Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Maurice Smith Announced for UFC Hall of Fame This Year
During tonight’s UFC Fight Night 108, the UFC announced that Maurice Smith will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame this year. The former UFC heavyweight champion will be inducted later this July during International Fight Week.
Smith made his Octagon debut in July 1997, where he defeated former champion Mark Coleman to win the UFC heavyweight championship. He later defended the belt later that year in October, defeating Tank Abbott. Smith was also a championship kickboxer, with his kickboxing career spanning all the way back to 1980. His 1997 bout with Mark Coleman was declared the Fight of the Year by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter
