 185 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Miranda is an inch taller and has three inches of reach on Vettori. Miranda is also fifteen years older. They touch gloves, Vettori fighting southpaw. Vettori lands a couple of leg kicks while backing Miranda towards the fence. Vettori lands a body kick. Miranda lands a bit of a high kick. Vettori pushing forward, Miranda lands an inside leg kick. Vettori lands a stepping knee to the body. Miranda lands an inside leg kick. Vettori still pushing forward, he’s got a solid pace going and is trying to slowly overwhelm Miranda’s defense. Vettori has a left blocked, Miranda lands a body kick. Vettori has a high kick blocked, Mirada has one blocked as well. Vettori lands a bit of a left, he’s got the edge in hand speed but Miranda is hanging in there. Vettori lands a combiantion and a bit of a jumping knee before clinching Mirada on the cage. Vettori misses a spinning elbow as they break. Miranda has a head kick caught and Vettori takes him down. Vettori into the ride position as Mirada sits on the fence. Vettori moves around to the front, he grabs a cradle position but Vettori breaks it and stands up. Miranda lands an inside leg kick then a front kick to the body. Miranda lands a body kick but Vettori lands a counter one two. They stare away the last ten seconds.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Vettori

ROUND TWO: Touch of gloves for the second round. They’re both still blocking most of the punches, Vettori lands a body kick. Vettori lands a couple of leg kicks then has a high kick blocked. Miranda lands an inside leg kick. Vettori is letting up a bit here, he lands a bit of a right uppercut. Vettori tries a double leg, Miranda is able to shake him off. Vettori lands a body kick. Vettori lands a leg kick but this is getting sloppy in a hurry here. Miranda lands a heavy leg kick then another. Miranda goes southpaw and lands a few hard leg kicks. They clinch up, Miranda spins Vettori into the fence. They jockey for position for a bit, Vettori holding a body lock and spins to a rear waist lock. Miranda sinks holding a double wrist lock, but he can’t hit the roll and Vettori settles into top position. Vettori to half guard now. Miranda kicks Vettori off after eating a few short elbows. Miranda lands a body kick. Vettori misses a kick, Miranda lands a leg kick but gets taken down just as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Vettori but a closer round, 20-18 Vettori overall

ROUND THREE: Miranda moving forward, Vettori lands a bit of a left. They trade body kicks. Miranda lands a bit of a right. Miranda lands a bit of a right, Vettori might be fading here. They trade power hands, Vettori landed better though. Miranda lands to the body then lands a leg kick. Vettori lands a couple of punches then avoids a hook. Miranda lands a knee to the body, then another one. Miranda with some inside leg kicks then a body kick. Miranda with the forward pressure this round, Vettori kind of coasting on what he believes to be a lead. Miranda lands another leg kick. Miranda lands a right to the body. Vettori lands a straight left then a short right in close. Miranda lands a right elbow. Both guys are fatigued now. Miranda lands a leg kick then tries a single leg, can’t complete it and they wind up standing again. Vettori lands a jab cross jab then tries a double leg that stalls out on the fence in the clinch. Vettori is able to push Miranda to the mat with a body lock and lands in an empty half guard. Miranda steps over towards mount but Miranda gets half guard immediately. Vettori just holds top position as the clock runs down.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Vettori, 30-27 Vettori overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Marvin Vettori via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x2)

Miranda could have taken either the second or third really. No interview as that was largely pedestrian and forgettable.

Clay Guida is on his fourth two fight losing streak of his UFC run, which in all fairness stretches back to 2006. Guida hasn’t fought in over a year and is moving back to lightweight after basically washing out at featherweight while hoping to avoid the first three fight skid of his career and proving he still has value to the UFC at this point. Erik Koch is 2-1 since moving up to lightweight, he’s coming off of a win but hasn’t fought in over a year as well, a win over Guida would likely be the most recognizable win on his record and could get him to move up in competition at lightweight. Guida’s recent skid contributes to Koch’s -350 favorite status while Guida’s comeback stands at +265.

Lightweight Bout: Clay Guida (32-17, 156 lbs.) vs. Erik Koch (15-4, 155 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Koch is three inches taller but has just an inch and a half of reach on Guida. Koch fighting southpaw. Guida circling on the outside early. Both men showing the jab early, range finding mostly. Koch lands a bit of a left, Guida lands a wild right. Koch lands a bit of a left and avoids the wild right counter. Koch blocks a high kick. Koch lands a bit of a jab. Koch lands a straight left. Guida tries a double leg, Koch defending against the fence so far. Guida tries to elevate, winds up holding a single leg. Guida just holding on, not doing much so far. Guida hits a scorpion kick, nothing on it but it was cool looking. Guida hits the single, Koch up and uses a standing guillotine to spin Guida into the fence. Koch lands a knee to the body. Guida tries another single leg, Koch defending again. Koch gets free and gets back to the center of the cage. Guida avoids a high kick. Koch lands a left that wobbles Guida a bit, they trade in the clinch as the round ends.

ROUND TWO: Guida lands a bit of a right as he starts stalking forward. They trade power hand punches, Guida landed better and gets a double leg into the guard of Koch. Koch tries to get his legs in play, Guida to side control. Guida has a bit of a cradle going and secures side control. Guida passes to full mount. Guida lands a bit of an elbow. Guida with some body work. Guida moves for an arm triangle, can’t get the head position and so bails on it. Guida lands some arm punches, finally gets posture and throws some arm punches that are totally blocked. They just hang out in that spot as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Guida, possible 10-8, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Koch showing the lead hand, just misses a left. Koch just misses a high kick. Koch just misses another high kick. Guida tries a single leg, stalls out on the fence in the clinch. Guida drops for a single leg, tries that scorpion kick again just to pop the crowd. Guida holding the single leg, Koch trying to limp leg out of it. Guida finally gets the elevated takedown and gets to side control. Guida towards full mount again, more like quarter guard. Koch just holding on, not doing much to escape the position as Guida moves to full mount. Guida lands a few short punches. Koch just holding on and Guida can’t get his posture so is holding mount and landing short blows. Guida postures finally, and gives it up voluntarily. Guida postures again, Koch gets his legs in play enough to stall things out, and the clock winds down there.

BJ Penn is a legend of the sport with a list of accolades that has rarely been equaled or surpassed, but he’s visibly near the end of his career at this point. Penn hasn’t won a fight since beating Matt Hughes way back in 2010 and has yet to win at featherweight, he’s 0-2 at 145 with losses to Frankie Edgar and Yair Rodriguez, and is on an overall four fight losing streak. If Penn can’t win here there should be a serious discussion had about the ethical nature of letting him compete at this level. Dennis Siver isn’t in the best spot career wise either, he’s on a two fight losing streak and hasn’t fought in two years. Siver needs this win to keep his spot on the roster, but also a win over Penn would be the biggest win of his career in terms of name value. Siver is a slight favorite here at -170 to +140 on Penn.

Featherweight Bout: B.J. Penn (16-11-2, 146 lbs.) vs. Dennis Siver (22-11 1 NC, 146 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Penn is two and a half inches taller while they have the same reach. Touch of gloves to get us going. Penn moving forward early, Siver takes his legs with an inside leg kick. Siver working a left front kick to the body to keep distance. Penn lands a jab. Siver lands a leg kick. They clinch up, Siver tries for a single leg that stalls on the fence. They break without incident. Siver lands a front kick to the face. Siver lands a leg kick after eating a jab. They trade rights in close. They clinch up again, Penn has Siver on the fence. Penn lands a few knees, Siver pushes free. Penn lands a jab. Siver lands a stiff left then a glancing leg kick. Siver lands a bit of a combination. Siver lands a spinning back kick to the body. Siver lands a left that knocks the mouthpiece from Penn. Siver lands a right then an inside leg kick. Penn is a little wobbled from that right. Siver lands a left. Siver lands an inside leg kick. Penn circling but his offense is intermittent and only borderline effective. Siver lands a leg kick. Siver misses a right and has a high kick blocked. Siver lands an inside leg kick. Penn lands a bit of a right. Siver lands a right. Siver lands a front kick to the face and shoulder of Penn. Siver lands a leg kick. Siver avoids a right and misses some counters. Penn lands a jab. Siver lands a bit of a leg kick. They trade rights and Siver lands a bit of a jab. Siver has a head kick just blocked. Siver lands a glancing spinning back kick to the body. Penn lands a right that drops Siver, Penn on top looking to finish. Penn in side control. Penn lands a few knees to the body. Penn backing up here, Siver pressuring. They trade jabs. Siver lands a right then a leg kick. Siver just misses a left high kick. Siver lands a jab. Penn checks a leg kick. Siver just misses a wheel kick. Siver lands a jab then an inside leg kick. Siver lands a spinning back kick to the body. Siver lands a leg kick then a jab. Siver just misses another head kick. Siver lands a right, Penn just circling along the fence trying to avoid damage. Siver lands a leg kick then they trade a few jabs. Siver lands another leg kick, Penn just backing up and sucking wind. Siver seriously let Penn off of the hook in that third round, Penn was just taking abuse and the ref was ready to stop it after a prolonged exchange if necessary. Whoever gave Penn that first round needs to go, I mean really it’s just not really a defensible position. Siver on the mic now. He feels good physically, thanks his fans for flying out and thanks Penn for the fight. He says the knockdown in the second wasn’t too bad and he was off balance as well but he didn’t feel rocked in the least. He says the fight was an honor as Penn is a legend and winning against him was the biggest win of his career.

Tim Means is coming off of a loss to Alex Oliveira, and a No Contest with Oliveira before that which prompted the rematch. Means needs to rebound from that loss here to get back on track in the UFC. Alex Garcia is coming off of a win and is looking for his first UFC winning streak since 2014, plus knocking off a veteran like Means could get him a step up in competition next. Means is the favorite at -325 while Garcia’s comeback pays at +250.

Welterweight Bout: Alex Garcia (14-3, 171 lbs.) vs. Tim Means (28-6-1 1 NC, 171 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Means is five inches taller but has just three inches of reach on Garcia. Means fighting southpaw. Garcia showing the jab early, lands a decent left hook. Means lands a straight left. Means lands a left to the body. Garcia lands an uppercut in close. Garcia lands a series of hard punches, Means recovers and gets up from a takedown and they’re clinched on the fence. Garcia holding a body lock, Means spins him and lands a knee to the body before separating. Means lands a leg kick. Garcia just falls short with a right. Garcia lands a bit of a right after eating a left, Garcia falling a little short with his offense, needs to be about half an inch or so closer. Means lands a left to the body. Garcia lands a couple of left hooks. Means lands a jab. Means lands another left to the body. Garcia tries some aborted spinning attack to close out the round.

ROUND TWO: Touch of gloves for the second round. Means lands a leg kick. Means lands a counter right hook. Means lands another leg kick. Garcia is looping his punches a bit too much and Means is landing short straight counters. Means with another straight left to the body. Garcia grabs a single leg, drives Means into the fence and tries to switch for a double leg. Means fights for under hooks, Garcia lands a right as they break. Means goes to the body again with a left. Means lands a straight left. Means lands another straight left, Garcia is backing up now. Means lands a left to the body. Means lands another straight left, Garcia is backing up again. Means goes to the body yet again then lands a front kick to the body. Means blocks a head kick. Garcia misses a spinning back fist. Means blocks a couple of kicks, lands a bit of a right hook as the round ends.

ROUND THREE: Touch of gloves for the final round. Garcia fails on a single leg attempt. Garcia lands a bit of a right. Means lands a straight left, Garcia hits a double leg but Means whizzers out of it and lands a left as they regain their feet. Means lands another left to the body. Means lands a left. Means has a much better feel for the distance here, he’s landing to the body and baiting looping punches from Garcia that he can counter or just slip. Means lands another short straight left. Means to the body then a left to the head. Garcia lands a bit of a left, eats a straight left for his trouble. Means lands a short left, Garcia isn’t adjusting to Means throwing straight punches. Garcia lands a body kick. Garcia lands a bit of a left. Means lands a leg kick, then another one. Garcia misses a right and a spinning back fist. Means lands a body kick. Means ducks under a left hook. Garcia misses a spinning attack and eats a hopping knee to the chest as the last real action of the fight.

That went about as expected, no interview for Means. Here’s some highlights, note the straight punches from Means, they split the guard and get to the target sooner than the looping ones Garcia was throwing. Foot position was key as well, Cruz gave some excellent commentary on that aspect, Means constantly found the lane for his straight left.

Joachim Christensen is just 1-2 in the UFC with losses to Henrique da Silva and Gadzhimurad Antigulov, he’s trying to get his UFC record back to even and avoid the first losing streak of his professional career. Dominick Reyes took this fight on short notice but is undefeated and looking to make a big first impression to the UFC audience here. The debuting Reyes is a -350 favorite against a +265 comeback on Christensen.

Light Heavyweight Bout: Joachim Christensen (14-5, 206 lbs.) vs. Dominick Reyes (6-0, 205 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Reyes is an inch taller and has an inch of reach on Christensen. Biggest difference is age, Christensen is eleven years older. Reyes fighting southpaw, and opens with a solid body kick. Inside leg kick from Reyes then a straight left, Christensen is backing up and in trouble. Reyes lands one straight left, Christensen drops like a sack of potatoes, he lands a couple of more lefts before the ref stops it but man oh man that was vicious.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Reyes for his work this evening. Reyes on the mic after that impressive debut. He says he couldn’t have dreamed this moment any better and thanks Christ for the strength. He thanks the fans for their support, and says this was everything he ever dreamed of and feels at home in the UFC. He talks us through the finish, he knew it was over before the ref stepped in and remarks about the crazy nature of adrenaline. Asked what’s next he plans on resting up and healing up then seeing what comes his way.

Seriously guys, this is why you throw straight punches rather than looping ones.

Felice Herrig is on a two fight winning streak and is looking to keep that momentum going, if she can get to three in a row she might find her name in the title picture given the general state of flux among the contenders at strawweight. Justine Kish is undefeated and is 2-0 in the UFC, she’s looking to keep that momentum going and crack the official rankings with a win here. Kish is favored to do just that at -150 to +120 for Herrig.

Strawweight Bout: #13 Felice Herrig (12-6, 115 lbs.) vs. Justine Kish (6-0, 116 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Kish is an inch taller while Herrig has an inch of reach on her. Herrig lands a body kick, Kish returns it. They clinch up, Kish tries the headlock takedown, a stupid takedown as evidenced by Herrig slipping out and getting the back with both hooks in. Also it’s not a women’s MMA fight without that stupid headlock take over. Kish back up and they’re clinched again. Herrig holding Kish on the fence, Kish spins her and they start working for takedowns. Herrig hits a trip, nearly gives up an armbar but defends it and is on top of Kish against the fence. Herrig has moved into half guard and Kish is looking to wall walk. Kish to her knees, Herrig slips out and gets the back with one hook in. Herrig lands a few rights. Kish goes to her back and has half guard again. Herrig passes to full mount. Herrig lands some offense, Kish able to escape but Herrig has the back again. Cruz on commentary explaining the mistakes Kish is making and why Herrig is able to hold dominant position. Herrig to mount again, she’s floating from mount to back mount. Kish tries to slide out the back door, and gets on top in half guard, now side control. Herrig to her knees then feet, Kish lands a knee in the clinch and Herrig lands a right. Herrig ducks a right, hits a double leg but gets rolled and Kish lands on top. Kish lands a few elbows from half guard. Kish lands another elbow, Herrig tries to hit a single leg, Kish back up and they end the round in the clinch with Kish holding a standing guillotine.

ROUND TWO: Kish lands a leg kick, and eats a bit of a right. Kish lands another leg kick. Kish lands a knee to the body from a brief clinch. Kish lands a body kick, eats a bit of a left hook. They trade rights, Herrig lands a couple of left hooks as well. Kish lands a right and they trade left hooks. Kish lands another right and a left hook, that combination is working for Kish so far. Herrig eats a right and lands another counter left hook. They trade left hooks again. Kish lands a knee to the body. Kish lands a body kick. They clinch again, Kish rag dolls Herrig a bit. Kish lands a hard right to the body. Herrig is slowing down a bit here. They clinch again, Kish lands an elbow and Herrig fights for double under hooks. Herrig leans and tips Kish over and lands in half guard. Herrig trying to pass, can’t quite complete it though. Kish trying to bridge but has no under hook to help it. Herrig to side control, then gets the back as Kish rolls. Kish turns into Herrig and winds up in guard. Kish lands some rights, Herrig tries an armbar but not much there and Kish passes to side control. Kish to knee on belly, lands three punches and the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Kish, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Herrig sucking some wind to start the third. Kish lands a body kick and they split rights. Kish lands a left hook. Kish lands a couple of leg kicks, Herrig bulls into a double leg against the fence. Kish looking to wall walk, Herrig fights to keep her down in half guard. Herrig passes to mount. Kish spins to her knees, Herrig has the back and is looking for the choke. Herrig lands a couple of weak lefts, Kish rolls and gets half guard. Kish bridges, gives up her back but stands, Herrig into the backpack and has the choke. Kish trying to hand fight, Herrig pulls her back to the mat and keeps squeezing the choke. Kish fights through the choke and has given up mount. I don’t know how she got through that, Herrig in side control now. Kish looking to bridge, Herrig passes to mount again. Herrig lands some rights. Herrig tries elbows, Kish trying to roll for half guard. Herrig to side control again. Kish bridges again, but again gets her back taken for the effort. Herrig lands some punches. Kish tries for and nearly gets a reversal, Herrig holds the back though as the round ends.

Herrig on the mic now. She says that’s three in a row so the UFC should recognize. She puts over Kish saying she didn’t really want to fight her but she wouldn’t turn down the fight either. She says the fight was tough and wants to keep getting better. She took out two undefeated fighters in her last two fights and wants to keep moving up. She talks about having to work for everything in this fight, puts over her coaches and feels confident anywhere the fight goes. Asked who’s next she says the UFC never gives her who she wants when she calls someone out so she’ll just wait for the next call.

Someone with more grappling acumen than I will have to explain how Kish escaped this choke.

Time Boetsch just had a two fight winning streak snapped when he was run over by top contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, but he could get back on track at middleweight tonight. Boetsch really does need the win here as he’s just 2-4 in his last six fights in a stretch that includes a three fight losing streak. Johny Hendricks missed weight for this fight, his third official time doing so and this one enters him into a unique place for fighters missing weight across two weight classes, but is coming off of a win in his middleweight debut when he defeated Hector Lombard. Hendricks is in a really bad spot here, he’s missed weight for three of his last four fights and had one called off for health issues back in 2015, if he loses he’ll be just 1-4 in his last five and even former champions have been cut for that kind of stretch, add in his weight issues and Hendricks needs this win. Hendricks is favored at -155 to +125 on Boetsch.

Middleweight Bout: Tim Boetsch (20-11, 186 lbs.) vs. Johny Hendricks (18-6, 188 lbs.)*

ROUND ONE: Boetsch is three inches taller and has five inches of reach on Hendricks. Hendricks fighting southpaw. They touch gloves and we’re underway. Boetsch circling early, feinting a bit and lands a body kick. Another front kick to the body from Boetsch then an inside leg kick. Hendricks lands a leg kick. Boetsch stabs another kick to the abdomen and lands an inside leg kick. Boetsch lands a body kick then an inside leg kick. Hendricks has a left mostly blocked. Boetsch with another body kick, then catches a kick and lands a right to the shoulder. Boetsch lands a right. Boetsch lands another front kick to the body. Hendricks lands a bit of a left in close. Boetsch with another front kick to the body. They trade lefts in close and Boetsch lands a leg kick then a body kick. Boetsch just misses a right, lands a body kick and fades a left. Hendricks lands a leg kick after missing a left. They clinch up briefly, neither man wants to really engage there and they break quickly. Boetsch lands a body kick then a straight right. Hendricks lands an inside leg kick. Boetsch lands a leg kick then a bit of a right. Boetsch really stabbing at the belly of Hendricks with front kicks. Boetsch lands a right to the body then one to the head in close. One more front kick to the body from Boetsch closes the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Boetsch

ROUND TWO: Boetsch circling again, lands a bit of a right then a solid body kick. Hendricks lands a leg kick after missing a left. Boetsch lands a head kick, Hendricks is rocked! Boetsch swarms him with rights and gets the finish.

Big win for Boetsch there, and he gets an interview. He says he was excited for this fight and had to step up to take on the former world champion. He notes that the left just missed a couple of times and he really didn’t want to get hit with it. He says he deviated from the plan in his last fight, he stuck to it this time and it worked out for him. He talks about setting up the high kick with body work earlier and then going high as soon as Hendricks was biting on it. Asked who he wants next, he says he’ll take whoever they send his way and he keeps getting better.

That was a serious head kick, Hendricks got lazy with his left hand in biting on the lower kicks of Boetsch and was wide open. From there it was the classic dirty boxing uppercuts from Boetsch to finish things off.

Michael Chiesa is on a three fight winning streak that has seen him move adjacent to the top five rankings at lightweight, his submission win over Beneil Dariush was impressive, but he hasn’t fought in a little over a year. While the title picture at lightweight is complicated by Conor McGregor being Conor McGregor, if Chiesa can maintain his top ranking here he’ll certainly be in the title discussion even if that title is of the interim variety. Kevin Lee has a stellar UFC record of 8-2 and is on a four fight winning streak, he’s on the verge of top ten status and if he can take out a near top five guy in Chiesa he’ll likely take over that spot near the top of the division and similarly enter himself into the title discussion. Lee’s activity has him a slight -140 favorite against +110 on Chiesa.

Lightweight Bout: #6 Michael Chiesa (14-2, 155 lbs.) vs. #11 Kevin Lee (15-2, 156 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Chiesa is four years older but Lee has the reach advantage of and inch and a half. Chiesa fighting southpaw. Lee lands a bit of a leg kick, both guys moving a lot early. Chiesa misses a high kick. Lee lands a straight right. Chiesa blocks a head kick, lands a straight left. Chiesa lands a left and trips Lee down. Chiesa on top, Lee scrambles, Chiesa grabs a guillotine position, Lee holding for a double leg and Chiesa lets go of the choke. Lee elevates and slams Chiesa landing in his guard. Chiesa after a triangle choke, Lee defending with one arm and Chiesa lands a few rights before Lee gets through the position. Chiesa controlling a wrist, tries for another triangle position but Lee stays tight then spins to the back as Chiesa scrambles to his feet. Lee has the backpack position, Lee drops to slam him but can’t dislodge him. Lee goes to a body triangle and is working to flatten Chiesa out. Lee lands a few punches, he tries for the choke but can’t get it. Lee lands some serious punches trying to open up the neck. Lee lands a 12-6 elbow to the back of the head, the ref basically ignores it. Chiesa is bleeding now, Chiesa stands and tries to roll but can’t get through. That elbow to the head opened up his crown. Lee after the choke again, he’s under the chin and Yamasaki thought Chiesa tapped but he clearly didn’t. Chiesa is livid and I can’t blame him.

He says he was doing whatever he wanted and it would have been four more rounds of that. He just did what the ref said and says he’s happy to rematch with Chiesa down the road if he wants. He still wants Khabib Nurmagomedov in Detroit, if Nurmagomedov is still ducking him he’s happy to rematch Chiesa.

Chiesa on the mic now. He says he was trying to gut through the choke and he wont say anything about the ref but he’s happy to see Lee in Detroit for the rematch. He gives love to his mother who’s cage side.

I can’t support that stoppage, bad call by the ref. However you might feel differently, so here’s the footage so you can judge for yourself.
