Dana White Is Ready to Reconsider Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre After UFC 214

Speaking at the UFC 214 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White revealed that due to UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley’s poor performance in the co-main event bout against Demian Maia, a prospective fight between Woodley and former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is no longer going to happen. Instead, White revealed the UFC will likely reconsider putting together a middleweight title bout between current champion Michael Bisping and Georges St-Pierre. That fight was originally announced earlier this year. However, UFC and Dana White called the fight off since St-Pierre’s time frame to return was taking longer than originally expected.

Earlier this week at the pre-fight press conference, White stated that GSP would face the winner of the UFC 214 welterweight title bout for the belt. He even told Woodley he would face GSP if he won at the event. Woodley ended up defeating Demian Maia by unanimous decision, but the fight received a horrible reception by fans. At the post-fight press conference, White also noted that the fight scored the record for least amount of strikes thrown in a UFC welterweight title bout. He was so displeased by the performance that despite saying the ship had sailed on Bisping vs. GSP, the fight between Woodley and Maia caused the ship to turn around and sail right back. White stated, “That ship turned around and sailed the fu** back,” on the potential revival of the Bisping vs. GSP fight.

Speaking on what could be next for Woodley as welterweight champion, White stated, “Right now, off the top of my head, I would say Robbie Lawler. He’s not getting the GSP fight, but obviously Robbie Lawler’s a great fight, too.” Woodley previously defeated Lawler to win the welterweight title at UFC 201 in July of 2016, winning by knockout in the first round. At UFC 214, Lawler defeated Donald Cerrone by unanimous decision.

Apparently, the current knee injury for UFC interim middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has worked in Bisping’s favor for UFC to reconsider booking his highly coveted match-up with GSP. The fight has not yet been officially re-booked, and White mentioned that GSP texted him during the post-fight press conference. You can check out 411mania’s full report of UFC 214 HERE.
