UFC 214 - Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier

During yesterday’s UFC Summer Season press conference, UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was asked again about a possible third fight with current reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Cormier stated, “It can always happen,” but he cautioned that it might not necessarily happen in the Octagon.

Cormier stated, “So, this is the thing about a fight with Jones and I. It can always happen. You know, it can happen whether it’s here, whether it’s in an Octagon. It may happen in the back when I’m leaving the building. It just always happens, you know.” He added, “So, neither him nor I ever shy away from the opportunity to punch each other in the face.”

Cormier didn’t completely shut the door on the possibility of fighting Jones for a third time. He added, “So when I’m done with Stipe, and Dana opens up the book and goes, ‘This is what you guys are gettin’ paid,’ then you guys may get a third fight. But ultimately, that’s what’s gonna determine it.”

That’s a far cry from his decree last year that he was definitely going to retire from MMA once he turned 40 last march. However, a third fight between the two men will still likely hinge on the results of their next fights, and anything can happen in a fight.

Next up, Daniel Cormier is scheduled to defend his heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 241 in August. The card will be held at the Honda center in Anaheim, California on August 18. The main card will be broadcast live on pay-per-view. Meanwhile, Jon Jones defends his title still to come tonight at UFC 239 against Thiago Santos.
